Hi Gary, I was a bit surprised to see you planning (?) to fit those built-up strut assemblies to the 3-Series instead of repeating what you did on the first side. Presumably you already bought the individual components as a set for both sides and these will now be surplus if you fit the £175 trade assemblies to both sides ? I appreciate you liking to show what sensible alternatives are out there and want to help viewers save time and money (and risk!), and they may have been supplied to you on preferential terms, but obviously your style is generally to do things yourself with quality components. I’m sure all will be revealed in a future episode !
@classic.obsession5 ай бұрын
Hi John be more specific and explain what you mean.
@johnmoruzzi72365 ай бұрын
@@classic.obsession Sure… you rebuilt the first side (twice !) with new spring, shock and top mount, so presumably you bought enough components to do both sides the same ? Now you have found a pair of built-up assemblies and are APPARENTLY going to fit one of these to the second side that you have stripped down. Therefore you will have mismatched front suspension on the car UNLESS you remove the rebuilt unit from the first side and swap in the second built-up unit, OR you will rebuild the second side with the same separate components to match the first side, and you will fit NONE of the new built-up units and you only showed them to present an easy alternative. That’s how it looks to me anyway…. Cheers John
@classic.obsession5 ай бұрын
Hi John. No I built it exactly as shown. Built up drivers side myself then used the new completed side for the nearside. Did tracking and droplinks,. I already fitted new top and bottom wishbones in an earlier episode. Measured wheel to arch both sides and exactly the same to the millimetre. Already done a coupla thousand miles since and the car drives and handles like new..I’m happy. I know some people or purists will cry I should done exactly the same both sides but I don’t agree. My prerogative. But, yes. I did different bot sides to give viewers an option if they were faced with the same dilemma. Appreciate your comments. Regards.

The reason why bmw and psa springs brokes so catastrofically is the design fault that can be easily seen when Gary holds the new set in hand. Lower spring perch is smaller in diameter than the main spring outer diameter. So where is the the spring most usually breaks? Well, the the spot where spring diameter shrinks. That section is the where spring is most abused when there is weight on. Why the perch is so small then ? Because wheel has to be wide for some reason, main reason is the scrub radius. When scrub radius is wanted to be low as possible, lower ball joint needs to basically be out as possible. So the strut comes very close to the tire etc etc.

I have it at the dealer and they are telling me both master cylinders are leaking and they want to charge 2 grand per to change the seals on them (not even get a new one). Is this reasonable? I have also never seen a car with two master cylinders is this true for the corniche?
@classic.obsession5 ай бұрын
Hi. I don’t think your car has a master cylinder. Early models like my 75 had one but they may be talking about the distribution valves as there are 2. These are designed to leak a little so I’m a little confused as to what they mean. Inside the ‘rat trap’ is always a bit wet with brake fluid as a lot of the equipment inside there is machine fit without seals. Just the way they’re designed. Regards

@@classic.obsession it’s at the dealership now so I hope they know what they are doing. They called them brake pumps does this change anything? Is the regular springbreak (pun intended) of these Beemers a design flaw? I‘ve owned 9 Audi‘s over the years, ranging from the 80‘s to models from the mid 2000‘s. Drove several of them to over 300000km or more (record: 2001 A8 to half a million km‘s) and I never ever had a spring break. Ever. Dampers I replaced when they started to get wonky, but they never died on me, replacement out of precaution due to age en km driven. I don‘t recall BMW‘s be this poorly built.
@klwthe3rd5 ай бұрын
BMW are that poorly built. In the US, they made tons of components out of plastic that should clearly be metal such as coolant pipes deep within the engine, water pump propeller blades and interiors that turn to caulk after a half a dozen years. Total junk.
