I did a similar project on 2 corn knives that belonged to my great-grandpa. I soaked them in Evapo-Rust to remove the rust. The blades are much thinner spined than this machete so I was not able to grind out the pitting. My solution was to cold blue them then I made new handles for them out of some really nice quartersawn sycamore. Just for grins I cut the necks and bases off .223 cases and used them for lanyard tubes. I had to drill new holes for that the steel was so hard I had to buy carbide drill bits. Maybe someday they will make it to my great-grandson.

I really enjoy seeing the end results of some of the restoration videos, however watching the dramatics is very painful. It’s not just your videos, there are a lot that makes it look like they have trouble with a wire brush or any of the tools they use.

Just a tip: you got a lathe and planned on replacing the wooden part of the handle anyways. You just could've found a way to clamp the handle in the lathe then to clean up the metal part. It's a bit easier than filing it clean ;)

You blade restoring people sure waste time and a lot of energy hand sanding. U can do 90% on a belt sander and use a vibrating hand sander after that. Then polish basically by hand. After all the idea is just to remove metal and rust pits. Your finished restore here looks very very awesome.

I really love watching these restoration vids. One thing I really don't understand is, why do they show us a project 3 or 4 times ? Do these folks think that we don't get it after the first look ?

Awesome. Only thing I would have done different is make the handle oblong instead of round. Gives more control. That's just me though. I prefer a more square or oblong shape handle.

Wooden handle would take the impact shock from your hand when chopping. And make it oval so it doesn't turn in the hand. A shape like a parang. Safer & more control.

Stunning job, did you leave the handle round instead of going oblong because it was easier to put the metal sheath back on, for functional reasons or did it just not cross your mind? This is not a criticism, just a question, its a fantastic job, I couldnt do either of them :)
