Agreed, amazing! I am slightly frustrated I can't do the same, not jealous, just frustrated. Not only you have to be seriously wealthy but, you also have to live in a country where you can have such a space and still live in or around a big city where you can work and earn enough money for that kind of project! You can forget about that in western Europe :(

I agree. And that is going to be a beautiful engine when they are done. And it's kind of funny because Jay's shop is putting German engineering to shame. Because they should have used brass instead of steel in the first place.
@jb428

+Chico Little What do you know about engineering 100 years ago? American smartass...
@FelixIsMyName
@FelixIsMyName 7 жыл бұрын
Chico Little Remember, it was not put together for longevity. It was built for racing and because of the rate of how cars were improving back then, it would have become obsolete within a year or two at best. Quite often racing/record attempt cars will be built with very fine tolerances and with whatever was the most cost effective material to use. I don't think it's about bad engineering, but that they would have never expected the car to still be around 100 years later. German engineering has always been a benchmark in industry since the turn of the last century. I think saying that Jay's garage and team are putting it all to shame is a little unfair and harsh. They have the luxury of hindsight as well as the 100 years of progress that has happened since the car was originally designed and put together.

@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 7 жыл бұрын
No. The typical process for repairing block cracks is to drill the crack and install tapered pins like a stack of dimes overlapping until the entire crack is "filled". Surprisingly, it's not "that" expensive to have done. It was about $100 an inch the last time I had one repaired (no idea if that's a linear scale of cost, but a 2" crack in a lifter valley was $200 when I had it done on a SBC block... this was in the late '90s though).

It's called 'pin welding', I'm surprised Jay never heard of it before.
@curbyweaver4606
@curbyweaver4606 7 жыл бұрын
***** Right. You can't weld either cast iron or aluminum without risking it warping. Cast iron often degrades to graphite over time due to heat, so welding is OUT! Pin-welding is indeed using tapered threaded pins, drilling each hole partially into the two on either side creating a continuous surface. This process is a refinement of that process, but fundamentally the same.

He always seems surprised that we like these blogs. Well, they are at least as interesting as the garage ones. A great supplement to the garage-concept. I learned about Evans and will be converting in short time.

Jay this has to be one of the best resto videos you've done. I have to back and find the 1913 fire engine as it looked amazing. The Lock and stitch was very cool, and the crack about going to the Proctologist to have dental work done had me spitting my coffee. I so miss you on the Tonight Show. Don’t even watch anymore. Guess i’m too old as it’s just stupid most of the time. Look forward to whatever you have coming next week.

Jeez I love Jay Leno, such an interesting dude! It's such a joy to watch a man talk about his passion. I didn't watch the Tonight Show much, but this show has me coming back every week!

What a wonderful workshop. This is a side of your life with the collection that deserves its own series. It's a complex and fascinating archeology of moving vehicles, in itself. Uniquely interesting. Because by doing it, you discover how these vehicles were made - and the many problems those ingenious people overcame in making them decades ago. I suspect this is almost the best part of the work today. You clearly love it.

Those cylinders on the Benz-Mercedes are familiar to anyone whose worked on radial aircraft engines like the Pratts or Wrights. They made then that way so they would eliminate the head gasket and have one less thing to worry about. There are early photos of cars like the Benz flying over the infamous bumps at Brooklands with the whole car airborne, something you didn't wasn't to do just before the turns.. Thanks for the updates Jay, and thanks for the video.
