Very much agree about not using Eurail passes. In the past (30 years ago) they were economical and very usable. But now, there are so many restrictions, routes not included or limited, extra service fees, reservation fees, etc. that they simply are not worth it. I wish they were still a viable solution because they were great at one time, but not now.

They are packed with much useful info. Your mention of weather and environment struck home. I recently decided not to return to Chiang Mai, Thailand, ending my 20 year winter travel, due to unhealthy air starting in December due to farmers burning their fields.

good stuff. I am not that brave enough to do long ( months) overseas. This years goal is to be out for at least 2 month, driving/ camping across the USA. But from 25 on at least 1 overseas trip, primarily Europe. Not the biggest budget, so will be looking at cheapest everything, just to see more. I am a solo traveler, so my cost per person is higher per person and a bit introverted, so I need to push myself out of comfort zone. Again great info

How do you deal with car and car insurance in the US? Do you keep a car and keep insurance throughout the year? I heard years ago that if you suspend car insurance, the next time you decide to get a car and insure it, insurers treat you like a new, inexperienced driver and the rate reflects it as well.

Great video with lots of useful tips, especially the one on registering on safe travelers. If you do not already have a video planned on staying safe while travelling, might I suggest that? I think your viewers would love to hear what other precautions you do take, especially in some of the more exotic or volatile regions you visit.
@spicybrown759 ай бұрын
Yeah good question...like when visiting the US, how does one stay safe.
@plscholl63049 ай бұрын
@@spicybrown75 I never claimed the US was safe. In fact, in all of my travels, I have only felt unsafe twice. Once was in Puerto Rico and the other was in New York. My suggestion is more about precautions one should take when you are unfamiliar with a place or it is known to be a little sketchy. I know when I am somewhere like Rome, I take certain precautions against pick pockets that I would not take in my small hometown. I think this would make those leery of travel feel a little more secure and maybe encourage them to venture outside their comfort zone. The aim is to educate -- not scare.
@spicybrown759 ай бұрын
@@plscholl6304 I understand. But there's this preconceived notion US Americans have that people in other parts of the world specifically Asian and African nations are unsafe. What people do not realize that other countries also put out warning for traveling to the US destinations. Lol.
@RetirementTravelers9 ай бұрын

Good morning from Florida !!! Always good to see your posts. It is either entertaining and interesting or informative and inspiring or all of the above… Thank you again for sharing. Just out of curiosity, whenever you are back here in the states, have you ever considered cruising all the Hawaiian islands ? There’s a cruise ship by Norwegian called Pride of America that cruises the Hawaiian Islands… or perhaps to visit Alaska and go sledding? Maybe even to go to the state of Washington to see (and show the world), the Christmas town of Leavenworth (where it is Christmas all year round)… Anyway, those are just thoughts and suggestions, whenever you are back in the US… Enjoy your travels… Happy tripping…and always praying for your safe travels… Thanks again for sharing.

Fabulous content guys. ❤️ One thing that has always eluded me is the SIM card issue. I’m from Canada and our cellphone costs are exorbitant. My provider even tried to charge me a bogus fee for Cuba and they don’t even haveany reciprocal service there! How do you manage airline carry on restrictions? Unless you've changed I believe you travel with one backpack each. We are also nomads and after spending about 3 years traveling around the US and Canada, are doing Europe and Asia beginning this year and more going forward. We see 7kg and 10kg carry on limits and even a 2kg personal item limit on TAP airline. We would expect you have to often check your backpacks. Do you? Any tips? You may already have a video on this but I'm not sure as you have numerous EXCELLENT videos which we really enjoy and appreciate! Thanks!
@RetirementTravelers9 ай бұрын
With all of camera and electronics gear, we just can't make the 7kg limit. In those situations, we just check. We use Apple tags to track and we try to never schedule connecting flights when we have to check. Safe travels, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
@TravelingToday-yu9gv9 ай бұрын
@@RetirementTravelers Are you still traveling with just one bag each? Are you checking your camera and electronics gear in regular backpacks? (I assume the camera and electronic pieces will be in their own protective cases, right?) Good choice on the connecting flights. The top reason bags get mishandled is connecting flights, especially between different carriers as they usually have different bag tracking systems. Thanks!

Is there a good site that catalogs festivals and events worldwide? In part to see them, but also to avoid some (like the one in India where they throw colored powder on you, the one in Thailand where they throw water on you).

There are a number of blogs that highlight festivals around the world. BTW, we went to the Cambodian New Year celebration last April and had the time of our lives. Yes, everybody shoots water on each other, but it was SO MUCH FUN. We would love to go back. Safe travels, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/

Question for you! My girlfriend and I are getting ready to retire and start traveling year round. But I have aged parents, and I'm an only child. They are in their 80's and I am conflicted over being out of the country so much when they might need me. Do either of you have living elderly parents and how do you deal with being gone so much and what are your thoughts on the issue?
@Laura-kb5sr9 ай бұрын
That's rough. I have parents the same age, and I used to be a home health physical therapist...so I relate from both sides. I think so much depends on them, your relationship with them, whether there's any other relative or support system around, and how closely intertwined your lives are right now (if you live in the same place and see each other weekly vs you're in different places). If you live across the country, it might not change much, especially if you have substantial visits while traveling (e.g., summer and winter); but if you live in the same town and bring them groceries and fill pillboxes weekly, that's a big change. Also depends on the parents--"I always wanted to travel but never got to, so do it for me" vs "Honestly, I feel alone and scared" vs a mixture. Also depends on your girlfriend and relationship with her, plus between her and your parents, and how both your health situations feel right now (though none of us really knows what's around the corner). Could you plan just the first year (downsize but rent out rather than sell a home if you own it)? Then see how it goes? Might be more realistic anyway, and also more palatable all around. My husband and I are not yet truly retired, and aren't ready, but we've arranged things so we can travel for about a month at a time once or twice a year, plus a shorter trip with our adult kids...it feels like life is short, so we should seize some opportunity now. Travel has been with the understanding that if something happens with my parents, we fly home; and our nephew is living with my parents right now so could hopefully make things work short-term. Also, while traveling, we can stay in close communication fine. But my parents live in the same town as us, and there will likely be an era when they need a lot more hands-on help or physical presence to make things work (advocate for them during hospital stays, help arrange things if they need help at home, etc.)--from working in healthcare, I know how key this is. The hard thing is that none of us know when that era will be, or how long it will last. Honestly, right now I see my parents fairly often making questionable judgment calls they didn't used to--but in a lot of cases, I can't really help because they don't want me to. So then we might as well be far??? But maybe that's a cop-out. My husband left his country of origin with his parents' encouragement; and now they have other in-person supports there and are thrilled to hear every detail of our travels; and my husband also has a brother who's more involved. Another reality is that both our sets of parents might be doing better while both parents are alive than once one passes away and the other is grieving and overwhelmed. And this era (of at least one parent being alive) could go on for a really long time, and who knows how our own health will be at that point. So I don't know, except that I sympathize. I think it's really valid and important to want to support our parents when they're vulnerable, and as a society I don't think we do this very well. Yet is there some way to kind of have it all, or as much as possible? Travel but stay in close contact when you're away--really prioritizing the relationship--and spend quality time together when you're back? If your lives are intertwined right now--put other systems in place to help with practicalities and the first day of any potential health crisis? Scratch your biggest travel itches first, just in case? Travel to more remote locations when they're apparently doing well but be closer/within reach of a major airport if there's any question? Plan in advance that if needed, you and your girlfriend head back--or that you temporarily head back while she stays and takes a class on a topic she likes and you don't? Sorry this is so long. It's definitely been on my mind as well. Best wishes, and congrats in advance!!

That's a great question and yes it is on our minds a lot. Only both of our moms are still living. We are currently going back for 2 long visits each year and will likely extend those this year. Fortunately, we both have siblings living in the same town as our moms and we are so appreciative for all they do. John's mom is in an assisted-living facility, which also helps. This is a tough issue for sure. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/

Hi, I like your videos. I liked the one about finding discount airfare. John, I also am on blood thinners for blood clots. I have had 2 removed, one in November of 2021 and another almost a year later. Was the timing of yours similar? If so, I watched a video recently of a doctor saying that in his opinion , that Covid caused the clots even without knowing you had it. I only had Covid symptoms once, and that was in '22, I think during the second wave. I tested positive but had no major issues. I was in bed 1 day and that was all.

How was learning to drive on the left side of the road?

My experience-have done the transition multiple times - is that it takes about 4-5 hours of driving to get completely comfortable. I tend to overcorrect to left side of road and hit the shoulder on the first day. After that piece of cake.

Hello John & Bev, I wasn't sure which vlog to post to, but here goes. I am a faithful follower now. I watched you video about your transatlantic trip coming back to the US. My mom took that trip many years ago with a friend of hers. We, my wife and I are looking to retire in just under 2 years. I found you looking for retirement videos. I like your format, many of the others are all the same thing, either you can't afford it or how much you need... You seem to just be straight forward and easy going and sort of like the RV videos I have watched, just do it. So, here is my question. We were planning a big trip to Europe this May, but I had a medical issue and we have to post pone it. I was wondering who you use for your cell service? I was looking at orange, they seem to have a good deal and offer a lot of GB. Do you have two plans, one for each phone? My daughter is currently living in Spain and they have a different company they use. I have watched several of your videos and I have not see you discuss your cell service, I may not have watched the right video yet. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Oh my gosh, I could just keep rambling, but I will stop here. I look forward to following you adventures and perhaps crossing your path on our travels. Marc

Happy valentine day ❤❤ I have a question. I want to go on an extended trip and I am wondering about onward travel. If I get a one way ticket someone because I want to remain flexible about where and when I head to and out next, can I just land somewhere? Are they going to want to see an onward ticket? Have you done a video on this? I am having trouble getting decent information on this. What do you guys do?
@RetirementTravelers9 ай бұрын
The only time we ever had to show proof was in Costa Rica two years ago. We typically do have a exiting ticket book (because we plan out 6-12 months), but are rarely ever asked for it. They may ask you how long you plan to stay in country x, but that's about it. Are you talking about entering the Schengen zone or elsewhere? Happy journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
