I had one that someone gave to me w a blown motor in ‘93 . It was old then and I think I must have just threw it away . I don’t even think o could get parts for it then lol . So it’s amazing to see one almost 30 years later

WOW!! I bought one of these beautiful machines brand new from REDLANDS YAMAHA for $1,600.00 cash. The owner delivered it to the house for me and soon after that I was on the High School MX Team. We raced every Friday night against other IE high schools at CORONA RACEWAY and in 1982 our school placed 2nd to Hemet High School. Man oh man I wished I can find another one of these bikes. This was definitely a trip down memory lane. I used to run PROGAS Racing Fuel mixed with HPS PreMix.

Nice. That would have been cool to have a high school motorcross team.

Dec 1980, hoping for the new YZ125, xmas morning you run to the tree and there it is with a yellow bow.😎

Beautiful restoration! This was the first year for liquid cooling, and I think the only year where the coolant ran up the steering head to the radiator. I frequently had to replace the O-rings in the steering head. This was a beautiful bike -- awesome for a collector, but the 1980 was lighter and lower-maintenance.

Nice resto, I love these 70's/80's yamaha 2 strokes ... but that headlight shroud has been beaten with the ugly stick.
@triumphrider12 жыл бұрын
...but it's a number plate. YZ never had a headlight.
@stevemitchell95202 жыл бұрын
@@triumphrider1Thanks, that's what confused me, I've only ever seen the oval style front race number plates we used here not this type.

If i may inquire, where did you source your tank decals from? everything i'm gettting in is not to my liking....
@triumphrider16 жыл бұрын
I bought these many years ago from Reproductiondecal.com (now Diablocycle.com) when I was restoring a '75 DT400, but now it looks like they don't offer for the '81 YZ.

How much horsepower to the rear wheel does it have? I've heard it's 30hp? Is that right?
@triumphrider14 жыл бұрын
I can't say that way, never put it on the dyno. Best I could say is what someone may have shown in the internet.

awesome work....may I ask how much the bike sold for?

Quick question, what is your reason to run 16:1 premix? Just seems a little rich for my taste although your bike sounds and looks great!
@triumphrider16 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the compliments! The Yamaha service manual calls for a 16:1 mix, and that is what my dad (mostly) ran when he was racing these back then.

Very nice restore ... but the 81 was one of the worst 125s I ever raced

Everyone thinks that the radiator placement ruins the bike but no its perfectly fine in my opinion
