Chris, I enjoyed the spider love. Much respect. Better yet, Your grandfather "in his mind" gave all his knowledge to you. The pan changed his life. I am sure it even help supported his/your family. Now it is yours to help support your family. Yes pets are family too.

EXACTLY, I love my batea and mini batea pans, bit you need deeper water and they steel not plastic, in saying that my next go to is my 10" minelab or pocket gold claws, if i have some water, out comes the 6 inch sluice, more water or ground to work, brings out the 8 or 12 inch sluice, its what you can process vs what you can carry in is what detemines what i take for the day even tho most the gear is in car each time, its what comes out on the creek that day

Your stick as you call it has an old fashioned begining and a bit of history as well........I still have in my possession from my own grandad what he called a "sounding bar" It is a little larger than yours as it is about 2 and a half meters long and is basically a long 10mm wide piece of steel rod that is tapered to a point at one end. It was used to find gravel beds and bedrock around creeks and areas where you had water as it requires water to really work the way it was inteneded. By simply putting the rod into the area you want to explore and moving it up and down, you actually move the rod down through the layers, the real art is listening and also feeling what the rod is going through, heavy gravels make a harsher noise and vibrate differently, they also have a bit more resistence, where as light gravels are easier to penetrate and have a different sound and feel again, and of course bedrock gives you a resounding thump and your rod stops with a loud twang, and usually means you should check the end to make sure it has not blunted it too much! Clay can also be explored in a similar manner, as can most areas where there is water sufficient enough to allow lubrication...... Just thought you may be interested in the sounding bars historical signifigance as I recall my pop who was an avid miner in the East gippland area saying most serious prospectors all had a sounding bar!

A great probe rod, use solid three eights smooth rod (steel) and weld (ninety degrees) to 12 inch (long)3 quarter inch thick rod . Put a sharp 45 degree angle on end of rod. Quarter inch rod bends too much, half inch rod is hard to push, 3 eights rod and three quarters rod for handle was my best overall probe rod, ( good for finding septic tanks(corners)

I suggest you try phosphoric acid to remove the rust from the pan. It works well. Let it dry and once you wash off all the residue it reacts with the steel and leaves a black, protective layer on the bare metal.

I had to give up prospecting years ago, it was murder on my already buggered back trying to pan off at the end of a day dredging and for the same reason I ended up giving up even testing areas for it, that bending over panning was just agony to me but, I've still got my old steel pan, just like your grandfathers and though I did try those fancy plastic ones, I'll stick to my steel one. I even got to know the guy who made them as he developed an interest in prospecting and used to come out and try doing it. They're spun on a lath type machine and he used a brass rod to form them out and that's exactly the same pans as your grandfathers one there. Mine would be about 35 to 40 years old now and sitting in my shed for most of that but, I always preferred using it to those plastic things. BTW, while some did, I could never manage to earn a decent living out of it. I was dredging and no matter how long of a day I put in, I always hit a point where no matter how much extra dredging time I put in, it never seemed to increase the amount of gold. That all strongly suggests to me that the sluice wasn't holding the gold nearly as well as I'd hoped. That was a 5 inch dredge using an 8 hp engine & air compressor for breathing in the Sofala area. And as a side note, I won the panning competition at the local show by panning off a massive pile of rubbish in a metal pan the same in just over 50 seconds. I saw the gold added, all punched out solid blobs the same which I knew would sink quickly so really ripped into it and had it down to all of them and only a tiny bit of black sand in less than a minute. Panning off my concentrates from the dredge at the end of a day, I'd spend probably more than 7 to 10 minute per panfull of that and the fine gold.

I always love the advice you give us, even if it highlights your “mistakes.” However, I think that that’s just a part of prospecting. You learn more and more the more you do it, and that is what’ll eventually get you the gold. What a great lesson learned and I look forward to your vids every week. I don’t yet have a capable vehicle to access the gold near me so I live vicariously through your videos. P.s. I gave my dogs huuuuge scratches all over for you this morning 🥰
