Restoring Antique Monkey Wrench - Tool restoration

I bought this rusty antique monkey wrench with a few euros for restoration. The old tool does not have any markings on it. It had a lot of rust on it and the jaws were not moving properly. The back of the wrench had been used as a hammer so I filed out all the badly bent edges and the surfaces of the jaws.
I did not change the handle as it seemed to be in a decent condition and not rotten. It only had one small crack. The end of the handle wouldn't have come off because it didn't have a nut like most similar wrenches so I couldn't just have made a new one with leathe in few minutes.

All of the little dinks in the metal work really tells the story of what this wrench has gone through over the years. And it can continue to be put to use.

@OddTinkering

@drstrangefart
@drstrangefart 5 жыл бұрын
When I restore wrenches with that style handle I grind the pein off the end of the threads to unscrew the nut holding the handle in place. When you clean up the handle you can shave like 1/8 inch off the length to have new thread to pein back over after you reassemble. Those wrenches almost always restore beautifully with few complications.

DIYCoolStuff Your method looked similar to a “foot detox” scam a lady worked on my wife using salt and an electric device in a tub of water to remove “toxins” during a foot soak. All it actually did was produce rust. I pointed it out and I was very unpopular. Good job saving an old tool.
@ynns1

Looks bent, is it really or is it my impression? Also it looks like the shaft and the head are separate pieces, like a hammer head and it's handle, which is quite unusual.
@OddTinkering
@OddTinkering 5 жыл бұрын
There is a slight bend in the shaft. The camera probably distorts it a little too because the lens is quite wide. The construction of the whole tool seems very usual. The bend doesn't seem to affect the usability of it as the lower jaw is not a perfect fit and it will adjust when the jaws are tightened.

Hey look buddy, I'm an engineer. That means I solve problems, not problems like "What is beauty?" Because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy. I solve practical problems, for instance: how am I going to stop some mean mother Hubbard from tearing me a structurally superfluous be-hind? The answer, use a gun, and if that don't work... Use more gun. Take for instance this heavy caliber tripod mounted lil' old number designed by me, built by me, and you best hope... Not pointed at you.
