I lived in a rental house for 17 years. It was built in 1947 of entirely used lumber, fixtures, hardware, etc. So... it was never new even when it was built! Between 1947 & 1986 when we moved in, it had been remodeled & added on several times. It eventually went from an approximately 700 square foot house to about 1000 square feet. We made a 100 square foot addition to enlarge the kitchen in 1987. The front & rear exterior doors had mortise locksets with plain painted metal doorknobs. (no keys, presumably lost.) The owner had added "modern" deadbolt locks. The bathroom door also had a mortise lockset. The entire house had only 5 doors. We added a door to the old addition & we moved the rear door to our kitchen addition. We replaced the 30 year old deadbolt locks with updated deadbolts & gave the owner copies of the keys. (along with the old deadbolt locks & keys) We had a lot of fun renovating that old house. We took all the mortise locks out, cleaned, lubricated & repainted them. They looked & worked much better after that.

@@Pjsev Haha yeah that sounds like enough. You can find plenty of uncut bit keys on eBay, but they're usually like $10+ per key unless you find a bulk listing of them. You could always buy a couple different keys and hope one would be the right size for the lock and could be cut to size. If you want to get a better idea of what you'd have to do if you decided to make a key yourself I show the process of making a key a bit better in my newer mortise lock restoration videos, such as the vide titled "Very Rusty Ornate 1880s Mortise Lock Restoration | Random Restoration."

I've been a Locksmith for 41 years now and have seen the same little mistakes over and over. Use grease to lubricate the parts. The two-piece or 'split' spindle is to remain loosened about 3/4 of a turn so that the inside handle can turn independently of the 'locked' outside handle. and please, in future, use files to cut the 'wards' in the keys. They are much more precise and the cuts look far better than ones made with a shaky Dremel tool. Respect for this undertaking! You did an amazing job! (btw), Rich folks houses used fewer keys than normal folks. They could afford to pay the locksmith to key them all the same. Love your video and keep up the good work!

Thanks for all the tips, Smooth Travel! I recently figured out what the split spindle does from a locksmith channel that was fixing up an old mortise lock - it’s a very good idea for sure! In my most recent video I restored a single mortise lock (I’m guessing you’ve watched it already) and I promise that I focused on quality over quantity with that one! I’ll see about using files in the future! Again, thanks a lot for all the tips, and thanks for watching!

@randomrestoration6858
@randomrestoration6858 3 жыл бұрын
Very cool! Since you noted it’s mounted on the exterior it sounds like you’re talking about a rim lock. If you do end up looking for a key, I’d recommend looking on eBay for an original uncut bit key/skeleton key, as there are universal ones that usually don’t seem to actually work most of the time and are very low quality to top it off. The most important thing is the post diameter. If it isn’t close to the correct size (as in if it is too thin) the key will have a bad feel to it, and the tab will usually catch the case. The tab size doesn’t matter as much - it just needs to be long enough and wide enough, but too wide or long is okay since it can easily be sanded down, whereas the post diameter is very difficult to resize. It sounds like you have the rest the rim lock sorted out nicely though!

Wonderful restoration. I grew up in an old house with these kinds of mortise locks. Took one apart when I was a kid and cleaned/oiled it, but didn't do this level of restoration. It always struck me that the old-fashioned skeleton keys must have been easy to replicate. How secure were people's houses?

These old mortise locks are definitely cool! Cleaning and lubricating one is more than most of these old mortise locks have had done to them in the past haha. The old keys are pretty simple, but between different manufacturers, there were different sized width in cases different sized keyhole openings, different locations and size of the warding, etc. it would be highly unlikely for someone back in the day to walk to their neighbors house with a random key and unlock their front door. That said, most of these locks are single lever, so someone that knew what they were doing would have really no trouble picking them, though I don’t know how common that was. Thanks for watching!

I opened mine up. It is a 5164 like one that you had to make the top metal spring to the door handle. Mine was broken. 36:23 I rigged something up temporary but need to make a solid one. I was amazed that our lock was not rusted very much at all. The case looked really good, only a tiny bit of rust between parts to the dead bolt parts. No painting needed at all....I hate to have to replace the whole thing. I was thinking of buying another used lock, but if that is a part that breaks over time I risk getting another broken one. HELP? 1
@randomrestoration6858
@randomrestoration6858 2 жыл бұрын
Nice, 5164s are a much better design than what many companies of the time offered, and are very reliable! Haha no need to replace the whole mortise lock, those flat springs are commonly broken after all these years, but are designed to be easily replaced. Any locksmith should be able to do it for you, otherwise if you search for "HPC FRS-4 FLAT & ROUND SPRING STEEL ASSORTMENT LOCK REPAIR" on eBay you'll find an assortment of flat and round spring steel. It's a bit pricey, but will be a lifetime supply of the stuff haha. You'd also need to have some metal cutters to cut it to the correct length. If you do end up doing it yourself I'd recommend opening another one of your locks in the house to see the width of the original spring to find the best matching spring in the assortment, and to easily see both the shape and how long the new spring you make should be. Then using some pliers, bend the replacement spring to approximately the correct shape and test it out a few times with the door knobs to make sure it isn't too softly/stiffly tensioned. Good luck, and if you have any more questions I'll gladly answer them!

In your desire to repair or restore these mortise locks, you are missing a couple minor points. These locks wear and when you paint the covers and insides of the lock, this actually can help tighten up the loose tolerances between parts. So for example the latch bolt on these mortise locks wears and becomes smaller in over all dimensions as it wears. Adding a few thousands of an inch in paint thickness should tighten up or reduce the openings slightly. Yes taping the covers is a good idea, but this is not a device with very tight tolerances. In some cases tapping the openings in the cover and face plate are required, but in most cases the extra thickness in paint is a good thing. As far as for your desire to make the flat springs inside of these locks thicker, which may make you think its better, its not. The thicker spring stock will wear out the internal components faster as it will require more torque and effort to operate the door knobs or levels. The only time you would want to increase the thickness of these flat springs are when you add heavier door knobs or levels to the unit. A few thousands of an inch in greater thickness is all that should be used. You might try to braze the bronze parts to make them bigger in dimensions and then file them down carefully to make them fit tighter.
@randomrestoration6858
@randomrestoration6858 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the detailed comment, Bob! I do agree that there is no harm at all in painting the areas that I ended up taping off, as these are non precision components. In fact, I've seen mortise locks which the area around the hub was painted from the factory, so it certainly is not unheard of, and (I think you'll agree) will cause absolutely no harm to the lock itself if the paint wears/chips. If I'm honest, I though that I was going to catch some grief for painting the interior of the locks, despite the fact that they were originally painted that way. I also thought I was going to catch a bit of grief if I didn't tape those areas off, which is the main reason I did. As far as the springs go, I mostly eyeballed the ones I replaced which is why they're thicker than the original. I recently bought a digital caliper, so in the future I can measure the thickness of the original spring and replace it with an exact/very close new spring. Next time I do some mortise lock restorations I'll make sure to put it to use. Thanks you for watching, and again thanks for the comment!

So I always wondered what would you charge to restore a set of Mortise locks like these?
@randomrestoration6858
@randomrestoration6858 2 жыл бұрын
It's a very good question, but I'm not exactly sure either currently haha. I'd imaging it really depends on the quality of work (for example these are way lower quality than my later mortise lock restorations) and how many there were to restore, but I'd be curious what a ballpark estimate would be for restorations like this. Thanks for watching, Alex!

Hi, just found your channel three days ago but I love it so much! I've always wanted these types of locks in my house, and you've inspired me to try restoring some myself. Where do you find your pieces?
@randomrestoration6858
@randomrestoration6858 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, Amy! These locks are weirdly fun to work on, but if you do decide to restore some be cautious of lead based paint - it's common to see these old locks and slathered in years worth of sketchy house paint. I'd say the easiest way to find old mortise locks is on eBay. The real trick is finding multiple identical mortise locks if you were going to do up a whole house. Thank you for watching!

Why are they called mortise locks?
@randomrestoration6858
@randomrestoration6858 2 жыл бұрын
Good question - The lock case is installed inside the chiseled out section (called a mortise) of the door. Older locks weren't installed in a mortise and instead were installed on the surface of the door. These were called rim locks. Thanks as always for watching!

@45:54 I can't help being concerned that the leaf spring looks to be too strong for the delicate casting it's working on. I can visualise the neck snapping in use.

Agreed, I ended up having to adjust most of the new springs after a bit of testing. You definitely don't want way too much pressure on all the internal components!

I also have some old locks in my house I live in. It was built in the 1920s and I would to restore the 3 I have on existing doors. One was manufactured by Chantrell tool co # 376 and I also have a Corbin still on the bathroom door. I would like to know I can obtain a diagram of the interior of both of these locks, any ideas? Thanks

@randomrestoration6858 3 жыл бұрын
Cool! Well unfortunately it’s unlikely you’ll find any diagrams for the interior of you locks, so the best thing to do would be take a picture of the interior components prior to disassembly. They really only go together one way, so think of them as a puzzle of sorts haha. Thanks for watching!

@randomrestoration6858
@randomrestoration6858 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Kevin! I bought the spring steel in this video on eBay, but it looks like the listing is no longer there. I just had a look at UK eBay and could not find anything like what I bought, so I'm not entirely sure where you might find some online. Most websites that sell spring steel seem to want you to order very sizeable quantity for some reason. I suppose you could have a look around at a larger hardware store and they might have some. Sorry for not being able to help you out better!
