On the technical sheet it is the 371equivalent (370). The technical sheet is from ETA who make the movement. And since the case is made by breitling, they have made the caseback to accommodate a thicker battery for longer service intervals. This is my assumption. So the round well on the caseback is there to also accommodate a thicker long life battery (399 or 395)

As a former High School advanced electronics teacher, quartz movement time pieces were part of my lecture regarding piezo electricity and electromagnetism. Some of them can generate a frequency so high, it breaks one second into 30k parts and that is what makes them so accurate. The are truly a marvel of electrical engineering.
@GRAHAMAUS4 күн бұрын
The quartz crystal in most watches has a frequency of 32,768 Hz, which when divided by 2 15 times gives 1 second (2^15 - divide by 2 is a fairly simple circuit, so a chain of 15 of them is easily made). But as a quartz crystal that is a very low frequency - crystals can be made to pretty much any frequency up to around 100 MHz, possibly higher (in my days as an RF engineer many years ago the crystals we encountered didn't go much over 60 MHz, so I'm out of touch with the state of the art). Even so, in a lot of radio equipment 60 MHz is too low, so you end up having to use multipliers rather than dividers to get much higher frequencies. While my radio experience 'back in the day' topped out at under 500 MHz, it's astounding to me now that we have everyday electronic devices routinely communicating at frequencies 10x higher than that, not to mention computers running at many GHz. I guess my point is that 32.768 kHz seems very low to me!

Beautiful! I personally have nothing against quartz watches. I've worn many, and they're very practical. But I've been a mechanical tick-tock watch and clock lover since very early childhood. Some of the first things I would take apart trying to figure out out how they work were my grandpa's broken pocket watches. He'd break one, buy a new one and give me the broken one to play with because as a child I loved taking things apart to figure them out. Now 50 years later, the swinging pendulums and swaying balance wheels have a romantic place in my heart that nothing else can replace.

No, not necessarily Automatic watches are a pain, you have to adjust the time every month because even the world's most accurate mechanical watch is still +/- 3 - 10 seconds a day! And mechanical watches need servicing which is very expensive A quartz watch doesn't suffer from any of that garbage and is infinitely more accurate than a mechanical because quartz = modern digital technology and mechanical = ancient technology
@J.K.Barrik3 жыл бұрын
@@jurivlk5433 Who cares about all that, all a watch has to do is tell the time and a modern digital quartz technology watch does that extremely well compare to even the most expensive mechanical watches available because a top end quartz watch such a grand Seiko spring/direct drive is in a league of its own compared to the best mechanical watch available Metaphorically speaking, the internal combustion engine was a paradigm shift in human engineering advancement 120 odd years ago however, technology moves on, its called progress hence electric cars is the way ahead, petrol/diesel will be confined to history books soon and similarly, mechanical watches have also had their day with smart technology now incorporated in to EVERYTHING, digital is the way ahead

Excellent tutorial. Very professional and supreme skill. Crystal clear video and not too serious - entertaining as well. Many thanks. On the DIY front, I bought my wife a Jean Renet Carlton watch with an ETA movement in 1982 and have always replaced the battery myself. Recently, I found that when I replaced the back the movement stopped. I then remembered that for the last few years I'd been using the incorrect battery, a 392 instead of a 329. As you were explaining, same diameter but different thickness. Also the 392 a slightly higher capacity and therefore lasted a little longer!! Anyhow, always used the same little red plastic sealing ring with a tiny amount of silicon and over the years, with constant compression by the watch back it must have become a little thinner, sufficient for the case back to short out on the battery*. Just a little less pressure on the back and it was fine but did I have a proper seal? Well, changed back to a 329 and everything fine again after 40 years of battery replacement. *Thought I should update this because Nekkid is absolutely right!! Nothing to do with the battery 'shorting out' that's quite ridiculous. It is the movement pressing against the crystal and stopping the second hand!! There aren't many advantages with snap-on watch backs but if this had been a screw in I could have done immense damage; rather like Nekkid's Aerospace. Also, when I looked closely at the battery clamp, it is actually embossed with the battery dimensions, 7.9mm diameter and 3.1mm height!! AKA Renata 329!! Good old ETA and thanks to Nekkid again for pointing me in the right direction. Forgot to mention, you had the movement looking so immaculate the Aerospace should have a crystal back LoL. Thank you once again.

One of my favorite watches I have ever owned was from a company I don't think exists anymore. It was named Riviera, and it was the first watch I ever owned that wasnt a cheap 2 dollar watch. It had a square, gold dial and was mainly silver, with small gold accents on the watch band. It just kept ticking, and was always right on time. It kept going for almost 6 years without needing a battery. When I changed it, it kept stopping, and I was worried that because I couldnt find the company that made it anymore, I wouldnt be able to get it fixed. A few years passed, and i thought I had lost it. when I finally found and opened it up, i learned that it had a JP-01 quartz movement, one of the super cheap, easy to replace movements they make. That old friend is still in my collection as the watch that started my love for watches.

when i was a child, i change myself the Casio Databank battery, the only time i send the watch to watch shop they put the rear case in bad position a miniature spring pops and shortcircuit , now ia have a dead Classic watch, on that time i explode on kid fury!!! i cant believe it, they are specialists.. but they do a damage, and not accept to repair it.. i never trust again , i do myself on all my watches.

Yes I have owned numerous quartz watches and even have many now. I just never seem to wear any of them. Some are beautiful but never seem to make me smile. My favorites are all of the prequartz Era. Yes I am watching this amazing video again and hopefully I will start wearing some of the quartz again.

Fun to see a quartz being serviced!

I wear quartz most days simply because I don’t wish to expose a 10 or 20+ grand timepiece to the rigors of things I do which at one moment might be changing engine oil, then an hour later, using a chain saw to knock-off part of a dying tree. Later I might be fishing on the ocean or lying prone on some huge rock to shoot a high power rifle at some distant target. None of these are activities in which a sane individual wears an expensive timepiece. When all I did was sit in an office or conference room each day, or travel from one city to the next for yet another dog and pony show type business meeting, wearing a high quality timepiece was sensible. Now I wear them only on those occasions when I’m socializing, or doing something for which business attire is worn. it’s better this way.

I own a 1st gen Emergency. In 2015 it was a $600 charge T swap both batteries so I did the next 2 myself. I don’t touch the ELT battery, but I do replace with the specified battery which looks to be the same one for this model. Thanks for sharing!

Love the videos thank you. Particularly interesting to see this one where there's virtually none of those elements that watch companies use to lever the price up. If i were to guess at the price points throughout the journey of the watch id say. Cost to manufacture $40, sell to dealer price $1,200, cost to customer $2,000.

Maybe, in terms of manufacturing cost, but just look at the complexity. This watch has great functions. It would have taken tremendous skill to achieve.

What a transformation to the finished product. You made it look like new or gently-used compared to the condition in which it was received. Impressive.

I’ve no issue with quartz watches, but there’s nothing like the thrill of knowing that you’re wearing tiny hand made machine on your wrist, and that if you put it in a draw and forget about it for 20 years you can pick it up, give it a little shake or a wind and it will start working again
@cookingprof3 жыл бұрын
I'm not a fan of quartz. OK.. Mechanical watches can be brought back to their original glory. You just can't shake and wind! Oils ;(Yes there are many), that are in a mechanical watch degrade over time and they are not the liquid that they were when the watch was built/ last serviced. They are STILL subject to corrosion of the mechanism. A cleaning and an oil change is important. IMHO . This is even MORE important on watches that are, :Auto or Self winding". Watches that have: complications, need additional care after your stared 20 years.

Well once you get it serviced, by a watchmaker that has the offical parts, who probably had to sign their life away to the watch manufacturer, for a price that is a significant fraction of the original purchase price of the watch.

Got one of these watches as an 18th birthday gift from my father. It is one of my prized and most cherished possessions. Quartz movement or not I love it and will be passing it on to my children.
