I've been using Photoshop since 4.0. I restore really old photographs. Very time consuming and, often, I have to take artistic liberties bringing back lost detail. So, wow, I can tell you put some time into this one.

UNESCO forbids any addition to monuments and rebuilding them. If Egypt did this, it would not be considered an antiquity. The matter is very simple. There are great builders in Egypt to do this. To this day they sculpt these statues from stones of marble, granite, basalt and stone.

It would be sad to try to restore it that way ; the sphinx is important today because its was there for nearly 4500 years. Its fully normal to see some degradation on it by the time passing. On the other hand, the original recovering of the gizeh pyramid ( after 1000 AD ) , the parthenon ( destroyed in 1687 ) the Alexandria lighthouse ( destroyed in 1303 ) are really sad because those building could have been in nearly perfect condition today, but they missed it by a few centuries. Two case i always found absolutely horrible are the mont cassin monastery ( build in 529 destroyed in 1944, there is a video of it ) and the abbey of Cluny ( founded in 909, one of the biggest cathedral "Cluny III" of all the midle- age destroyed after the french revolution ) ...

I've always suspected the Sphinx represented a "female" creature or person ect. The features are definitely feminine. This reconstruction makes it even more clear to me anyway. There is no "bonded beard" depicted in statues of Pharaohs (Hapshetsut being the exception). There is also a theory that the original head of the Sphinx was re-carved.

On the crown, in the middle of the forehead, is supposed to be a cobra symbolizing the kingdom of Lower Egypt. The cobra's head and flared sides had broken off. I never even knew that the Sphinx had a beard until now. Amazing that these structures still remain after all this time.

Judging by the overwhelming positive response to this video, someone should build a replica of the Sphinx that looks like the final picture here. They would probably make a fortune in tourist dollars!
