Great job! I just picked up a 98 Coleman fleetwood that needs some tlc on the roof. Going to go this route. About the only thing I will do different is use plumbers puddly or gasket material around the lights. Just my opinion that caulking will make it harder to get off if they need to be changed in the future. But hey! It works your way too. Thanks for uploading.

@@ddcatwoman25 Sounds like you're prepared! I use paintable caulk to fill punctures. I use my fingers to level it out. Let it cure before you paint over it. Sometimes the caulk shrinks and it needs another coat. But once its dry, paint right over it. Hope that answers the ding issue!

What you are thinking is dirt on the roof (approximately 1:30 into video) is actually the metal roof. The paint they put on these older roofs is very thin and tends to disappear over the years. I've worked on campers for a great many years and have seen this on all brands. Great idea with the rubberized covering. That should give you many, many years of use.

@sstressfl
@sstressfl 3 жыл бұрын
After 1 year it still looked like new. There were a couple camping trips where we parked under a tree with berries and it stained the roof. When I got home, I washed the camper like I normally do (with it closed) and then sprayed some clorox cleanup bleach on the stains. Used a light bristle brush on the area and then sprayed it off. Looked great. But that winter, while in storage, the camper was surrounded with snow and one of the kids climbed on top of it and the roof separated from the side panel. Just a small 1" gap. But it was enough for water to get in and ruin things. In the spring I was not willing to rebuild the entire roof so we traded it in on a new camper. I told the dealer what had happened and they took it anyway. BUT... I saw our old camper 4 months later on the dealers lot and it still looked like new. Hope that helps :)

How is your roof holding up almost a year later? We have a 2008 Starcraft and are about to paint our roof as well. Last summer when we were camping a gust of wind flipped our awning and made a small ding about the same size of yours ding in I saw in video. We slapped some duck tape on it immediately and had no problems with leaking the rest of the summer. We were considering filling our ding with caulking or epoxy and then painting the whole roof. Do you recommend the Henry Elastomeric paint and vinyl adhesive? If so we will follow you instruction to a T. Thanks for the video!

Rebekka Star Auerbach yes I do recommended it. The roof looks great and have had no problems. I have had to used a little spray bleach to clean tree-dropping stains off of it, but it continues to look like new.

The scotch pad won't reach into the deeper textured surfaces at all... use a stiff poly brush (for washing car tires) instead! Painting at night is a mistake. The floodlights draw in flying insects...
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 4 жыл бұрын
Derek Suddreth thanks man. I tested multiple cleaning devices. The scotch pad was perfect. The texture is not deep! The scotch pad also had the effect of prepping the surface like a mild sandpaper. Again, it is the right application for this specific roof type. I live in Vermont. The insects are present with and without the floodlights. They landed in the paint after the lights were turned off, whilst I slept. The only reason painting at night was a problem, which I addressed, was the increased moisture in the air that delayed drying. But when you have so little precious time, you do what you gotta do. Thanks for your thoughts my friend.

After we got it out to a campground, I parked it under a tree that dropped red berries on the roof and it made stains. When I got home I cleaned it with a little spray bleach (like cleaning stucco) and a light scrub brush. Then sprayed it off with a hose. It looked great. We used it for an entire summer. So liked how NEW it looked. During winter storage the kids climbed on top of it (the snow was so deep that they were able to walk right on to it) and the corner of the roof separated from the side wall... just enough to allow water inside and it smelled so strong of mold. The roof at that pointed needed a complete tear down and rebuild. I was so frustrated that I traded it in and bought a new one. But, the last time I saw old Phyllis at the dealership (4 months after trade in) the roof still looked like new :) Hope that helps!

Sorry to bug you. I was looking for the paint locally. Found a Henry acrylic elastomeric and a silicone based RV and trailer waterproof paint. Was wondering which you used and recommend. My thoughts acrylic is hard like a shell and therefore prone to cracking when raising or lowering roof.
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 5 жыл бұрын
PAGrunt Hi there! Good question! If you search google “silicone vs elastomeric” you’ll find silicone is not as good. It does not last as long. It will leak because it absorbs water. It’s flammable. It’s smells bad. Elastomeric is flexible. Lasts longer. Looks better longer. It will not absorb water. And is less expensive. You won’t regret it :)

The screw head is definitely unique on pop up campers. Usually the head is very small. Whenevver I bought generic screws the head was always too big/wide. Jay Shreve It will need repainting eventually. But from what I’ve read, I’ll be well into retirement, Lord willing, before it begins to fail.

Did you by chance rebuild the inside of the roof?

Erik Blazer a year before I made this video I replaced sections of wood on the back and part of one side... the wood had turned to mud from years of slow leaks. From what I could tell the leak was due to failed caulk. The roof wood was still solid.

Michelle Shaw I traded it last year on a new camper! It looked as good as new when i traded it. Clean as can be and not a hint of peeling. I went back to the dealer months later and stopped to visit her... she looked great. The stuff is sposed to be 10+ years.

It looked like new for a year after we used it camping but in the Spring I traded the old Popup in on a new popup. The roof surface was still great. I got berry stains on it once and it cleaned up like stucco. A mist of spray bleach followed by a light scrub brush and sprayed off with the garden hose and it looked good as new again. The coating works very well.

R R I actually did paint it the way I described, but there are times when you need to violate the rule to get complete coverage. But I agree, my video editing does not show the best illustration of proper crisscross painting 😊

what type of caulk do you recommend for the seams that I can get at home depot or Menards?

Jose Perez the caulk world is very specific. Some will work but might not last as long in camper roof situations. There are some really good discussions on popupportal.com about seam sealing!

I looked at some Google pics. I'm thinking disassemble, clean it, dry the area. Caulk, replace, use a new weather strip. I think this is the replacement insert. www.campingworld.com/heavy-duty-insert-trim-white-1-x-100-roll?CAWELAID=120030630000000449&gclid=CjwKCAjw3qDeBRBkEiwAsqeO7t7a-pagwPFKAZhy88C_QZpcJtJOp8m5_FLbfVW9g7W5uSdQr6KkuRoCdqkQAvD_BwE

I have a 98 Jayco with the center seam and a rooftop AC unit. The AC produces a lot of condensation, which pools on the roof. This caused us to develop a leak along that seam... so I started researching solutions. We ended up applying Eternabond tape along the entire seam. That was 4 years ago, and we've had zero issues. The stuff is like magic. We've had puddles sit on that roof for a week at a time with no leakage. So my advice would be to tape the entire seam with Eternabond and then paint over that. It will be a permanent solution, and you'll never need to caulk that seam again.

Sadly no video, but I snapped some pics! We removed the interior, painted all of the cabinets and wood surfaces. Put in new flooring. My wife made new covers (twice, the second time a diff color) for all of the seating areas, new curtains. Cleaned everything spotless. Cleaned and painted the frame with black brush on rust oleum paint. Painted the roof. I have a few pics I can share on the community tab if you'd like.

Hey Dan! Admittedly I have never really done any research on the Chamois... little did I know there is an animal called the Chamois. A species of goat-antelope in Europe. For many years imitation Chamois were made with pig skin (what I used for many years) or goat skin. Today many are made with sheep skin. I just bought a new one and it is made with sheep skin and its awesome :)
