I have an old 1935 regal dobro with a slotted head and for over forty years it was like going to a knife fight changing the strings on the thing. Decided to check KZbin, found your tutorial and applied it today. It worked so beautifully I could weep!

Thanks for clearing up the whole "its not safe to take all the strings off at the same time" myth. I've been playing guitar for years and I've always taken the strings all off at once and have never had an issue. I have heard that myth many times from other guitar players as well!

Super helpful! Was strumming my Martin 000-15sm while watching this and now I'm going to restring her the right way! Thank you Dave! Martin guitar company is the best!

Although I've restrung guitars for years some nice tips here and well presented. I'm look forward to restringing my 00 21 and 00015 SM without stabbing myself and without dealing with those long tails. I know it was obvious but some of us never stop learning.

Love these videos! I love Martin guitars, and even though I don't have one with a slotted headstock ( I would love to someday own one) this was fun and interesting to watch!

Is it ok to use phosphor bronze strings , let's say custom light ones to a slotted headstocked guitar?? I've always had this doubt. I've got both one slotted headstocked guitar and one solid. I've heard the slotted one should have only nylon strings, but as for sound, I prefer bronze ones, I just need to know I won't eventually damage my instrument because of doing this. Thanks in advance for your response!

Depends on the guitar, if you have a classical guitar (wide, flat fretboard, big plastic tuning axles, a bridge without pins), it is NOT OK. The higher tension of the steel strings will ruin your guitar (deform the top, warp the neck, shear the bridge off). If you have a steelstring guitar, it's doable. They are designed for that higher stringtension. Rule of thumb: a bridge without bridgepins: no steel strings. A bridge with pins: steel strings.

That's a great tutorial... But, how does this transpose to a slotted head 12 string?? Just asking as I've just bought a vintage Ovation 1615 Pacemaker, and I'm a little wary when it eventually comes to restringing this guitar.

Anyone recognize the string cutter Dave uses? What are good brands out there for doing this wihout nicking slots? Thanks.
