I think you are right about the color fading on older machines. My ss16 sat in a dark garage for 40years until I bought it from the guy who cleaned the estate for the widow. I would say the paint on mine is noticeably lighter then others that have turned more brownish-yellow with age. Mine is very low hours and was only used for pulling a yard trailer. The man who bought it new died of a heart attack in the late 70's. The only real problem I had was the carb and fuel system being in very poor condition as it held fuel those 40 years.

Good work so far! Eager to see it all done. Decarboning the heads on that Onan can do a lot to increase the compression.

I've seen alot of GT's, 16's and everything but the '76 ss/twin 18's. Dad got it at an auction, he passed on and I got it from him. It had fuel pump issues that was a pain for a min but while cleaning under the hood, wondering if it's worth it, I just happened to see a rusty little spring hidden among the walnut shells under the intake. The seller must have removed the pump plate and lost it so I put it in there and she fired! Purred like a kitten. So glad and amazed that it may have been why it was parked for years and sold at auction. Bought a belt, kicked the tires, blew the shit out of the tank and started mowing. I was just becoming mesmerized watchin the grass fly out the chute and about 10 min goes by and it starts sputtering and dies. I have tried to figure out the carb but cateracts stopped me. Just got one eye fixed and the other on july 31st, So I'm hoping to tackle this soon. I cleaned the carb and tried to poke thru the jets and holes and air bleeds. Put it back and it ran for about 5 min and sputtered again. Doin that wont run unless choked and dies faster under power. So until my other eye gets fixed I been kickin around cleaning it up, sanding the rust a little bit and definately thinkin of a different paint scheme. I was sure I'd be matching up some butterscotch or baby shit mustard brown. Caterpillar yellow ... ?? I guess... it definately lacks pizzazz in the paint job. I'm cleaning the tank again, the carb and will check the float and needle. I hope it's easy. It is a nice machine. I'd like to locate some of the more unique addons but dont expect any luck. 45- 50 yr. old lawn machinery?? 🤔 Well done on your efforts.

Not sure how far you like driving but look up almost heaven tractor graveyard. I plan on a trip this spring myself. Only 2 hour here though..

I hope the silver paint marker comes out in part 2 for those frame bolts brother! Oh shit, sorry Hugh I just had to say that, Iol I don't think I can ever forget that restoration tip. But anyways that thing looks amazing my friend! The favorite part of the restoration for me is the maiden burn! Can' wait to see yours. 2 thumbs up man!

Hello I need a little help on my ss18. I am cleaning the carburetor and noticed to get the whole carb of of the tractor I have to take the manifold of with it to get to the bottom bolts. Also if I take that off can I reuse the manifold gaskets or no? Or do I have to make or get new ones?

You should replace any gaskets you expose after even one previous season. IMO
