I picked one of these up off the curb a few months ago. Believe it or not it was about twice as dusty as yours was. It was fun to clean! The hard drive was dead, but a new drive got it running again. It's been running Folding@home and is also used for media in my workshop. Great video!

To be fair, the i3 is running at 3.2GHz across 4 threads. The 550 powering the iMac in this video also draws about 72w, so I'd hope it can play Minecraft well 😂

there’s another “cost effective” way to bypass that drive temperature sensor, you can use the dvd temp sensor since it’s the same connector as the drive temp sensor. they used to be like $6US, but that was before the pandemic so prices might be much different, but you don’t need a software bypass with this method
@psivewri
@psivewri 3 жыл бұрын
I wasn't aware of that, might have to give it a shot :) Thanks for the advice!

You can also short out the connector. That’s what I did when I installed an ssd in my late 2009 27” iMac and it worked without any overheating issues
@EugWanker
@EugWanker 3 жыл бұрын
@@jacobmarzynski7719 Shorting out the connector means you get no temp reading at all. Not that many people care, but if you do want to have a temp reading, it's only about AUS$10 for the optical temp cable and they are commonly available. Even during the pandemic, I paid only CAD$10 online for the cable for my 2010 27" i7 iMac, and it arrived the next day.
@EugWanker
@EugWanker 3 жыл бұрын
@@psivewri Yeah, many are not aware, even some Mac refurbishers. A local shop sells used iMacs, so I asked them to an SSD swap for my 2010 27" iMac. They said I'd have to use a fan control app to control fan speed. Other shops would do it with the OWC cable, but that is $$. So I decided to do the swap myself with the CAD$10 optical drive temp cable. Works great, with proper temp readings.

I remember those iMacs pretty well, since my secondary school used to have a bunch of those in particular along with the older ice white iMacs for the music suite so it's pretty cool to see one being restored by you. In my first year, our music suite got raided once or twice by thieves trying to steal the new iMacs which was pretty insane but to be honest this was like 10 years ago now.

Oh man, this video triggered serious PTSD from the times I've had to disassemble and replace parts in my Early 2008 24" iMac, which is still my main computer. The list is extensive. In over 12 years I have upgraded the RAM from 2GB to 4GB to 6GB, replaced the HDD three times before switching over to an SSD, replaced the LCD panel, swapped the logic board, upgraded the CPU from 2.8GHz to 3.06GHz, and replaced the graphics card a whopping FOUR TIMES. There's not much left that's original. And every few years I open it up to clean out any dust in the heatsinks and fans. The things you do to keep computers running! I seriously need a brand new Mac but I simply can't afford one.

I might get one of these to play mainly Sims 2 and 3 because my baseline iMac G5 from 2004 struggles extremely with Sims 2 and my MacBook Air early 2020 is too new for these games and I don‘t want to buy them another time. But it‘s great to see that you can upgrade them because that makes searching for one pretty easy(I can just buy a baseline 2010 or 2011 iMac and upgrade it because where I live the higher up versions are pretty rare and still expensive)

with the hard drive temp sensor on these old imacs you can just short the cable to bypass the "feature" that makes the proprietary cable seem necessary and makes the fan spin as normal instead of it spinning at full speed less of a ramble: if you want to avoid software hacks for the hard drive fan to not spin at full speed constantly, simply short the connection of the cables for the hard drive temperature sensor

I'm mostly a Windows user (by habit and because of work), but one of my fiance's coworker put a 2011 i5 27" iMac for sale at €150 (they usually cost 3 to 4 times that in France in good condition). He already had it upgraded to 22 Gb Ram (odd amount but I guess he threw what he had in hand and it works fine, so if it works, don't fix it), and a 480 Gb SSD. My fiance bought a 2014.5 MacBook Pro, new from the shop and it still feels as new as the day we bought it 7 years ago. I kind of have the same feeling with the iMac. I slapped a 2i2 Scarlett Focusrite to play my guitar and bass through GarageBand and now I no longer use my amps. It's more than powerful enough to run my daily needs as well (basic stuff : web browsing, document editing, powerpoints, videos etc...). I feel that I could easily edit some videos with it as well, export times might not be the best, but seriously, if you've made it that far into my comment, here's the conclusion : the old iMacs look nice in your office and they can be serious good deals in terms of performance.
