She did very well, better than some of my passengers did! Many years ago, my most regular pillion passenger was my mother and she was ace! She would jump on the back of my old Triumph 3TA, with a shopping bag under one arm and a mail order catalogue under the other arm and I would hardly know she was there. She would have been in her fifties at the time but sadly, she is no longer with us. Keep up the good mother/daughter work both of you.

Your daughter did well for a first timer. Don't know whether you did, but I used to put the side stand down before the pillon got off. Then if they stumbled getting off and grabbed you the bike would only fall over a small distance until the stand touched down. Saves two people and a bike lying on the tarmac.

We did try that, depended on the camber as with both of us on the side stand was hard to put up. 😂

Well done to you and the offspring! I remember the first time I took my daughter on the pillion. She was about 10. I felt so tense and wary until we both got used to it. I've taken many people on the back before and since, but your own children are quite different. It was the same taking my son on too. The least stressful was my 60 odd year old Mother in Law who's first pillion ride was around 40 miles and you didn't know she was there! Head butts still occur too sometimes. Goes with the territory, especially with beaky lids.

It's a great way to bond with your siblings, I used to go all over with my two daughters on my Goldwing, weekend camps and many Goldwing Club events but they eventually grew up, moved out and started to live their own lives. Moving on a few years I started going out with my Granddaughters on the back of my GS, only on day trips although the plan was to eventually go on a few tours with them. Unfortunately after over 50 years of relatively trouble free riding I eventually came across an old woman who despite me being visible to her for at least 300 yards she decided to wait until I was 30 foot from her and then pull out from a Garden Centre in front of me, I ended up with cracked ribs, a gashed eyebrow and a broken right arm/wrist. I'd slammed on as soon as I saw her wheels start to move and managed to lose a fair amount of speed but I now find myself thinking "what if I'd had my ten year old granddaughter on the back at the time" I had such plans for us but now I fear for their safety and not sure if I want to take any of them on the back again (when I eventually get myself right and the bike is repaired).

Great stuff, my eldest was 14 when I first took him out (pillion on 1200 Bandit!). It really shows you how smoothly you can ride when you have to (still lots of helmet bangs to figure out, especially braking). It also showed up the niggly vibrations that can appear at certain revs (particularly his right foot on the pillion peg - ended up zip-tying loads of compressed foam to it when we went camping in the Peak district the following summer). Your daughter seemed to enjoy it all - another future rider in the making? Congratulations, those are memories with mum she'll hopefully cherish forever.

Love it! Once she (and you) are more relaxed/comfortable and she's into the swing of it … take a nice ride out along the lanes and minimise your actions, you'll find her movements will be enough to do most of the "ride", her weight transfer, sighting, shifting, etc will steer, just concentrate of smoothness for your part. I normally find it gave the pillion a real kick to realise after the ride when I explained they were essentially doing most of the "riding" on that trip. Bit of fun either way for everyone to appreciate weighting and countersteering effects. Getting a simple comms system setup is fantastic to make it all more enjoyable/engaging for both also if it becomes a regular thing. BTW, bit of a unique but expensive viewpoint from the 360 ;)
@restdayrider Жыл бұрын
We went out again today, she is definitely more relaxed this time round. 😊

I disagree with your assessment of desirable pillion dynamics, the person holding the handlebars must command control of the machine and soft luggage. The good pillion is hardly noticed as they should not intrude on the equalibrium.
@stuarthughes1589 Жыл бұрын
Nice video again and great that your daughter enjoyed it to. A little tip to stop head bumping especially at junctions is when you get to just the last few mph 5 ish come off the front break and stop on the rear break the bike stays level and no head bump. You both make a good double act.😉
@stevezephyr Жыл бұрын
Brilliant, both you and your daughter did a fantastic job especially considering it was first time for the pair of you. My wife rode pillion for years until she sadly passed away and absolutely loved it. My son comes pillion these days and the simplest advice I can offer is use a buddy belt if your pillion prefers and for corners get your pillion to glance over your right shoulder for right hand bends and your left shoulder for lefthanders, that way they lean with you, not too much and not too little. My wife I never knew she was there, my lad is a big unit at 20st and he is an excellent pillion. Keep it up Charlie, shame about the camera, but I've lost two GoPro clones before now on the motorway 😂😂

Hi Charlie, I have 3 daughters and all 3 were on the back of my bike in a heart beat. Bought all their clothes off e bay except helmets, fortunately 1 size fitted all. Their mother wouldn’t go pillion. They started around 14 years, they are now late 20s. One goes to work on a 125 scoot and the middle one has her full licence. I am going to Tenerife in September on a bike tour with the latter one. When I used to occasionally show them how fast the bike was they used to squeal with delight. They are all petrol heads and it’s wonderful to have a bond like that. I hate being pillion myself😁

The best thing about a pillion getting on and off on the left side is you have the sidestand down in case your foot slipped on gravel or whatever. Think safety first, that's the way I have done things when carrying pillion . Nice to see daughter going out on bike with mum. Saw that with my wife with 2 of her daughters although, one of her daughters preferred being pillion on my bike as I went a bit faster. It's not always the boys that like speed. Great video, and great example of how to introduce someone to riding pillion - taking it easy, giving them signals to use if they want to stop, considering where they are in relation to traffic. Much better than my first (only) pillion experience with someone that wanted to show off, accelerating hard uphill etc, felt like I was going to be thrown off the back. How did Roger do with carrying the extra wait - did it have much impact on acceleration or handling?
