That looks wonderful. The fireplace has been done just at the right time , i raised the whole surround up to get my inset to fit. The widths are standard but the heights vary .i just have a big grouted joint between hearth and surround. Yours is easier as you can hide it with hearth tiling. Gable is winter proof. Its not going to blow over and maim anyone. Which I know was always at the back of ur mind. Have a great week. me and him
@fishfoodieАй бұрын
My stove is on a marble base, so if anything falls out, it isn't going to fall on the floor, but in this case a strip of marble maybe an inch thick across the front would raise up the entire surround, & not look odd, & then the stove itself would be lower behind, & you don't need to cut anything ?
@lizcunningham291Ай бұрын
Definitely raise the surround, please don't cut it, it's too beautiful, fair play though guys, most wouldn't tackle that amount of work
@kimrafferty7170Ай бұрын
What a fantastic idea to just raise the fire surround so it can all fit in, the base of the wooden surround is damaged so it might be possible fir Ben to add some decorative molding to the base to raise the height and when it's stained it will just look like it's always been like that. This idea is so good and I think Dawn and Ben will have a huge smile on their faces when they see this ❤
@thecornerhouseprojectАй бұрын
Thanks Mitch, yeah it’s going to be lovely and toasty in here this winter. Ooh hearth tiling! I like that idea. We might actually get away without having to lift it or cut the flappy bit which is fantastic. We have the flappy bit a little open and a fan behind it and it seems to work really well. 24 degrees in the room last night. Admittedly it isn’t too cold out at the moment so when winter really sets in that will be the tester for it. Aww yes the gable! Sooo pleased I can now not worry about it collapsing on to someone! You and him have a great rest of the week! Xx

So happy you've decided to keep the original fireplace surround! I didn't realize it was wood, thought it was terrazzo stone. Love the wood, I would use a clear coat of stain over the wood, it will make the corbels stand out nicely. Love how the vent hood came out, it looks pretty as it is, love the silver color! Dawn the wall is beautiful, you've done a magnificent job!! On to the next video!! 🥰

To be fair it was Dawn's idea to try for an inset stove, but I am so pleased we opted for it. The restored fire surround looks lovely. Still quite a bit if detail sanding to do, extending and fixing to the wall, but we are so pleased with the results so far. As ever, thank you :-)

What I love about the "flappy bit/plate" and the triangular "sandy thing" is that I know what you are talking about! The entire wall and gable look wonderful and so does the fireplace! What a great job you have both done.
@thecornerhouseprojectАй бұрын
Can’t beat a layman’s terms conversation! Ben and his sister have this thing called “tell me like I’m in Bob’s Garage” Ben works in IT and he can get a bit technical here and there and when it gets too much and his sister can’t follow she says “look, explain it to me like I’m in Bob’s Garage” eg…just a normal run of the mill old fashioned garage rather than the flash computer run auto mechanics!
@tangofoxtrot4603Ай бұрын
Great to see the fireplace coming together, a mini stove fan (powered by the stove heat) behind the metal plate, would throw out the heat and might save having to cut it, the metal plate was used as a flu to get the fire going previously.
@thecornerhouseprojectАй бұрын
A dual mini fan is currently spinning away behind the flappy bit. I had a large one on it before the plate went back on but after reading the comments, yours included, we think this may be the most simple, straight forward solution. Cutting it soon became not an option as it is just too nice. Thank you so much for your comments and suggestion :-)

Hi Ben and Dawn. I think the "flappy" bit is called the "hood". I'm so pleased you have paused the plan to cut the bottom off. If you do decide it needs reducing in height, perhaps an ironmonger could do that from the top, preserving the curvy bottom. The wall is awesome! Brilliant work and, as always, thank you for sharing.

You are most welcome Judith and thank you for following us and for being a valued channel member, it means a lot :-) The flappy bit lol, it seems to be quite a popular term looking in the comments haha. A hood and a baffle, I don't mind which. No, no cutting will happen. When I first started it was a brown rusty lump without detail or definition. After several hours of rust remover and the wire brush spinner cutting it would be wrong with how it has turned out. Raising it is an option and a really popular solution, so watch this space. The wall is certainly going to stand the test of time, a roof next year :-) Thank you so much Judith :-)

Dawn is a very happy bunny Neuton and quite rightly so. I think there was more repair work than anything else on that wall and the sad thing is that you never get to actually see any repairs once the pointing and whitewash is done, just a flat wall which isn't going to fall down. Oh Dawn 😊 if anyone deserves a spa weekend with champagne on demand it's you. That wall has certainly tested your patience but look what you did? You saved a building ❤ The Ivy, the elements and the tree all tried to bring it down but you have brought it back and it looks amazing 👏 Great job on the fireplace but I would be tempted just to take the plate off when the stove is lit and put a stove top fan on it to stop the heat being trapped and put the flappie thing back when the fire is off, it's very beautiful, well done Sean 👍

@myworld8266Ай бұрын
My preference would be to take an inch off the bottom edge of the wooden surround and lift the metal fire place up an inch - to keep the detail on the flap, the lift to the metal component would be hidden by any fire place tiles you use on the fire surround floor area. Its looking great and well done on the gable end of the stone wall of the outhouse.

Such a relief to have it done though. As soon as spring comes round again and the weather is mild enough, I’ll fix up the inside of the gable and then get that collapsing wall down and rebuilt…oh and the doorway part rebuilt lol and then…..a roof on! If you have a room above that wood-burner, you could let the rising heat escape into that room - that's what we've done at home, and you heat two rooms at once! You'd need to block the chimney above the first floor room, to prevent the heat from escaping (fill flue with terracotta balls/fire-retardent insulation etc) and the heat comes out into the room above. All the best!
@thecornerhouseprojectАй бұрын
Oh my goodness yes we have noticed the room above is at least 3 or 4 degrees warmer now than it was before. It’s great and the house “feels” so different now we have heat on both of sides of the house. It’s bloody glorious! ♥️

Hi Josefina It was a really good week, one of the weeks when we feel we have actually got something done. The wall is "finished" for now and the other side of the house now has heat, and lots of it. Although we lit the open fire in the first month, it didn't last long due to the smoke coming out in the bedroom. Since then it has either just had the dehumidifiers running and in later days a gas heater (causing moisture). Now it is a lovely dry, hot heat to start drying the walls out as we did the kitchen end. Have a lovely week ahead and thank you so much for being one of our channel members :-)

You should be proud Dawn, the gable looks awesome and the fireplace is beautiful Ben, complete transformation, so pleased you decided to keep it and the canopy, I think that's what it's called, came up a treat. ❤
@thecornerhouseprojectАй бұрын
Thanks Pat. Yes very proud of it, it’s looking better and better as it dries a bit more as well! So much looking forward to seeing it without the scaffolding. So pleased we’ve got the fireplace back in the house, Ben has done an amazing job at getting that all fixed up and the stove in! Soo much detail was masked by the rust and paint, it’s a beautiful looking fire surround.

Thank you for sharing the work you have both done. Dawn the wall is amazing and it will stand for another 200 years. Ben the fire place is beautiful you have bought it back to life wow, love and blessings to you both as aways from Scotland xx

Hi Babs, we don't know about you today but we have the stove lit in the living room pumping out the heat. It isn't a cold day as such, just damp. The living room will be so warm later on tonight :) The wall looks lovely and most importantly, now safe. It should last a good few years now shouldn't it :-) Have a lovely week Babs and thank you so much for being here and being a channel member :-)

Omg guys - what great work this week, the gable wall is a fantastic achievement - Dawn you are a trouper. And Ben the fireplace is looking so good already. I’ve no doubt it will be beautiful when fully restored. And I applaud your decision to wait on cutting the hood. It is stunning as it is so should only warrant cutting if you are losing too much heat.
@thecornerhouseprojectАй бұрын
Hi Maeve Yes, we decided the cutting won't happen at all, it didn't take long to decide that to be honest and with the huge number of suggestions that this video received in comments, there isn't a need to cut it, just use a solution we are happy with. Hopefully I can make it all look nice. Dawn's wall is lovely. No chance of the top stones falling off now and damaging someone or one of the animals and it a huge step closer to a roof going on next year. It will be a huge useable space, a first for us actually being able to use it properly. Thank you for always watching and commenting each week. Have a nice week :-)

You have both done a great job, Dawn your patience and passion on the barn wall is tireless I’m glad it’s nearly over and although you still have lots of work left in order to complete it at least that end will be done. Have a good week and look forward to seeing the progress next week ❤
@thecornerhouseprojectАй бұрын
Ahh yes I’m glad it’s done for now as well. I am looking forward to continuing with it next year though so we can finally get the roof put on to it.

Everything looks absolutely amazing! Dawn, the wall is beautiful and your dedication to the job has really paid off. It looks like a professional stonemason with lots of years experience has completed this job! The final "peak" stone looks like it will take the ridge pole and be the start of the roof trusses. By this time next year, you'll have a building with a proper roof and dry space in the outbuilding. Well done! Ben, love the fireplace from the surround to the "new" mantle and it will be the perfect place to hang the Christmas stockings! So, so glad that you kept the "plate" and didn't cut the bottom off as it would have been a real shame to lose that beautiful work! Sounds like it will be okay and function without having to change it in any way. Loved seeing these jobs from start to finish today. Thanks for taking us along. Have a good week and see you next Sunday.

Hi Cristy, thanks for your comments, it means a lot to have you with us and also having you as a channel member. Yes, we think you are right with the final stone, although it seems to be concrete more than stone so it may have been poured when the metal roof went on. Fingers crossed by the summer months a roof will be on it and a workshop, storage 100% dry space will be there for us :-) Yes, we don't plan on cutting the flappy bit, it would be too much of a shame, we will work around it. Have a lovely week and thank you again :-)

WOW you two are so dedicated to the corner house and returning it back to its original condition. Last week Dawn was disappointed that she hadn't finished the wall but look at the wall now, not only is it rebuilt but it is stronger than it ever has been because the care Dawn has taken at rebuilding the wall is the same as if she was building a house wall not just an outbuilding wall, amazing. The work Ben has put in in restoring the victorian fire surround which now looks stunning and what a lovely surprise for Dawn when she got in after building the wall to seeing the fire look so beautiful. I can't wait to see what you two have planned for the winter inside the house but whatever it is I will enjoy every minute of watching you both reveal how beautiful your home will be. I hope you both have a wonderful week and thank you for sharing the doggy and kitty playtime it was so sweet to watch. Love as always to you both and kitty cats 😺🐱😺xxxx

Hi Kim, as always thank you for watching us, commenting and for being a channel member (also, I haven't forgotten to email you back, which I will do now) The wall is lovely, it looks solid again and safe to walk under. Hopefully by summer it will have a roof on and we will finally get the workshop and storage we tried so hard to make. We are so pleased with the fire, fireplace and wooden surround, even in it's unfinished state it looks so nice and so many people have made suggestions on how not to cut the flappy bit. We won't be cutting it as I said at the end of the video, we will sort a solution. Rex stood today at the house barking and Dawn was able to go out and straight to him and give him a stroke, maybe finally we are winning with him. Allan does love him. Have a lovely week Kim and take care :-)

Really enjoy watching both of you getting on with it. Your home eventually will be fantastic. Dawn has done a really good job pointing that wall in and working around removing that Ivy root. Looks really professional. Can’t wait to see how the fire surround turns out Ben. Looking really good. The fireplace is the heart of the room. I am sure it’s going to look amazing ❤🇬🇧

The stonewall and the fireplace really look nice. Well done. For the fireplace, would it be possible to add stone at the base to raise the wooden mantel and the Victorian surround just enough so that you can push the “flap” back above the stove. Cheers from SW Florida.

Thank you so much for your suggestion Elizabeth on how we can keep the flappy thing intact and not cut it. Cutting it won't happen after so many suggestions on how we can get around this. Great video guys. Dawn, you are well on your way to becoming a master mason. Keep up the good work. And Ben, I think that "flappy bit" is the technical term. It goes along with "fiddly bit", "extra bit" and "loose bit".
@thecornerhouseprojectАй бұрын
Hahahaha!!! Yes exactly all of those bits!

The wall! The wall! You've finished the wall! 🥳🥳🥳 It looks wonderful. And stove/fireplace/inset look beautiful, too (that surround is just magnificent).

Thank you Evelyn. It is "finished" for now, until next year, and no doubt I will find Dawn somewhere in that area just have a little look lol. We are really pleased with how the fire and surrounds have turned out in the living room. I have a lot of work to do on it before it is finished but it is the priority to get done. Then I will move on the to the stove for Lukas' bedroom Dawn mentioned as this wasn't shown. Have a lovely week and thank you :-) 💖

Hi, thank you for watching and commenting :-) Dawn is really pleased with it all, she has done an incredible job with it. She is so wanting a roof on it, she wouldn't stop if winter wasn't coming. Really pleased with how the fire and surrounds turned out and hopefully the end result with be nice. I will do my best. Thank you again :-)
@SerendipitySharonАй бұрын
Ben I am so impressed how gracefully you can still bend down on your knees! Dawn, felt your angst at thinking you were done with the wall only to have that last piece of ivy loosen some stones. The cast iron fireplace looks so incredible, perhaps just a steel plate underneath that curly plate to reflect a bit more heat. Really great editing and music was perfect to set the relaxing watch!
@thecornerhouseprojectАй бұрын
Hi Sharon My knees weren't impressed with having the stone to lift too lol. Yes, I don't know if I am lucky still being able to use my knees to lift like I do, but I won't complain. Well as promised, Dawn went out yesterday and finished off those five stones and it is looking really good now and all of the ivy finally gone. So other than some beating back with the brush and knowing Dawn a little bit of something here and there, the building can wait until Spring. Hopefully we will get a roof on it before summer, we will see. We had loads of suggestions for the flappy bit, all of which will work and we like, one involves a bit more work that others and I like easy, your option being one of the easy ones, so thank you. Thanks for the compliment with the editing. We hope you have a lovely week ahead and thank you so much for always being here and being one of our channel members :-)

Hello, I'm so glad you got the wall done as much as you can coming winter. As you said you love doing it but maybe a break is in need. I love watching you videos. You are both doing such a great job! Take Care
@thecornerhouseprojectАй бұрын
Hi Marliyn, thank you for watching and commenting :-) Yes, getting it "finished" before winter was a must. With only Ivy, which was starting to dry out and snap, holding those top stones up, we are much happier knowing the stones won't be falling down. I am trying to get Dawn to have a rest and although she says she will...... I am not so sure she will. Thank you very much again. Have a nice week :-)

I know you probably know this, but after you treat it to keep the wood worm from coming back, you can use a wood hardener on the softer bits of wood.
@thecornerhouseprojectАй бұрын
Hi Mary, thanks for commenting. I filmed a big section showing the wood worm damage on the timber and explained what steps I am taking on treatment, hardener and then filler as needed but had waffled on for far too long so it never got included in the video. As you never saw it,, thank you so much for your advice on how we can preserve the timber better, it means a lot to us that people are happy to share :-) Thank you again and have a nice week :-)

Dawn what an achievement. You are truly an inspiration for all women with what you have achieved on that gable end. Well done you 👏. Ben I really love that you have restored the fire surround and the metal plate.I hope you dont have to cut along the bottom as the scalloped edge along with the detail is really beautiful.Well done on the restoration of the fireplace surround and the really nice little stove that looks as if it was always there .Now you have a really cosy home. God bless and take care you both xx

Hi Colette, thank you for always joining us and commenting :-) Dawn is my very own wonder woman lol. She said to me that she wanted to fix the outbuilding on her own as a personal challenge which is why I have had very little input, only helping the odd time here and there, and this was only due to her being short lol. We have had soooo many comments with suggestions on how we can avoid cutting the plate, something we soon realised would be a terrible thing to do once I had it back to bare metal and all of the beautiful detail on show. The little inset stove is wonderful, in no time at all the room is warm and we are looking forward to a lovely warm winter in that room. Last winter was in the kitchen with the range as it was our only real source of cheap, decent heat. Have a lovely week and thank you again 🌹

Hi Ed, how are you doing? Thanks as always for joining us. Hopefully I can do a good job on the extending the top and sides of the wooden surround and when stained it will look nice. We are certainly very happy with it so far. Going out on a limb..... hopefully late Spring we will have a roof on the outbuilding. Maybe then, we will have a workshop lol. Thank you again :-)
