Join in with the Restored Crew as they attempt to bring some life back into this forgotten 1981 Delorean. After sitting abandoned for over 25 years, the guys jump into years of collected debris, mouse home, and rusty parts to see what it will take to see this classic run again. After digging in a little further, the team runs into some major obstacles that forced the Restored Crew to make some huge decisions on the future of this ol' movie car. Will the guys be able to bring some life back into this neglected piece of history, or has time gotten the best of her?

@@bobbydelamar606 I agree its been done.... but at the same time you can prolly do this swap much cheaper than another engine. I think it would be cool to see the new Zo6 engine in it or a turbo setup like the grand national has or the GM cyclone engine. What about a boosted porsch motor ?

@jhawk1985 👍🏻 Ooh, that would be different and powerful. I'd almost choose the newer LS first or even a Coyote. I hate to say a Honda K series because those are done too much also. Great engines, though.

Try being the first to fix the valley of death… weld the hole! Take a pressure washer to the bottom end to get that sludge out. It’s obviously going to need a new motor but it wouldn’t hurt to see if you could bring it back. Who knows y’all might get lucky. And that milkshake might be from that coolant leaking in from the hole and not head gaskets!

These engines and gearboxes were very popular to put in race cars when i used to break Renaults 25 years ago. Lots of after market bits to up the power, you will find a nice one if you want one. Or, these cars where supposed to have a v12 engine originally. I know a man in England who has built a v12 engine out of two straight 6 Kawasaki liquid cooled motorcycle engines. There is one in the Barber motorcycle museum. Would love to see a DMC12 with 12 actual cylinders.

Unless you want to go stock, your best move money wise is to go with an LS setup. There are kits to mount them available and use a Porsche transaxle. You get 3 to 4 times the horsepower with stock engines depending on which one you go with.
@houseofno
@houseofno 5 ай бұрын
Not as easy as it sounds. That's a transverse mounted rear engine and not much room behind the front seats. Hope you like doing lots and lots of welding and custom fabrication. Best move moneywise? I am laughing my head off at your gift for understatement. You have no idea.

@@houseofno been done many times. With the kit, using the LS, Porsche transaxle, it uses the DeLorean axles and is pretty much a drop in and no it's not transverse mounted like front wheel drive cars or the Fiero. So laugh your head off and do some research before spouting off.

Correct. There were over 1 million PRV V6 engines produced. The transmission on the DMC-12 was Renault. I had a Delorean from 2007 to 2010 and thankfully mine was in great shape. Ones that were painted back in the day were painted by dealers. (Some were painted later by owners if the the car was damaged in an accident) No Delorean ever came painted from the factory.

I was stationed up in anchorage Alaska from 2000-2008. The entire time I was there there was an intact delorean just sitting on wood block next to an abandoned restaurant. I checked recently because i was wondering and it’s still there to this day. The great thing about Alaska is that it has the same corrosion index as my home state of Arizona which is virtually nothing. Despite the cold there’s no rust or corrosion up there (that was part of my job in the Air Force and AK/AZ are the two best places to be if your job is fighting and repairing corrosion as a fabricator) they don’t salt the roads either. So even by the recent pictures I’ve seen of it it still looks almost in perfect shape.

Lance and Wyatt....in my opinion, the easiest and best direction is to LS that car. If you don’t think you have room then a twin turbo V-6 would fit right in. From the looks of that car, it is not going original through your shop. As always, budget will dictate what is done. If it was mine, I would not go original. I would go with a bored and stroked LS crate engine. If money is not an issue install both a supercharger and large twin turbos. All drive line and suspension would have to be upgraded. All new disc brakes. New rims with wide wheels to handle the power. Strip the paint to see if the aluminum is still good. If not then maybe a stainless steel looking wrap. Interior need full upgrade. You will be putting a lot of cash into this build unless you have sponsors to help cover most of the changes. Also, don’t forget the frame may require work. With the above, you have just fully built a new car. There are cheaper was to go but they will look cheap as well. You want to go cheap ? Put in a used junkyard engine. Recover interior panels yourself. Sand it down and give it a silver paint job. New tires on existing rims and you might have an acceptable driver. Have fun and stay safe.

I think what really makes this DeLorean interesting is that its exterior is painted. Everybody wants these to look like Back to The Future stainless. It would be cool to restore this one back to the red paint as it came from the dealership. As far as those bucket seats are concerned, even though the foam may appear intact it got baked like the rest of the interior and most assuredly is hard as rock and should all be replaced. And since the interior is already trashed it would be cool to re-do it in all black.

TR, the car is still viable but you should shy away from a stock engine. There are many great v6 powerplants that would fit the chassis (with modification) like the Toyota truck series, the Early Buick (non-blower) and the 70s Chevy v6s that have cams, oversize pistons etc. available. Great Video! If anyone could sort this out I'm betting on the dynamic duo at Turnin' Rust!

Since you found a brochure from Louisiana dated 1998, I checked to see if any hurricanes hit that state in 1998…..which could be the source of the water and mud in that block. Hurricane Georges hit Louisiana on September 20, 1998 doing $30.1 million in damage and was responsible for 3 deaths. Sustained winds hit 155 mph. Hope this helps. On the lug nut issue you might want to get a set of sockets designed for stripped nuts. I get a lot of wheels from u pull it salvage yards. Often the lug nuts or stripped or the chrome cover has come off. This makes getting the wheels off hard. I searched for a set of stripped nut removers. Some were 4 sockets that covered most lug nuts but lacked the sizes needed for the ones with the chrome cover broke off. I found a set that goes from 14 mm to 22 mm. These sockets have the inside of the socket shaped like the outside of easy outs. Sharp ridges that curve around the inside. You drive them on the bad nut then use an impact wrench or a breaker bar. For getting wheel in the salvage yards the battery impacts work well. Most u pull it yards have the cars up off the ground. Wheels tend to spin, hard to hold them and use a breaker bar.

Absolutely satisfying video. Grew up in such a DS. My father's "other" love. Having done the basics, the whole hydraulic system would be the next big puzzle there for you. Very much appreciated, from Greece

Given the Delorean’s poor reputation with that engine, and the other successes of the PRV engine, I’d like to see you find another variant of the same engine. The "easiest" & "cheapest" swap is to replace the DeLorean's 2.8 PRV with a later Eagle 3.0 PRV. The benefits of that engine are the fact it's got more power, it's EFI (NOT mechanical K-Jet), later models have distributorless ignition, it's even fire, and it's a relatively straightforward engine swap. Not quite plug & play, but as close to that as possible with the DeLorean. Obviously that car is too far gone to restore. Just make the best possible driver you can out of it.

I know a V8 swap seems hard because of space, but what about a 4.3L GM V6. Good strong solid motors. Can't wait to see what you do with the car and I know you'll do right by it, one way or another. Merry Christmas to you and the family. God bless.

@@jankro1 3800's are designed primarily for transverse applications. That's why they work well in Fiero's. This car is not a transverse design, so the 4.3L would be a better choice. You'd have a better chance of finding a Vortec 4.3 over a fourth-gen 3800. Now a smaller 4.8 LS would be a treat.

It's going to be a lot of work. This is the 3rd Delorean Revive I have seen. I will watch it to the end. But if you guys can restore this one- you are Delorean Hero's. I personally want to see. Hats off to you!

Number one thing that has to happen...strip that dealer red paint off, regrain the stainless and let her shine! Engine wise, DMC Houston has PRV's NOS in stock right now, but they are pricey, you could do a whole LS swap for cheaper than one of those engines and Mike has all the parts.

I'd for one, would like to see a fresh engine in it. That said, an engine swap might be cheaper. But that might lessen the overall value of this one. Of course, an engine swap may not be a bad idea, based on the design problems of this engine. No matter what, I really enjoyed this video and the one where you trailered it up and brought it home. You've got a lot of work ahead of you on this one. But what ever you decide, I'm in for the long haul. Awesome editing too by the way!

This is an excellent video, thank you so much for sharing it! How does that engine differ from the rest of the PRV V6's? I don't know how 'generic' it is! But seeking out a Peugeot 605, Renault 25, Safrane, or Espace in the US may be as productive as finding another DeLorean! However, the Volvo counterpart may be more easily come by! 🙂 Anyhow, I wish you very good luck in sorting this, and hopefully you'll be able to share some footage of you having fun on the roads with it! I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and all the very best for the New Year! 🙂

😢 Sad to see the old engine with low miles just really bad like that. With that said, NOWS the time to give it the engine it should have always had. I would either install a 4.3L V6 or just go all out with a old school V8. There has to be some kind of adapter plates so the transmission will still work. I know LS engines has been done before, but i have never seen a old school V6 or old school V8 done. Not sure if they had trans problems but if so it might be better to change that too.
