Thats is an awesome bit of advice for Aussies who are trying to restore - but only finding overseas ppl using products we dont get here - coverting products has been very confusing. Thankyou SO MUCH!

This is the best video I’ve seen on KZbin for restoring the metal. I hope I can find the rust converter and primer here in the states. Thank you for sharing this.

I'm down the other side of Victoria, picked up a treadle base with flywheel for a 31-20 i'm cleaning up. I wasn't sure about the rust converter but picked up the same stuff and it completely transformed the existing paint. After I washed it down it was a bit grey and sunbaked, but it's come up a treat. Brillant tip. I've got to treat surfrace rust on the machine itself, mostly the flat surfaces. You reckon i can use the same product?

I have a much rustier base, with no paint remaining, so I’m going to use a wire brush to get back to just dusty rust, not flakes, and then try a rust converter, but I’m uncertain about what to do with jointed surfaces, I mean the bearings etc. I don’t want to convert rust to the black haematite finish over a nut which should come undone. The rust becomes haematite. I don’t want to chemically ‘weld’ it with converter! So what do you do with rusty moving parts if they are in a bad way? I’m thinking to use penetrating oil and clean them up, but I presume I don’t paint the inner surfaces or they won’t fit back together. Grease? Thanks for your opinion. And that’s a very pretty treadle you have there!
@SewWhatMaryborough800plus6 жыл бұрын
Bella. Any Mechanical rusty parts we do not put paint into. Prior to painting I would give it a good grease and then paint. The paint will not get into the joints due to the packed grease. then when the paint has dried carefully wipe the excess grease off which will remove any over paint. I hope this idea helps ?

After it turns black, do you need to wipe the paste off or does it just fully dry??
@SewWhatMaryborough800plus7 жыл бұрын
It will dry completely. It won't need wiping. Keeping in mind it's only an undercoat finish and not for outside or in wet area's . If you wnat it for outside you will need a matt or semi matt all weather coat over it.

I took apart a treadle sewing machine completely and am now trying to remember the steps in putting it all back together again - I have cleaned and restored the base, the wood and rebuilt some of the broken parts. NOW, wondering if anyone has a diagram on how to put it all back together again. HELP :-)
@SewWhatMaryborough800plus7 жыл бұрын
Peggy if you look at a few U tube clips I am sure you will get some idea. If its the actual machine you pulled apart. Sheesh not even we do that. I really can't advise much on that. When we dismantle a part of a machine we make sure we do it in a time slot where on the same day we break it down and Rebuild it while it is still fresh in our mind. As you remove something you place it in a line one part after the other. Good luck with that

All is well - I finally figured it out :-) I am so grateful for your instructions on how to restore the base - I'll attach a photo of the completed renovation as soon as I can. Thank you again.

Have you ever done this process on a brown treadle? The product I bought says it turns rust black but is clear on non-rusted places, which is a problem because the sides of my treadle are metal, not iron, and are painted brown. The treadle itself is iron but appears more brown than black, but it's not covered in rust, so it's not the rust making it brown. I was unable to find the product brand in your video. I bought Adcoat Industries' Rust Converter and Primer. I'm wondering if I should seek out another product that turns EVERYTHING black, rather than having the rusted areas black and the others showing brown paint coming through because I really don't want to spray paint the entire thing in black afterwards. Any suggestions and do you have a website or email I can send photos of my treadle to for review/advice? Thanks so much!

@SewWhatMaryborough800plus8 жыл бұрын
Laura, the pedal is held in by two blots on the right and left of the pedal. If those bolts are still there and the pedal is not broken you can screw them in to re secure the pedal. Good luck with that.

Thank you. I will check that out and let you know what I find. Good day to you

I have a question, please. The last shots with it outside, was it already dried and wiped down or it was still processing? How long does it take before you wipe it off? Thank you.
@SewWhatMaryborough800plus4 жыл бұрын
Sheila. Hi. With this the application is important if you paint it as thinly as possible and with no streaks or bubbles there will be no need to wipe it down. The different areas tend to dry at different times. So wait Until all is dry before applying a second coat. if you feel you should need it. Regards Wayne
