This barn roof was built alongside the original farmhouse in 1732, which makes it 288 years old. Over the years it's had its clay tiles replaced with cement boards, and a leaking corner has rotted away some of the oak frame. It was time for it to be returned to its former glory. This is Part 1 of a 6 Part series documenting the restoration. If you want to follow along, please subscribe!

Carl, this was an brilliant video that I just got recommended by chance, I love to see some proper hard work. Some great techniques were used here, my favourite was the wood depth stops on the saw bar and then sliding the saw to nibble away to your line using the original as a template. Really looking forward to rest of the series.

Nice work Gents! Great joinery skills there! Having used both leather and metal hammer holders, I found that I preferred the metal one rivetted to a leather backing as it allows for a cleaner draw of the hammer, especially when you need it fast like when elevated and working at setting beams and timbers. Leather hammer holders tend to sag over time and can bind when drawing the hammer free. I sure like your ideas though on the tool belt kit! Keep up the fine work!

You know what you are doing, great job so far! Especially the drawpegging. Hopefully you wont have serious issues when the new green work dries out. Very interesting shot @ 4:54. They used a version of the English tying joint, but (as you would expect from les gallois, more elaborate and complex). Does the same job though-ties a post, plate and tie beam together to prevent the structure splaying outwards. At somestage along its history there was an upper floor, possibly an upstairs granary? You can see the joist sockets in the wall. My Dad repaired a low pitch roof just like this in the Charente about 25 years ago. He put 2 layers of boards (poplar or chestnut? not sure?) then the roman style half round clay tiles, bottom layer facing up, top layer facing down in the grooves. It looked fantastic. He died 18 moths ago
