Don't forget to change the transmission and rear axle oils too. Both of those have breather which most likely were under water and allowed the tranny and axle to fill up with water too.

I lost the keys to my VW bug a few years back. I decided to replace the door locks and ignition with a new key. I tore the door panels off and found bare wires trying to burn through the insulation. Later that week I found the keys. Life has a mysterious way of letting you find problems you didn't know about.

I just thought, dropping the fuel tank and inspect the pump and level float is the best thing, to clean it you could use e85 and shake it really well, rince and repeat. Water would mix with e85 and be removed then dry it. I know you won't forget the gearbox / axle as the breathers might have been underwater too. This car is well taken care of and loved. Cheers from France 💪

@Cj72290 think of it this way. You're in the shallow end of the pool. You install a pump in the pool. You direct the outlet of the pump away from you to the deep end of the pool. Does your water get any lower? No. Only way you're going to not get wet is by never going in the pool.

Thank god this is a pretty simple car, so it's very repairable. Not so much on a rolling techno-box of today. That is such a cool little car, would be great for small town driving where I live, but of course we'll NEVER get such things. Just bigger, and bigger and of course more expensive SUV's and Trucks thanks to the stupid CAFE standards and chicken tax! It's just really refreshing to see such simple engineering again.

if I were a youtuber making tons of money (or enough money to afford a choice in general), the first thing I'd do after seeing a video like this is make 100% sure to read the flood zone charts of any area I'm house shopping and pay the extra money to live upland or in a geographically advantageous area (the highest point surrounded by valleys for instance) for exactly this situation. Homes are permanent and if there's a chance you're in a flood zone, the statistics are definitely stacked against you. I know a lot of people buy houses like "well what are the CHANCES of THAT??? I been here 8 years so far so good!" It's not about what usually doesn't happen, it's about that random 14th, 15th, 25th year where you lose everything in ONE moment (and the longer it takes, the more you usually lose). because it is your HOUSE. a constant point in space in time when speaking in lifespans of human beings. Cheap areas are cheap for a reason. (much of the south included... the wizard of Oz's opening plot wasn't based on nothing. They certainly aren't cheaper due to being nice!)

I had a car with water damage from a broken rear windshield with cable oxidation from the connector 1 meter into the wiring loom, I had to replace the whole harness since the oxidation created some electrical malfunction due to drop in amperage. Of course it was a Lexus and the wiring was for one of the computers.

I’ve figured out watching this video is that you guys never worked on any old cars. Tapping the starter is old trick! That rust is extremely minor. You are talking about it like the car is rotted in half! There was hardly any water in that oil! Last car I had get flooded it poured out 3 gallons of water and then oil. I flushed it out with diesel fuel. Dumped oil in it and fired it up. Then kept changing the oil until it came out clear after heat cycling it each change. Did that 4 times. Then started driving it.
