As I understand it, Goons originally started out as a veterans-led organization which was pretty effective and tight-knit, but then pretty much all the leadership got deployed. What ended up happening is that the most toxic and vile narcissists then rushed in to fill the power vacuum and we ended up with the Goons we know and hate today. For a while, I was a spy and would listen in on Goon's voice coms and it was the most toxic, childish, scream-filled fest you can possibly imagine, with groups of 5-6 people just all screaming insults at each other. I have no idea how they are even remotely effective in combat. They are hands down some of the most disgusting human beings I have ever witnessed and I'm surprised they haven't imploded. Hmm weird I’ve been In almost every sig and squad and the largest corp in the alliance for many years. Never heard any toxicity besides some sperg once in awhile mostly to just add levity to 10 hr organized comms without sperg or losing a fight and leadership wanting to leave us with a fun experience. However just like any other group There are always bad apples. I’ve heard way more toxicity in pandemic legion comms when they were relevant and nc when they were relevant. Anyone can get into any groups comms and one dumbass who likely gets kicked from corp 2 days after and say that the entire group is toxic. I would argue that if toxicity was going to come out in droves it would be while we were getting blue balled while getting invaded by the entire game for what seemed like forever, But nope comms was pretty chill. However hatred fuels content and being in a group who spends a year of your time barely taking fights then all you see is people from said groups shitting on your group tends to cause a bad reaction towards your group and goons hold a grudge. What is funny though is peoples hatred towards mittens has fueled hundreds of wars and endless hours of content and brought out the darkest hatred in humans. If anything non goons should thank him for endless content and goons should thank him for being the poster child and taking all of the hatred and putting it on his back for so many years.

In the twilight of my Eve Online gameplay, I started to get more and more into Roleplay, particularly during the Triglavian Invasion. I got introduced to many roleplay communities and participated with them. Its then that I learned the true face of much of the Roleplay in Eve. Styling myself as an ally of the Triglavians, I was naturally subject to opposition from those roleplayers on the other side. I maintained my character and never crossed the line, I didn't even walk the line. Those opposed however took every opportunity to hurl abusive and demeaning comments towards me and others, using Roleplay to justify it. And the same could be said from people on my side of the roleplay. I put up with it longer than I should, but finally broke character one day to call these people out for their disgusting behaviour, and many took my side. I took no further part in Eve Online roleplay, now that I saw its true face.

Take a chess player, and their play is ruthless. The game is played in real life, each opponent sitting across from the other. After the game is over, instead of shaking the opponent's hand, they "flip off" their opponent and laugh at them. The point is that there is a difference, a boundary between the game and behavior outside the game. Additionally, in the case of the in-person chess match, the opponents aren't anonymous, and they are in each other's physical presence. Meaning that there is more risk for acting in a mean or demeaning manner. In MMORPGs, the boundary is much less clear. Additionally, the people are protected by anonymity; no one in their real lives need know how they behaved. I have heard the excuse, "Its just a game," and if they didn't want something bad to happen, they shouldn't have been playing Eve (or some other game). The problem is that humans are physical, emotional, social beings and how you treat others and how you are treated matters. No one deserves to be treated badly in any of these areas of life. Additionally, abusive, toxic people will always have some sort of excuse: If they didn't want to be shaved, they shouldn't have been sheep. Because on-line is nearly entirely anonymous, that is when acting kindly and avoiding taking advantage or abusing others is the most important. Just like when you give your word is more important than your name on a legal contract. I doubt this Mitten person would be ok with his behavior being known to everyone in his off-line life. If his mother knew what he had done, would she have been happy? My rule I try and follow is I never do anything I wouldn't want everyone in my life to know about. To be clear, I'm not an angel and I haven't always acted in a manner that is consistent with this. But the exceptions to this have been just that: exceptions. When you live your life, day to day, being a mean-spirited, toxic abusive jerk, you have a really screwed up value system. I would even go so far as to say that you are a really screwed up person. Plus, when the time comes when someone has more power than you and you become a victim, can you look yourself in the mirror realizing that you effectively did the same thing to someone else, that you did so regularly? How you conduct yourself in all areas of your life matters and, "its only a game" doesn't cut it. Those are real people at the end other end of those keyboards. .

It all comes down to how effective the new leader is at providing engaging content for the swarm. If he can then many of them will remain and be happy in a newer less toxic way. If he can't then he will be ousted or ignored and they will put someone in who fits Goon's "culture" or they will fracture into smaller groups and battle it out in a civil war. Which actually sounds like it could be way cool to watch happen. Regardless the Mittani had to go. It was just too much and couldn't be tolerated any longer. There were the usual bs about he said she said and I wasn't really involved... it was a mess in reddit the day it went down. But there is a huge opportunity here. With all of these big MMOs it's always the same, 'it was immensely popular, but had a toxic player base and there was lots of abuse...' and then that gets 'fixed' with new rules and moderators, etc., so it's 'so much better now' but then 'unfortunately, the game started to lose popularity and the player numbers dropped down...'. Same pattern, over and over. It's almost as if the backbone of any MMO is the kind of people who play for hours everyday and spend most of their extra money on game related activities, almost as though those people have almost no IRL social life outside the game and the game is the one place they feel like they can be themselves. It's almost like creating new rules for the benefit of occasional players or to impress IRL media creeps that don't really like games but just play games to review them as their job, ie, the kind of people who demand IRL social rules to apply to every game and hobby, will drive out the people who love the game the most and leave mostly the people who don't really play that much so the game dies down. Companies need to stop doing this, stop catering to what are really non-players, stop listening to reviews or media creeps talking about a popular game's 'toxic repuation', thinking they're going to bring in new players by 'cleaning up' when it's the 'toxic elements' in the game that made it popular to begin with. 'Games journalists' are not gamers, their opinions should always be ignored, following advice from 'games journalists' will destroy a game, they should know that, the pattern has repeated over and over enough for companies to know that.

Sir Molle gone, Gigx banned, PGL a joke, Mittani gone, Gobbins is around, but he's always been more of a figure in the shadows, not a public face. wheres the big name people in current eve generating memorable conflicts.... right now the only conflcits are for desperation for content, and have little impact or memory. they forgotten so fast as they not clashes with meaning past wanting something to shoot at. not saying Mittani was a good person, but he was a well known face and thus a reason to go to war against him.

Hi, interesting take. But on your “the victim becomes the bully“ narative just a small observation from experience and knowledge about social systems and communication. (Important note! Not talking about the Mittani here, just your example) Every bully lives in an specific social environment, that encourages/ enables/ “psycjologically forces“ him or her to act out the bully lurking in the dark. Victims, who “overthrow“ a bully will find themselves in a very short lived place of power as the new (revenge/ reverse)-bully. If they really were victims of bullying, then they, by design, will not want or be able to keep up their bullying position and someone else will fill that role asap. (Not saying, that former victims cant go on to become bitter bullies themselves --but they need a new social environment for that.) So wheretf am I going with this? As much as I understand it, if a victim can become the new topdog, then what you wittnessed was not bullying, but a powerstruggle between two ppl fighting for the leadership. The big diffence being, that a powerstruggle is between two people (sucking in the group), while bullying is a group problem (sucking in the bully and the victim). The former ends when there is a winner, the latter can only end, when the whole group changes.

When the cowboy bebop movie came out when I was 16 17 I dreampt of such a game where I could be a space cowboy, be anything I wanted, I found eve and have been playing since 2007. It's so sad how once pay to play showed up and now with pay to win mechanics, you can see the decline in the authenticity of the original outlook. I spent my first year in hs and then I immediately became an information broker. I found pleasure in building connections earning trust, then turning around and selling your trade routes, store hubs and on occasion have led fleets to your doorsteps. In the later years, I opened 14 other accounts and paid a lot of money to skill them into what I jeered to become am independent capital builder Corp solo, with the express purpose to pump out dozens of capitals a week for the war effort to anyone who contracted me out. I have fought my brothers and sisters as well as thrown my coffers st their war efforts as well, most of the time playing sides against another so I could sell more ships. Eve in the last 3 years has disappointed me update after update. This game was NEVER supposed to be touched by pay to win mechanics and that at its core was why we were there. The eve economy was instantly fucked by the pay to win mechanics directly affecting the entire eve market place. My corporation became obsolete. So sad the empire I built. CCP sold out and took us vets with them. Which sucks because it came at a time the game needed massive overhauling.

Just like any new emerging tech/economy there are bad actors, and the game is progressing. Eve was shaped by this person and the way people view the game! So ultimately its bad he’s gone, but also a good thing because it allows the game to reshape itself into something new.

Blind devotion is with CODE and entities alike. Those play EULA on very thin line between griefing and harassment masked with role playing. Mittani was only poster boy for alliance, a walking talking billboard that ultimately have little to nothing to alliance itself. Majority of people in goons do their mandatory fleets etc but are there by convenience not by loyalty like with any bigger alliance. Thing is with mandatory fleets (i think 3 fleets minimum per month per player) and their SRP system that mostly contribute to the feeling of loyalty since srp covers like 50 to 100% ship value so sometimes loosing ship in fleet earns you money and taking that fear of loosing money from eve player makes them eager to pvp more. But CODE and things like ex SNUFF etc etc are just in game to see it burn and forced even eve creators to quit making content due to griefing. Compared to them goons are amateurs in being bad.

The ideia that a suicidal person is playing Eve to escape or sending help letters to Mittami is ridiculous. Eve is a harsh game where most people will screw you up. You will lose everything and see many hours of your time go down the drain in an instant many times. It is not an environment where people who are depressed will get any better or be able to stay for long. The letter was obviously fake and Mittami knew it, thus his tirade about it. Either way what made Eve different was that it was a real sandbox. Starting to police speech behavior no matter e how egregious you may think it is will ultimately destroy it. There is no such a thing as hate speech. There is just speech you don't like, and when you start defining things as "hate speech" there is nothing that cannot be classified as such.

A lot of CCP dev's used to be very close with BOB, rumor was they all had characters in there, tech 2 BPO's spawned, silly things. I remember when goons first started, fleets of frigates would chase you down, everyone laughed, what can they do, they only fly frigates, then it wasn't funny anymore, they were in bigger ships, and better fleets. But they were always nasty, scamming was a way of life. When BOB fell, all we did is replace one overlord with another, you went into BOB space you got killed, you went in to goon space you got killed. The Mittani always struck me as a nasty bully, if he has a job I'll bet he treats his colleague the same. the trouble is the main dev's who formed what Eve was mostly went on to other projects, the remaining Dev's now fully embrace and encourage the goon play style, when I started playing the wonder of seeing a Dominix with fifteen drones swarming around it, as I flew past, wondering how people landed on the gate (insta bookmarks) escrow, It was an immersive game, now its just a gankfest.

Then, having sent PAPI fleeing in disarray after their year-long campaign, Delta Sqad turned around and did in three weeks what PAPI couldn't accomplish with 150k people over the course of a year: they defeated Mittani. Delta Sqad: 2. The entire rest of nullsec: 0. Just let that sink in.

I left everything down there, eventually sold it all at a huge discount but man. The goons. I did get a peak behind the veil at their operations. I hadn't done any espionage for years by that time, but my instincts still kicked in. Going through their maim systems and seeing how their "war room" was was inspiring and terrifying. I have seen organizatioknfor power like that on scale since reading emoyrean age and knowing that the goons were doing something even larger. I'm in dronelands solo now, making 10 bil every 8 active hours running escalations in total silence. But if i see a goon, I'm following and tryna risk it for the KM.

There are many types of leadership. But every last one of those archetypes of leadership falls into two categories. Good. And bad. Those are the only two categories that all leadership falls under. And you know what I speak of when it comes to leadership being good or bad. There is no in-between. There is no grey area of leadership, or different levels of greyness. There are no thousand levels of grey. Either you're a good leader, or you're a bad leader. A good leader, knows how to instill confidence in others, protects others, and helps others learn. The supreme goal of a good leader is to create other good leaders. That's the ultimate final goal of a good leader. To produce other good leaders. There is no other goal beyond that. And all the actions a good leader does is to produce more leaders of good quality, or even better quality. Now we get to the bad. A bad leader can do everything that a good leader can do. However, their personal choices of, producing an outcome by any means necessary, no matter the cost, no matter who gets hurt....that's a sign of bad leadership. And bad leadership may at times produce results, but it also produces unintended results that create a bad environment. And this environment can spread and cause worse situations to form. This is a sign of bad leadership. What you do, does it produce a net positive for all involved. Or did it produce something that causes a negative situation that's going to linger and grow. A sign of good leadership is when the leadership not only cares for those under their care, but also cares for those that are not directly under their umbrella. A sign of bad leadership is when the leader goes, "That's not my problem." If you caused the situation, which caused a negative reaction, a negative impact, or they continuously state that they don't care, then this person might not be a good leader. Most will see this as a "hardened" individual. Someone with a "thick skin". But nothing could be further from the truth. This type of leader has severe problems, and they intend to hurt others, both friend and foe, to hide their own shortcomings. A bad leader will not only attack their opponents, but they will also attack their allies, or even those under their umbrella. And in most cases of a bad leader, they will "double down" on very poor decisions when it comes to making command decisions in relation to others. A good leader will admit their mistakes. They will own their mistakes. And a good leader will even apologize. A bad leader will admit a mistake, but then use some excuse to blame others for their own mistakes. They will not own their mistake, or even state that a mistake was made, in their minds the mistake was never a mistake. And a bad leader will never apologize without first giving an excuse for their own actions or behavior. Which leader are you? It's a serious question. But for those that read my words, some will understand. Many of you will not. And the one's that do not, are the future bad leaders.

There is a lot to unpack about "The Mittani" but keep in mind that he went to as many player meet ups as he could and often was verbally and sometimes physically assaulted by people who were opposed to goons in the game. Also there is a huge difference between the character and the person behind the character. At irl meet ups he promoted everyone to hang out together as Eve players and if you were insulting to anyone he would call it out and remind people that out of game was "fun" time and that "in game divisions" were for game time not irl. If you haven't ever gone to an Eve meet as an Eve player you are missing out. Unless you cannot separate irl from the game, then stay home you should look for help from a mental health professional.

In past we at least could mine and stuff and make profit with mining ship loses being acceptable and expendable writeoffs, but now its painful wallet hit as barge can nowadays stove mere 1,7-2m of cash in ore and costs over 60m to buy vs. 6-8m it could stove before economic recession when it costed sometimes less than half and which more than often is lovely target practice for one of those HS-suicide chumps. Simply speaking HS mining on itself is a joke. I actually gave up on this endeavor after being attacked several times in few days in such armpit of nowhere as Khanid Prime, which is so far away from most of routes, you would sooner expect Santa Claus to show up there than organised gankers. Never once was Mittani ever mentioned in my very tiny corner of the New Eden, although an interview of him on YT was one of things that peeked my interest in the game. I find it odd it took ten years to get here, but maybe he's just a good politician. That's really all I can say about him. IMHO, I think CCP failing to fix or address very old very obvious problems is what's been driving away players. It was a turn off as it indirectly affected me at the market. Frankly, I feel CCP is trying to shake off the game. I would be fine with this if I knew they would simply start anew with fresh new servers and software, maybe a new backstory and so on, but I don't think that's the plan. I think they'd rather transition to a more profitable play style and let EVE Online decay like a zombie. You might tell me to have faith, but with the Minecraft bs, Halo gone woke, Nintendo taking stabs at wokeness, and the colossal cluster bomb of the Star Trek gaming sphere in early 2000's, I'm running a bit low. Until I see improvement set in stone, I won't be 'making the time' for any game. Ranting aside, there is still some hope, and if I foresee more free time, I'll probably come back if things haven't gone too far downhill. Good luck to us all.
