Finally a video that shows what the deck is made of on a whaler. Now I feel more confident in tearing out my floor on my Outrage 18 and to stop this problem I’ll be adding honeycomb board glassed in stringers and also using honeycomb for decking, putting and end to soft spots and water logged foam. Still thinking about using 2 part foam for flotation, but not 100% sure if I’ll put it back in.

Hey no problem glad the videos can be helpful! I was terrified when I ripped the deck up but once you do it its not that bad its just getting the foam out is a nightmare lol, also sounds like a plan and I would say maybe put in the 2 part for flotation just to be safe but let me know what you end up doing with your build good luck. Thanks for watching!

Looks like you have layers of paint from a previous restore. In order to gelcoat you need to sand down to virgin glass or gelcoat. Use 60 then 80. Might have a pro spray the gelcoat , because messing up that would set the project back weeks

Hey thanks for the advice! I did do a lot more sanding and used acetone to get more of the bottom paint off and it worked. I also did a crap ton of sanding and got to a point where it wasn't making a huge difference but it wasn't down to the bare fiberglass idk how much stronger of a grit I could've used lol and started doing the gelcoat. Is that fine do you know? Also thanks for watching!

@@oneofakindoutdoors as long as its down to virgin gelcoat your safe. If you want a smooth gloss finish with little sanding add duracoat to the getcoat paint and spray it. Looks good

I do these all the time as a side hustle. Look up trex bedliner. 100% waterproof.get the tintable and do any color. Seals every crack and crevice.

I have the raptor liner for my whaler. Just waiting on better weather here in Florida to spray it. From what I hear it has amazing reviews. I’m just tired of repainting my interior every few years and the raptor liner will cover any improfections in the floor

Just a heads up !!! Do not use aircraft paint stripper !!!!!!! I made that mistake and it eats through fiberglass.. you may not be able to see it from far away , but if you look close enough you will see delanination .. I had several spots and I refreshed doing it .. just but some good 40-60 grit sandpaper and knock off the big stuff then go to 320 or 220

Yo thank you so much for this advice I was actually going to use paint stripper today but instead I sanded. Saved me a lot of time so thank you, glad you were able to fix your project though that's good. Thanks for watching!

Here is a tip Get the Pumps for the Resin it makes it so much easier to get the mixture correct.. It hardened up quick because u added to much Hardener to the resin ... I did a whaler Restore on my channel .. I hope the fiber glass sticks well to the side of the hull .. from what I was taught U should if took it right down to Glass and not glassed over the Gelcoat I hope it doesn't peel off later on ... another thing is IM not sure if you check behind that crack and dent to make sure there was not trapped water or wet foam ... the wet foam will cause the soft stops later on and will separate from the Fiber glass also good practice to cut the damage section out and repair any foam that is needed and apply the glass to dry foam ... other then that its looking Great man !!! IM not knocking on your work just wanted to give u some pointers brotha ... you got a SUB from me too I will continue watching the rest of the builds

I definitely will next time around, it’ll make for a lot more accurate ratio and I won’t waste as much resin.

I just got a 13 whaler for 150 bucs. I'm planning on making my own jet tender with a jet ski 600. Also you should look up the honeycomb sheets instead of plywood. My dad built his commercial boat with it. It's amazing stuff. 1 layer of glass on each side and a 3/4 sheet is half the weight of plywood and will never gain water. The only thing is you would need to glass some wood or aluminum stringers on it just for something to bolt the console to. The sheets are plastics and don't hold screws very well. I'm planning on using that. I'm also not sure if I'm gonna put the foam back in the boat. I'm thinking about making a sump and some under deck compartments or maybe a small fish hold. I'm definitely not looking forward to the demo after watching your vids. 😂 Good job though.

wow a whaler for only $150 is an insane steal congrats, sounds like it'll be a great project. Also I will for sure thanks for the tip still deciding how to do the floor. That would be really cool to have some under the deck compartments but maybe add the foam around them just to be safe. Yea the demo absolutely sucked but its all going to be worth it good luck and thanks for watching!

Next time you do this expose the foam and let the water dry. The remove the foam with a spade shovel. The whole thing can be done in an hour.

Where is the next step? I am thinking about buying a Boston Whaler just like yours (1964) and it needs the same work. You are giving me the confidence to go after it. Thanks
@oneofakindoutdoors
@oneofakindoutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
I would say go ahead and buy it for the right price because their will be a lot of cost to fix the boat and a lot of stuff you don't account for . Restoring one of these whalers has been some of the most fun I've ever had and you also learn a lot. Thanks for watching!

Sorry, but most everything you say and do is wrong. Boston whalers don't even have plywood decks. The peeling from moisture has to be paint; gel coat won't peel off fiberglass in flexible sheets... Someone botched all that work. These boats don't have stringers, the top and bottom fiberglass skins are bonded with the foam before the skins cure. You can't effectively bond fiberglass to old gel coat! You have to grind a 12:1 bevel to repair that hole through the hull, then build up the layers of increasingly larger glass mat. Please don't propagate misinformation. You make a decent video though.

Hey Thanks for watching, I don't mean to spread misinformation and I do mention I am a beginner and unexperienced in a lot of the videos thru the series and say this is not a how to. I know now that I haven't done everything how it is supposed to be done but I have done the best that I can thru the whole project and will do the better things on the next project boat.

@@oneofakindoutdoors Live and learn bro. We grow everyday if we keep it in mind. I mean no disrespect, but you and your viewers need to learn the right way, not a random experiment. I love your enthusiasm. Please do a little more homework before you hold class for others! haha. I'm a DIY'er myself, NOT an expert. I can give you a little tip, not a "Pro-Tip" , but if you keep your epoxy cup in an ice bath, you can keep it from kicking off in the hot FL temps. Peace and success!
