Kyle, I saw this about 4 years ago. I have an old Iver Johnson that had seen better days and you gave me the desire to give it a good cleaning and a bit of resto. The gun turned out so well that sometimes I take it out of it's sock and just admire the beauty and craftsmanship of the people who built it over 100 years ago. It still looks and shoots great. Thanks for your inspiration.

Nicely done, two suggestions, 1-gloves, and 2- save all the scrapings and sanding dust and mix with the wood glue when you glue up the cracks, I have done that on a couple stocks and it is very good at blending and preventing a stain shadow line. But again well done giving an old shotgun a new life.

An old tip is using broken pieces of window or plate glass as a scraper. Tape it on one side for safety reasons and throw it away when it's dull. Great video!

Just found one of these in my grandma's house. She says it was her father's. It's in better condition than this one was, but it certainly needs some TLC. I'm glad to find this video, as it makes the task feel much less daunting

Love the video Kyle. I just restored/refinished my Dad's old H&R break open single shot and his old Winchester single shot .22 rifle. Both served him well in feeding his family of wife, and 8 children back in the day. Took many squirrels and rabbits home and to the skillet. I cherish those old firearms and though retired to wall pieces, both in a pinch could still come in handy. Nothing better than saving a piece of history. FYI, some brake cleaners have oil in them. Best to read the labels to get the ones that don't. God Bless !!

Speaking from the experience of a retired US Army soldier I can tell you that canned carborater cleaner is a primary resource for firearms cleaning, at least in the units I've served. My Beretta 9mm was field stripped, cleaned with the carborater cleaner and wire brush, NEVER oiled or lubricated in any way, reassembled and ready for use after every 15 day patrol. Very nice restoration on the shotgun.

Kind Thanks! I fixed up a 1901 H&R 12 gauge, very similar to yours. Indeed, they are a very nice good feeling shot gun. I used shellac for the walnut stock, a number of coats then steel wool and paste wax. Hard to beat those old aged walnut sticks for color and patina! Great vid! Many Blessings and Happy Holidays! Old Plastic gift cards or even old credit cards are good for making little disposable tools for cleaning and getting glue way down in cracks!! They are great for cleaning groves like on semi auto slides. They will get a drop of oil or glue just where you want it too. Great for mixing a little epoxy or any two part mixture. Use a 1/4 of a card or so as a spatula, and another card as a mixing platter. They cut into anything you want with a pair scissors. Hook tools, aline small springs anything you can imagine. Within reason. Cheep and easy.

if you don't have gloves, you can always stick some wood dowels in the ends of the barrel to make handles. Also good to run the steel wool through a cleaner, like alcohol, to get rid of any oils or etc. Still nice job, turned out great.

Looks good, I've done several of these in similar condition and a wet towel with a clothes iron would bring most of the dents out of the wood. I like to use Acetone for degreasing the parts to be blued.

One warning. Never ever do any gun bluing with the springs anywhere near. I learned this the hard way. Reblued a gun and tried to avoid the springs but either the debluer I used or the blue solution leaked onto the springs and EVERY single spring on the gun broke in half within 24 hours.

I've got to give that a dubble thumb Kyle, it went from next to trash can to a keeper. Old single shots are some of my favorites. If you want a darker blue in the future. BIRCHWOOD CASEY has a ultra blue it comes out deep black. A short brass drift is a requirement for the gun owners tool box my friend !!!!!! ( No steel on steel ) EEEEEK DONT DO THAT HA HA AWESOME JOB !!! Glad it worked out for you. I've been stuck with a few real winners ( JUNK ) GREAT VIDEO !!!!

Looks good, a wooden dowel inside the barrel is a good way to not touch it after cleaning. I use either Acetone or Alcohol to remove oil from the steel. A heat gun moved back and forth will evaporate any residue from cleaning and the steel will more readily accept the bluing. Just don't get crazy with it and make it too hot, just what works for me.

A strong suggest about putting your weapon on wire wheel. Try a very stiff fibre wheel. Removes almost every imperfection yet is less likely to "burn" or scar the finish or patina.

Over here on PEI I pick up 3-4 of these type of deals every time I visit my gunsmith. I've got like 5 break barrel singles in 12g. I did plan on restoring most of them but there they sit. I did end up getting one in great working order. Sometimes my aspirations get the best of me That looks great tho. You've got more motivation than me haha! Also, I really haven't had good luck with Outers brand gun blue. Birchwood Casey is what I've been using lately, it's a bit less streaky
