Welcome back to the official Thompson Resume Writing KZbin channel where I share weekly videos full of tips, hacks, and best practices to help you update refresh or prepare your resume and LinkedIn profile for your job search along with job search advice, career tips, and some personal stories of my own.
I am Tamika Thompson, I am the owner and resume at TWRC., I specialize in transforming bland, lackluster resumes and LinkedIn profiles into powerful selling tools that help corporate mid-level, management, and executive professionals land interviews 2X faster.
If you are new to my channel I’m so happy you stumbled across my video content and I hope you enjoy this video enough to subscribe. If you are a returning subscriber, of course, I always appreciate you all staying loyal and staying in tune with my uploads.
Because May is the month to recognize and appreciate all the moms out there, in today’s video I will be giving several resume tips specifically for moms who have been out of the workforce for quite some time and are looking to return.
__
In the U.S., there are roughly 23 million working moms and they make up about 72% of the workforce.
There are many reasons why moms take a break from work.
Unfortunately, once they take a year or a few off to focus on motherhood and other responsibilities, it can be challenging to explain the gap year they now have on their resume.
And sadly, there’s a lot of bias and stigma that moms face in their job search as they’re looking to get back to work.
Questions about if they’re really ready, if they will be dependable and committed, and where work falls on their list of priorities.
Aka Mom-bias, which is whack!
If you’re a mom who has recently taken a career break to tend to your kids, here are some resume tips to help you.
Tips include:
How to list your job title
What responsibilities to include
The best resume layout + format you should use
& More!

I’ve gone to my schools career centers, asked professors but even they seem to show bias and I feel like they don’t help me put my best skills or impression of me on paper but now I can go with these tips to help me finalize my resume and hope to begin my career growth and get out this house to make my own money and offer more opportunities to my children and re,I’ve some pressure from my husband!Thank you !❤❤❤❤

Here I in your channel, I starter being a stay at home mom since 2018 till present day but I'm so ready to go back into the work force. Its been awhile since I have been to an interview. I went to my first interview for panda express and I completely blew it. Anxiety and the thought of talking about me as a stay at home mom made it even worse. But your video help boost my confidence 👍🏻

@@mikathompson I had success! I found a perfect part time job working only 4 days week. This was exactly what I was looking for. I put myself out there with NO work history (in the last 2 decades at least) and it worked out. Now I have work history that I can put on my resume when I’m ready to look for something full time. Thanks everyone for being so nice.

Is it better to list it as a career break on Linked in or “ household manager “? … also , Thank you so much for this ! For the first time ever I felt like I could add value to a company after being a stay at home mom for 10 years. Society isn’t nice to stay at home moms ..Thank you for your positive energy .. also , I’m currently going back to school to get new skills and confidence to get back out there .

Good question! I would recommend listing the title as "Household Manager" for sure. I also have a video that I recorded not too long ago that talks about how to address career gaps on your resume and LinkedIn. I recommend checking it out if you're still curious about this question. I appreciate your kind words and feedback! Thank you for watching, and I hope you found a great position, or at least still interviewing for your next opportunity.

Thank you for making this video. My husband is a stay-at-home-dad to care for me and our daughter since she was born 2 years ago. He's looking to get back into the workforce soon now that I'm physically doing better and can help physically care for our daughter. It's very helpful to know that he could list a lot of skills and experiences as a SAHD. You are amazing! Thanks again!

Hi! Just a little nugget - using these tips are meant to help you optimize your resume so you can land interviews. Landing a job offer includes so many other steps not included here, but I do have a lot of helpful videos re: interviewing tips. My advice is to at least get started. You never know how things can/will work in your favor :) lmk if you have additional questions!

FYI - other women judge and put down other women... sad and abnoxious. Don't mind these "mean girls". All my career mom friends wish they could pull out and be home with their kids. Many are single moms and busting their rump - exhausted. Tip: include ALL volunteer work. School events, bake sale, field trips, PTA, etc. If you belong to a church or house of faith and volunteer, add that. If you've taken any on-line classes or seminars, add that. This sounds all good, but I think most people will roll their eyes. Many working moms are also doing this in addition to a FT job. I think there needs to be volunteer work outside of the home. Be proud of pulling out of the workforce to mother. So many women desperately want this. Just do it! Start! Eventually, you'll get that first foot in the door. Never allow anyone make you feel like you are nothing for wanting to be a sahm. It's a blessing to us and most importantly, our kids have gotten the best start in life. Good luck and GB.

Iv take an break for about 13yrs. I’m so terrified with the thought of getter back to work, even picking up a call n talking to recruiter I’m terrified. I haven’t volunteered, I’m not sure what type of job I should apply for? I worked for a year + as supply chain coordinator n earlier I worked out of country as an admin/training coordinator. Im not able to recognize my own skills that can translate into a skill for a job. Please do advise how I should move forward.

I would focus first on the type of jobs/roles you want. Once you do that, you can target your resume for those jobs. From there, you may want to brush up on your interviewing skills and building your confidence. I hope this helps!

Thank you for your advice and enlightenment!! Do you have career advice for a stay at home parent caregiver (DPOA) and also life and estate management. I have a huge gap in my resume. I had to leave my back to an educational program to change careers, as a 50yo..woman. to care for my parents, with no help. I am now 60yo. I have a lot of experience in many different subjects. but scared to death because I feel like I have PTSD from it all.
@mikathompson
@mikathompson Жыл бұрын
You're so welcome! I recommend listing your time as a caregiver for your parent(s) as a job on your resume. For your bullet points, you will list the tasks you completed for them. This way, instead of having a large gap, you at least are providing some context as to what you were doing during that time. Since you have a lot of experience, you may want to 1) figure out what you really want for your next role and 2) center/focus your resume on that by including the most relevant experience related to that. I hope this helps! Feel free to email me at hello@thompsonresumes.com if you need more info.

What is your opinion on using the title of “ Domestic Engineer” in place of Stay At Home Mom. I have literally had this suggested to me and it just feels weird. 😬
@mikathompson
@mikathompson 11 ай бұрын
Personally, I don't like it. It's too overinflated. Plus, I don't think "Domestic Engineer" would be a keyword a recruiter would use to screen a resume. Was this an AI suggestion by chance?
@annarushing8924
@annarushing8924 11 ай бұрын
great points! It was not an AI suggestion, it was actually suggested to me through people that I personally know. They all keep telling me that Homemaker/Stay at home mom is just not recognized or appreciated and you have to be creative in how you word it. I was told by another to completely leave that off. Which makes no sense because that is exactly what I have been doing for the previous 10 years of my life. I took your advice from the video though and added my last name and then Household Manager. I am trying to think of all the things to put in the task section now for bullet points. Thank you for your reply!@@mikathompson
