It is my honest opinion that the late 90s and early 2000s was the pinnacle for internal combustion engines in terms of maximum bang for buck combined with incredible longevity. Newer engines seem to be too strained, wringing every last bit of power from them shortens their lifespan, and complex emission control systems only exacerbate the issue. I can't deny that a modern 1.6 turbo can give the same power and torque of this big lazy 2.5 V6, but I bet the 1.6 will be far more worn out after 150,000 miles.
