I just spent 15 minutes watching a guy sand a knife. And I enjoyed it! Lol! I bought one of those knives a few years ago. Mine has a stag antler handle. They are great knives. Funny looking but very effective and comfortable to use. I don't store my knives in their leather sheaths because the chemicals in the leather discolor some steels and they make brass turn green. After hunting season I'll seperate the knife from the sheath, or wrap the knife in one layer of wax paper and put it back into the sheath if it fits.

Excellent restoration. I have an old Grohmann belt knife that I found in the woods in 1983 and it still looks great. One of my favorite knives. Not a super steel, but you can sharpen it with a rock and strop it with your belt. Wicked.

Got a few Canadian belt knife patterns in my collection, they look awkward but sure are good tools, they do a bit of everything. that's a gorgeous knife, hope the owner is super happy with it.

Truly amazing restoration by a super Canadian on a real piece of Canadian history - from the channel that could be called "the Canadian Belt Knife Channel!" I'm huge fan of Grohmanns and have a number of different Canadian belt knives. I hope to own such a great piece some day.

What a treat to see you work this very special blade. I am 75 now and purchased the exact same knife from a Penticton, BC hardware/outdoor store in the mid to late 60s in preparation for a solo hunt. It also has the “1958” stamp. I knew nothing about knives and thought this was a strange looking piece. But I have since realized I have a taste for the unusual and this item just had an aura of being something special. It is simply an enormously practical and comfortable knife for hunting purposes. It is my main knife for all things hunting and outdoorsy. Aside from dressing big game with it, I have used it as a kitchen knife, wood chopper (batonning), and so many other uses I can’t recall them all. I believe that when the knife first came out, it won some kind of design award. Although my knife is in much better shape than the one you are working on, and although I do have a point on the end of the blade now, I seem to recall that in its new condition it had a slightly squared off “point”. I somehow gathered that it was to minimize the danger of poking an animal’s entrails whilst dressing/gutting the beast. (Perhaps I am wrong on that count, but why would I have such a strong memory of such?) Keep up the good work! I look forward to your efforts much.

Green oxidisation on the brass or white metal pins is from the tannin in the leather sheath used to cure it. Really nice restoration Kyle and sympathetically done.

Hey Kyle, you never showed the finished product after you reshaped and sharpened the blade! Oh well, your work is always top notch… I’d just love to see a picture of the completed product. By the way, what is the best finish for handles? Did you add anything after you buffed it out, (I’m a woodworker and am always seeking out the best finishes for my projects).

I love my vintage RCN issued belt knife that I enhareted from my grandfather it's a beautiful knife and in almost perfect condition with almost no flaws or damage and still looks like new after all those years of use definitely a classic

I’m not early as good as you but I can get extremely sharp edges for sure on my whetstones. You never got my shipment but in my order I left you a note requesting a strop with my custom. Hopefully it shows up. Cheers Kyle

I understand why people love Whetstone sharpening but a belt sander is so fast and simple. With the right belts you can get hair whittling straight off the belt.

I believe they started making these in 1957 and patented in 1958. This is a nice example of an early model, but I don't think it's pre-production.

Not seeing the function of that blade..besides some light kitchen duty for perhaps vegetables..strange as it has a hunting style sheath for outdoor use..must be a Canadian thing..each group of people have their own unpractical ceremonial token blade design..not really into decorative wall hangers myself but each their own..

It’s a Canadian belt knife typical style, for small game and fish basically. It works wonderfully since it has a magnificent belly and very comfortable handle to use. It was also issue to the Canadian army if I’m not mistaken, it’s very functional besides what you are thinking about it. Especially the handle, inspired many modern production knives with off center handle.

Lets be honest here..the geometry of that off center handle design looks like a mistake at best..For camping or hunting, fishing etc that would be my last choice on earth to carry..each country has their own in country designs I get it..but that really takes the cake..a $9 mora blade would be light years better..off center, handle blade designs belong in the kitchen..
