About us:
We're Jack & Megan, and in late 2020 we sold our belongings and packed our lives into our 2005 Toyota Troop Carrier to travel Australia. Our original plan was to complete a full lap of Australia and return home to Perth to resume our 'normal' lives. We decided we wanted to document our lap for the future and began sharing weekly travel vlogs of our life on the road and fell in love vlogging, filmmaking and sharing our lives with you. We completed our first lap and couldn't imagine living any other way so we decided to continue travelling and calling the Troopy home. We have gone on some crazy adventures since then and it is all thanks to you tuning in to join us every week.

Hey guys we can't believe the negative comments in this video about your plans, we are absolutely riveted and find you guys inspiring, if we could we would sponsor the whole build. You guys are so refreshing to watch, keep being real, show it how it is as this makes more entertaining, you are both naturals at this. Nothing but respect from us, your positive smiles and attitudes towards your difficulties and challenges are some of the best parts.

While you are working on your roof, you should look at fitting a dust suppression system (such as the Dometic one) to keep the dust out when travelling on dirt roads.

Hi again, Jack made a comment about buying the bed area fan that the poor may pay twice. I am sorry to be the bearer of possible bad news, but my wife reminded me that If I was in your position, that i would rather know now than later. I have a heads up about caravan fans. They are not all equal in noise. Your fan appears to be like a caravan bathroom fan, i couldn'tsee the brand to check. If it is, they can be very noisy and are no good for ventilation in a bed area, especially at night. May I suggest that before you complete the roof that you temporarily connect a 12v battery to the fan and see if you're happy with the noise output. It would be easier to replace now rather than when you're out on the road again. I hope I'm wrong and your fan is a quiet brand 🤞

Well done so far guys, we non haters are proud of you and what you are achieving together. I'm a carpenter and have a little bit of experience with vans. Your budget will blow out a bit as I'm sure you are aware especially when you buy stuff not first included in the budget. If you have any carpenter/tradie friends don't be afraid to ask their opinion, put in plenty of thought and research before doing a job and you should be fine. When things start going pear shaped or not as wanted just walk away (as you did) and it will work out straight away the next day or a solution will come to you at 2am. Make sure you put some ply or timber between the aluminium and the ceiling to reduce the chance of condensation. Looking forward to the next episode.

Hey guys 👋 this video was awesome. Megan your editing is always so top notch. Just wanted to give a bit of advice from someone who is a sheet metal worker and has built many projects 😄 There is a reason why your roof trusses were made of timber. It was so that the moisture and condensation (cold air) transfer didn't go onto your ceiling on the inside and then drip down. Just a TIP to make sure this doesn't happen now. Make sure your ceiling is thick enough. If you use ply make sure it's minimum of 7mill thick or use the pine lining boards (tongue and groove) which are 10mill thick from Bunnings or even better, use a packer like the 19x42 dressed pine that you can get from Bunnings and you could attach them straight to the aluminium using countersunk Tek screws + insulation. Then attach your ceiling straight to the 19x42 pine. Hope this helps and I haven't confused you both 😂

Great work guys, really starting to get into it. Did you also seal the seams, the aluminium/science sheets, and the fan/ skylight from the inside as well? While you have no internal ceiling, it might save you some pain later. I am sure you have searched a thousand sites Jack, but just a thought from me. Enjoying watching this build at the same time as I am watching a guy rebuild a Can-Am Spyder in the USA. He has snow outside and you are in 40 degree heat. Such contrasts. Keep up the good work.

Coming along nicely! Yep working in the heat isn't fun but it's something I'm well used to! Grew up in Merredin and would help out on an old Harvester that was pulled along by a tractor in would be standing on the back clearing any sticks and crap that might go up into the bin as it was being pulled along getting covered in wheat chaff in the heat of summer!! Good fun but goddamn needed a cold shower at the end of the day! Just giving a shout out too if you need any advice or a hand with anything hit me up - I'm a Cabinetmaker by trade and an outdoors enthusiast doing my own custom little projects for camping 4wd etc on my weekends etc in happy to help out with anything you may want or need! I believe that sheet of tar & alumimium over the roof holes may be the same stuff on the outside of that UK council block fire a few years back that burned a bunch of people to death (because once it catches alight it's difficult to extinguish). I wouldn't be running electrical wires anywhere near it just in case. Too late!
@itsJackandMegan
@itsJackandMegan 7 ай бұрын
Hey mate, it’s a material used in almost every caravan build for walls ceilings and body. Aluminium composite. 👍
@realfamilyman
@realfamilyman 7 ай бұрын
@@itsJackandMegan Good, it might be a different product then. The stuff I referred to which easily burns and is difficult to extinguish is aluminium sheet (probably powder coated I guess) with a coating of tar on the other side. It conforms to seal uneven surfaces so it's also easy to deform (shows lots of ripples/marks the more you handle it). So it's a case of peel off a plastic sheet protecting the tar from being contaminated, then get it pressed down asap to have as little marks/dents as possible. Older caravans were just aluminium sheet with a stamped profile (no tar coating) and sometimes squares of white styrofoam for "insulationg" (useless really), whereas modern caravans/motorhomes are made of either chopped strand fibreglass sprayed into a mold with a spray gun, or, a hard closed cell sytrofoam glued between two sheets of fibreglass then pressed with a hydraulic machine until cured.

silicon probably works better if you PUSH the first run INTO the seam ... then if you want more safety coverage go over it but that first run is the most important bit as it then fills right in to the seam
@davidstephens1092
@davidstephens1092 7 ай бұрын
I have found the best results are to mask the area, make sure it is perfectly clean and then put a very small amount of polyurethane ( it can be painted ) on the seam and then rub it with a finger making sure that it has fully adhered to the base material. Then once you are sure, you can put a decent amount on. I use Heavy Duty Big Wipes to clean up and they work a treat. If you don't do this you have no way of knowing if it is just sitting on the surface.

Hey, I have installed the with the hinges facing forward for this very reason. If I turned them 180 the wind would catch them and pull the up…

Have you considered using more of the ACP ? It comes in various types and from 2mm thick onwards. Being pre painted and very rigid and lightweight is interesting. We like using it for various jobs.
