For future reference, trim around the windshield seal doesn’t have to be removed before taking the seal and glass out, it comes out with the seal and the glass. Prying the trim out while is still installed in the car is bad idea because is very easy to bend. You were lucky it didn’t bend too much. When reinstalling, the glass, seal and trim have to go together as one piece, otherwise, you won’t be able to install the trim. When dealing with glass in an older Mercedes, is crucial to follow the FSM.

It never ceases to amaze me why so many people are into German car worship as though they are miraculous mechanical marvels. They are basically the same as any other mechanical vehicle with nothing special about them except they are over-engineered and unnecessarily complicated. I am an Engineer and I spent 3 years in Germany working with their Engineers and while we got on well they are no better than me and some are not as good as me

One tool I just don't see used often enough on stuff like this, but works absolute miracles is called the "shake n break". it's dirt cheap, plugs into an air chisel, and gives you an INSANE amount of vibration that I've net to have fail on even the nastiest, most rusted screws. I'd almost guarantee that slot you cut in those nasty bolts would have been a breeze for that tool, I've done some far worse ones with it. It's all of like $30, too. Completely paid for itself the first two times I used it.

For the bottom trim, remove the caps at the end and slide them off/on. That’s much easier and the way they’re intended to go off and on. When getting rusted screws out, instead of wd40, use brake fluid and let it sit for some time. It penetrates better. Also when using wd40 or similar product, it’s supposed to sit to get the time to penetrate. Really great work guys!

You are lucky to have skilled tradesmen around you that can do things like replating. Here in the states, it is hard to find anyone doing restore work because we have a throw away culture. If you do find someone, they are only for rich people like a Jay Leno.
@lukesky14153 жыл бұрын
Hey, I don't know if you know this but I'll throw it out anyways: WD-40 is petroleum based and will ruin rubber parts over time, you want to be using a silicone based lubricant with these parts to preserve and "refresh" them. Thanks for the video, I can't wait to see the car all done!
@ThePippin893 жыл бұрын
Those bolts with the destroyed heads.... an easy way to get them out. Clean the rust off the top, place a nut on it and mig weld the nut to the bolt head from the inside (effectively a plug weld). Then a spanner on the nut will turn it out no problem.

14:35 For removing the bad bolts.... I don't know if this was doable here in this situation, but I would suggest welding a nut on top the bolt by filling the nut's hole completely in with weld. With that, you should have enough grip on the bolt and the added heat of the welding, should also help you to remove the bolt.
