My father recently passed away. He downsized his life 25 years ago and moved into a small apt building in Port Townsend, Wa. steps from the water. He would walk along the beach, ride his tric to the grocery store, and take the Ferry just because it was a nice day. Without question, I never saw him stressed out about anything since he downsized. Quite honestly, I didn't understand why he did it. Back then, most should have been doing downsizing at McDonalds, considering how most people look today ( I digress). He would always say that he had found the perfect lifestyle. Carefree & stress-free. It took me a few decades to fully grasp what he was saying. Thank you for your videos.

My grandmother was a widow and had to work. She lived in a very humble basement studio apt., and kept house for an older lady upstairs. She had me come stay with her for a week every summer. We ate out, went to the movies, and visited nearby cousins. She also sewed for me. She had almost nothing material, but the memories are still clear, and wonderful.

Sold our older house when we retired. Invested some of the proceeds in tech stocks. All the bedrooms were upstairs so we knew it would be a problem down the road. Moved to an apartment very close to man made lake, market, small restaurants, etc We walk 3 to 4 miles daily. Also, use small gym and pools on site. No more home repairs, maintenance, association fees, etc. Like that apartment is on ground floor. Travel often, without having to worry about the house. Lock the front door and go. Enjoy your channel.

Almost 3 years ago we went ahead and sold our big house in downsized to a condo. It is in a retirement community. Although we don't plan on hanging around a lot the next few years, we do think it will be a great place as we age. They are always getting together and doing things. Last summer during covid they would rotate driveways and everyone would bring their own lawn chair, and set socially distant so they could still enjoy one another's company. I thought it was wonderful. Thanks for sharing! Lynn and Danny

I love minimalism. I am in the process to sell the house and I don't want to bring Anything with me. No more dragging things around with me. The cost to drag the old stuff with you isn't worth it. When I figure out where I want to be I'll buy a few new items - just what I need - that's all.. no mounds of clutter. Having the minimum is freedom ...

Everyone has to make their own choices... it’s good to be informed of choices they may not have even thought of. A friend of mine did what you did. She and her husband sold their home in California, kept some items, gave sentimental items to their kids and they started traveling full time... and visited their kids when they went back to the states. She was a writer and wrote a terrific book about their seniors adventures. They were very happy and when he eventually slowed down, they built a house they would rent on AirBnB when they were away. One thing, I’ve only learned in recent years, is that there are no rules... we get to live our lives by our own choices. Take care Tina & Norm. Have a lovely Sunday. Cheers 🥂 🍻 🍷

Different strokes for different folks... Am enjoying ‘homeownership’ in retirement; finally have time to putter indoors & out which keeps me in touch with nature & provides exercise! Cut first batch of lettuce this morning, looking forward to another bountiful veggie season. Adding perennials throughout the property that are drought tolerant in order to cut back on maintenance & ecological stress of a lawn. Lovely to view this ever changing canvas each year. AND... we have pets; 9 at present. Doubt an apartment complex would permit that. For us, it seems like there are so many RULES already; moving to a condominium, apartment, gated community or a neighborhood association would be heartbreaking. 💔 We also love our privacy; it is a sanctuary from the world. When socialization is needed, art galleries, shopping malls, adult education classes, senior centers, etc. are available. We have no human children; simply require our own safe space. Am happy you have made the right choice for yourselves.

I have a little house, in a small town, on the shores of Lake Erie. There is a main floor bedroom and full bath in the house. The library is next door, the post office, grocery store and LCBO are within 2 blocks. And the lake and marina are less than 10 km due south. This is my "growing old" house. Excellent! My husband has retired early at 55 and we sold our house in California, moved to our house in Oregon to be by our adult daughter and son-in-law, and helped them buy a house themselves. Now we are looking for a beach property for the same reason you mentioned, gives us all a place to go relax and just enjoy each other's company. We did keep one rental property in CA because the rent we collect is good income. People here in the states always dream of moving away to Florida or some Caribbean beach town, but the truth is you should retire where family is and create new experiences for everyone.

Thank you, Tina and Norm for your wonderful videos. You are both an inspiration and your positivity is contagious. We have lost our ability to "attract" our adult children with an RV by a lake in a resort or the prospect of an inheritance. Consequently, we do not get to see them or our grandchildren anymore. However, one of our siblings, who has successfully managed to acquire the necessary financial resources, has access to our adult children & grandchildren. The lesson is: If you lose your money, you might also lose your adult children & grandchildren, depending on the family dynamics. If that happens, get professional help with the grief and loss, as well as moving forward without them. We are not the only ones this has happened to, so we hope our sharing this side of it might help someone out there. Cheers! 🙂

I understand these issues. I am age 70 and my husband is 75 and we have faced many of these issues as well. We had a 2,800 sq. ft. home on 5-acre with outbuildings and an in the ground pool with three bedroom and you are right...children move other states where the jobs are and children DO NOT come back the same way the other generations used to. Add to this if you are divorced and remarried like we are ....that ads up to another layer of managing financially in retirement. We bought into a small condo (w/29 owners) and this is working for us. This gives us a step-up the property ladder to make up for losing our assets at the time of our earlier divorce. This condo asset will give us additional money to live on later on in our life when we end up selling it and moving into a tiny low-cost senior apartment in the future. A second recreational property is not for us...- added costs, added maintenance etc. I co-owned a cottage for 14 years and the costs almost broke us. Our retirement advisor said, "DO NOT rent an apt. or a home....you need an asset that will grow." So we bought a very nice condo in a resort/tourist area that is highly desirable and goes up in value approx. $100,000 every ten years. I just made sure that the roof had already been replaced and that the condo HOA fees are reasonable. We are doing MUCH better financially since we moved here 2 1/2 years ago. We have many parks, the state park beach, lots of hiking trials, the bike path a great senior center in a senior friendly community with many senior services. This was the right move for us....

My parents raised 12 kids in a huge 5 bedroom colonial home. Even when my mother could no longer climb the stairs, still they stayed put. The 30+ years of deferred maintenance made it a money pit for any serious buyer so the estate took a huge loss. Mom kept the house for visits, but we stayed at a siblings’ home, not theirs.

I've had so many great experiences and met so many interesting people and seen many things. I don't have to worry about "things at home" since home is where I'm at. I don't have a storage unit full of stuff waiting for me nor a car to worry about. Footloose and loving it. I visit family/friends when I want and they are happy to host. This is very true, but when my parents were alive, no matter where we lived, we always went back to my parent's home for all holidays and occasions. Sometimes, we only got to see anyone when they came over to my parents house. When my parents passed away (which it has been several years now), everybody scattered to the four corners of the earth and have not been seen since. It truly was the glue that kept us together, but at the time we didn't know it, until reality struck. Now, we only get emails, skypes, and/or an occasional call, but not one visit and that was before the pandemic. Thus, there are many views on this subject and everyone is different. And in 12 years renting my apartment I have thrown down the drain over $200,000 to help my landlord pay off his mortgage.
@bonghungk75443 жыл бұрын
@@hipmoma you’re being honest. I’m speaking from my own experiences with people who live in apartments often times they’ll only sing the virtues of living in apartments and deny anything negative you say about it. However if you spend long enough time with them in their apartments and you don’t value their friendship you can point out the negatives like the noisy neighbors or smelly cooking or bumping into nosy neighbors to them.

I rather have my own house. If I need to down size I’d live in a smaller home either owning it or renting it. I’m not into forced superficial conversations or small talk living in apartments running into neighbours when I step out of my flat. I’ve noticed those lift buttons I hope they clean them regularly especially with this corona virus going around same applies for the common front door entrances. I enjoy mainly having no one above me or below me or next to me. It’s my home 🏡 literally.
@ThisIsOurRetirement3 жыл бұрын
They do clean the elevators regularly during the day, we use an object to press the buttons and have hand covering for doors. Not everyone engages in small talk. We can travel in winter with no worries about sump pumps or furnace failures. We don’t need someone coming into your house every 24 to 48 hours in winter checking for damage (Insurance policy). Living in an apartment during the pandemic has made us more aware of personal protection. PST is on the weirdest things too many to generalize. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@bonghungk75443 жыл бұрын
I couldn’t agree with you more. Even if they cleaned the front doors and elevator buttons it’s still not foolproof. I can see what you’re driving at I don’t like passing by neighbors without a forced greeting even if I don’t feel like doing so and if I don’t say hi I feel guilty or like an eel.

Gosh, you keep revealing things that I have discovered myself, and have had to face up to!...The kids got tired of coming to us every year for the holidays...And they want us to come to their homes instead. And I was badly isolated BEFORE Covid hit, and nearly lost my mind during the distancing required by that epidemic. We, in particular, still have our home outside of nearby towns. It was a good place to raise our children. But they are gone and no one drops by. Ugh.

You two are so cute. Fellow Ontarian here, preparing to retire in 2 years. Love the idea of selling our home for the nest egg to invest but we are not ready for apartment life as we enjoy the yard and gardening too much. And of course now the rental prices are so much higher than just a few years ago. We are in a ranch style home and it’s hard to downsize much from that unless we look to a province with less expensive housing prices so we can bank the difference. So many things to consider. Stay well, cheers

This was really valuable, even for someone like me. I’m in my late 40’s, our kids are young teenagers, and we sold our house two years ago and moved to Spain- for what was supposed to be a one year experience. Then Covid hit, and we are in a far better position here in Spain than in Toronto. Our kids are have been in school full time since September, we have nice weather, and can still sit at an outdoor patio for coffee or lunch, next to the sea. That said, I did (and do) struggle with selling our family home sometimes on a heart level. That idea of having a home base that will always be there for the kids after they are out of the house. However, we are giving them so many memories and experiences now that they will never forget! When we get back to Toronto we will get a townhouse that will do us for the next decade, and then on to the next adventure. Sometimes we get so caught up in what “should” be, that we miss out on wonderful opportunities!

Selling the house seems to be a big roadblock for many. I think a lot of people forget that a house is just a place. You'll still have all the good memories that go with the place even if you're living somewhere else. I know for myself and my husband, we won't be able to afford to keep our house, as it's too big for us, and the upkeep money will start to be too much. Better sell it, and downsize without the worry of "what if". Happy I found your channel, as I believe we live in the same area of the province, (kind of), and your cost of living is very relatable.

Hi Tina and Norm. As a newer viewer of your videos, I’m catching up on some of your older ones. This video has inspired me to get rid of more stuff in the new year of 2023. Was looking around our basement storage room after taking down the Christmas tree and Ugh! So much stuff! We have a paid for townhome as retirees (in our 50’s/60’s) with low monthly association fee ( takes care of the yard and snow removal ). We are responsible for interior/exterior maintenance. We have extra savings for upkeep and have updated our home from top to bottom more recently which should set us up for the coming years. We’re in this house for the long haul as it is not too big and we have walkability to a grocery store, a park, a shopping plaza and restaurants. In the US we see so many of our friends, siblings and other family buying their biggest house yet in their early 60’s. Can’t understand it, especially approaching the senior years. Seems to be such a status symbol in America to show off wealth with a huge house. I agree with your advice on downsizing. Cheers!🎉

Definitely sell the house! I used to trade in antique furniture and would make daily house calls to buy, one thing I noticed was a lot of seniors who seemed trapped by their big houses full of possessions. How stressful to be in your later years dealing with these bulky accumulations of your lifetime. From this I learned that I’d want to be lean early; I bought my first home at 50 and I have a firm intention of retiring at 60 and living within a smaller footprint. I know divestment can take an extraordinary effort to extract the value of my possessions so I’ve started my clearance in earnest this year.. a full 6 years out from my retirement. It’s been so liberating selling off items that have sat forlorn in the basement for years unused and turning the proceeds into a dividend stock portfolio (which will look very good by 60) I’d like to request a video: HOW TO DOWNSIZE YOUR LIFE PRE RETIREMENT Ideas can be a boon to some of your viewers: avenues to sell, charity gifting, divestment to family etc. Better sooner to enjoy the minimalist benefit and the financial proceeds then to wait until health, energy levels or personal crisis forces your hand and brings the stressful and sad inevitable liquidation of cherished possessions. I’ve seen it countless time. . Cheers.

We are really enjoying your videos and are 100% with you! My wife and I are in our late 50s and realized a few years ago that time goes so fast and you only live once. We went to Portugal a few times and love it as much as you do, so we travelled back last September thinking we would retire there this year but while I was there I suffered a grand mal seizure and was rushed to the hospital (in Porto). I soon realized I needed to retire earlier so took the leap. Thankfully, my wife works virtually so, in the meantime we have moved from Toronto to Moncton after purchasing a mini home virtually (while in Portugal!!). We realized a long time ago that we couldn’t retire paying high rent in a tiny condo, especially during COVID-19. Now we are looking into retiring to Ecuador and have booked a month trip to Cuenca to to do our research. Thankfully the visa requirements there are much less restrictive and the cost of living is so affordable. It looks like the spot you chose for your trailer is beautiful and I’m sure you will enjoy the time there. We actually considered being full time RVers and purchased one a few years ago, rented a spot at a park near Cobourg and spent a few summers there. For many reasons, we sold it. We are just enjoying our new mini home and waiting to go to Ecuador and decide where to go from there. We will keep you posted and we will keep watching your wonderful and informative videos!

I would like to understand how you rent Longterm and have stability as in Australia, our leases for renting are not usually longer than 1-2 years. The rent is increased annually or at each lease renewal. If the owner wants to sell, you quite often have to vacate at lease expiry. Canada sounds like it has different tenancy rules? Love your videos!! Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

Hi Tanya, The first thing we recommend is to rent from a corporation, the company we rent from has nearly a 100 apartment buildings. They have superintendents resident in each building plus a building manager overseeing a city. We get a 12 month lease and then it is month to month.There is a rent increase each year that is governed by the Provincial government "rent control" the increase is between 1.5 to 2% per year. You can stay in your apartment as long as you continue paying the rent. Hope that helps explain our situation in Ontario, Canada.

Moving to a 'rental model' makes a lot of sense in retirement. Many people, house rich and cash poor, can now liquify those hard walls into cold cash. Invest that money, then live off principle and earnings...it will also make asset transfers to heirs much easier in the future.

Ok, so of course I had to google beaver tail...sounds delish! As I mentioned before, we sold our enormous 4 bedroom house in 2019 and downsized buying a modest bungalow. Family and friends thought we were crazy as we are in late 40/ early 50 range. I think they thought we had money problems to be honest! They said we were far too young to downsize then. But to us, it made a lot of sense. Renting apartments similar to what you have in Canada is not really a "thing" here in Scotland. There might be apartment blocks like that in cities but they would be really expensive. I think what you have done with trailers etc is a smart move. The best of both! We have had a dreadful week here in UK with all the Royal Family drama and the murder of a young woman in London by a policeman. Life is just really tough just now. But today we spent 4hours with my husbands parents who we havent seen in 13 months. It was very emotional but also just lovely! I'm curious to know how things are in Canada with Covid? Our 11 year old daughter goes back to school on Mon. She hadn't been in the company of any children since b4 Xmas!!! Thank goodness for Facetime! Have you had your vaccine yet? We are all just so ready to get a little bit of out lives back!! Stay safe xx

Hi Deborah we think your bungalow sounds lovely we had a bungalow that we sold before we came here and rented. It's great that you've found a retirement lifestyle that suits you but of course people are different, what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another. We have been retired for the last 6 years and our plan is to stay in our house for quite a while yet, we are at 33 years and counting. We have no qualms about apartment living but our house is long since paid for, we've renovated it over the years to our specific tastes, plus my wife loves to garden and she's created some impressive gardens on our property over the decades. Both of our 2 daughters and our grandchildren live about 5km from our house so they are close by, and yes, their places are the hubs for family events. At 1,200 sq ft with a bit finished in the basement our house isn't particularly big and we find it quite manageable, at least so far. Actually in retirement we now have a second house, a condo townhouse in Mexico where we winter (in fact we are in Mexico now) so I guess, for better or worse, we own even more property than we did before!

Wonderful story thanks for sharing , everyone is different life would not be interesting if we all did the same LOL 😂 We are just sharing what works for us and we have also been going to Portugal 🇵🇹 in the winter months , but sadly not this year with all the travel restrictions so quite envious of you in Mexico 🇲🇽. Have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🍺🍷🌺

Interesting perspective on retirement housing. I have already sold the big house but am now in the fees increasing townhouse. I am going to look into maybe taking the next step and moving into an apartment. Thanks for sharing your insight.

I agree. Grown up kids don’t come back home for the holidays. They don’t even invite us to their home for the holidays. Our home and lot is big. Our son and daughter in law bring their young boys over to play in our house and yard because they live in a condo and the complex has one playground that older kids play in. So we keep our home for now, but in a few years, I hope my son soon has a home and yard of his own. Then we can sell. Our daughter and son in law have purchased a nice home with a big yard. So they will have plenty of space when they have children. We are downsizing our possessions now.

The wife is 70 plus, and I am 69 years old. We have lived in our home for 22 years now, and we are very comfortable with our 2800 sq.ft. on one acre of land big enough for us; plans of selling, no way. Our home is special especially for me because the address is my birthday month and year - 1151 Freedom. The property is somewhat private minimal street sounds from car’s and being it is almost summer, the green stuff is coming out here in Wasilla, Alaska.

Because we wanted to travel selling released us from ownership problems one being having someone come in to your house every 24 hours to keep your insurance valid . We love our apartment and have never looked back , also selling it gave the chance for another family to enjoy bringing up their family .Cheers 🍷🌺🍺

Thank you so much for your advice. This was very helpful. I’ve been thinking of downsizing when I retire even though some say I should keep my home because I have a good sized yard in a very desirable area. But, I think, I can sell it, and then someone else can take care of this massive yard, and I can live off the equity and move to a very nice apartment. Anyway, I think that’s what I’m going to do. Thanks again!

We would love you to stop in for a cup of tea! But yes.... we have cleared out homes of our parents.... and so yes, we need to get motivated to start seriously clearing out much of our accumulated stuff. Great memories of your grandmother and the caravan, ~ Brad and Diana

Hi Brad and Diana yes decluttering and downsizing are big but necessary steps we feel to have a great retirement. Our weather is getting better and the snow is melting away so Spring is on its way 🌸 have a great weekend and TFW Cheers 🍺🍷🌺

I agree with you, but with some sadness. I live in the mountains in the woods. I have 4 sloped acres on a beautiful creek. It's very private and isolated and very beautiful. I used to work from home, but am now retired and miss the connections with co-workers and clients. This is not a neighborhood or community setting. My home and property are very labor intensive, and I still struggle to find folks who want to do work for me, so I often end up doing a lot myself. But I'm weary of being alone and doing so much maintenance alone. So I'm looking at where I want to land, I'm leaning towards a subsidized apartment. My thinking on rent is this: I believe while were in the acquisitional/building wealth stage of life it is important to invest in owning a home. But now that I have a dependable income, and plan to live within that living a frugal life in a place that offers social opportunities and ease is valuable for me. A move such as this will be a huge change for me, but it feels like time. Thanks for your thoughts.

@@davisholman6518 It is beautiful. On my rafter inside it says" Just another day in paradise!" I'm also about 5 hours from some beautiful ocean beaches too! Before I retired I worked with elderly folks as a court appointed Guardian Representative. I saw too many folks determined to stay in their "homeplace" come Hell or highwater, well beyond the time it was safe and healthy for them. So I'm going to learn from that and not be here alone and isolated trying to manage 4 very sloping acres and a home and end up injuring myself. I'll stay until the "Universe" sends me a clear message on where my next adventure will be. It's Spring here now, (waiting to see my first bears of the season) and I was ruminating that it will be sad when it's time to move, but life does change and I wish to change along with it with grace and ease. I do admit having a mate would make it happier and easier. But.....
