Hi Norm and Tina , great advice as usual ! I'm retiring in 3 1/2 years and you're such a valuable source of information . I feel really fortunate to live in the Niagara Region as there's so many beautiful places to go hiking/ walking . I live in a tiny apartment but my walkout patio has been a godsend . I can garden on a small scale which brings me a lot of enjoyment . I've decluttered twice and plan on a third time . I contacted an Auction place , they'll come and give you an estimate and all you have to do is put your small things in boxes ( liquor store boxes are perfect ) . They come and pick up your things and hand you a check . You don't get what you paid for things but so worth not having to haul it away yourself . I've become very selective about what I bring home ! You're never boring , I appreciate the relaxed and respectful way you have with each other and us . ❤

We used the Auction house when my parents downsized as well, and loved that individuals who bought their items came & carried away their surplus items. Freeing us from having to have lawn sales or getting a storage unit. What a relief, all around.

Hello Tina and Norm, 35 years ago, I am 61 years old, my parents retired early to a retirement community in Florida near the gulf, and I fell in love ❤ with it. I told anyone who would listen that I was going to retire there. It’s been my goal ever since. I discovered your channel about six months ago around December of 2022, and I gobble up all your content. I enjoy them so. They are encouraging me to keep my eyes on the prize of retirement. I really don’t like my job but it pays ok and has a pension benefit so I can’t realistically change. It wouldn’t be financially smart. The tips on this video are all spot on. Keep making content for us viewers! Sincere thanks, Elizabeth (Seal)

Good advice ... I've been doing the same things during my 4 years of retirement (which started at 55!!). And, like you, I decluttered, starting a year before I retired, but still have too much. My emergency fund is 1 full year of expenses rather than 3 months and live directly off of my monthly dividends. By moving out of Toronto, my vehicle insurance is now 40% and home insurance 20% less than what I used to pay. Cheers, Steve

Thank you Stephen you are doing a lot of things to ensure a good retirement, congratulations. These small savings can make a big difference over time. We live on our Government pensions, CPP and OAS. If you can govern your income to a lower amount GIS is available as Canada does not means test for it. Ethical or not that’s a personal decision but we do pay a lot of taxes in Canada.

Really solid advice and being a retired person myself I have already done many of the things you've recommended. I do invest, we actually went down to one car immediately and we both have interests that keep us busy. We really aren't within walking distance of shops, restaurants and such but we do go for walks daily around the neighborhood. Still since retiring we put less than 7000 miles a year on our car and have an insurance plan that reflects that.

Hi guys! Recently discovered you! A fellow Canuck here (originally from N. Ireland) You’ve been great help! I retired 7 yrs ago. I’m in London Ont. and have remained here as it has the most of our family members in one spot. I’ve already done many, many of the same things that you two have applied and recommended. Your “core idea” of renting I will soon apply to a move to BC’s beautiful Okanagan Valley. We will combine assets with a daughter and son-in-law currently in Vancouver. This “new world” will allow our daughter, a BC Hydro Exec. to work from home. Eventually a 1/2 acre property with a coach house or granny cottage for us old folks will be purchased. We can shop above our “weight class”! Cheers

Hi guys my wife and I have been watching your videos for a while mostly good tips. In regards to selling the second car we keep two cars but only insure one at a time. With a salted roads Canada we have a winter and a summer vehicle. As I do all of my own maintenance on the vehicles and have a lift in my garage it’s a hobby And a benefit. My wife and I planed for our retirement five years ago we replaced the roof the furnace the air-conditioning remodelled the bathrooms and the downstairs of our home. As our property taxes around $500 and utilities around $250 it’s cheaper for us to remain in our home then sell. We agree when you say locate close to your grocery store liquor store beer store restaurants coffee shops and theatres including a library and a number of medical facilities along with 23 KLM of walking trails all within a one block walking distance of our home. It’s really important as you move into your 60s but you don’t rely on working to your 70s employers really don’t like employees over 65 in their teams. We developed passive income in pensions from employment both in the US and Canada. Your message is really important for people in their 40s and 50s . You can remain in your own home if you control the property tax and you’re spending. Thanks for the tips Rod and Cindy.

I pretty well follow your tips now. I'm 58 and about two years from calling it quits. My TFSA is maxed out with passive income ETF's and a good REIT. I have a provincial government pension and RRSP. I live in PEI and have been mortgage free since 1999. I have a small beautiful log home on the North Shore and heat with wood and I'm partially off grid. Two greenhouses and fifteen raised beds. I drive a 2008 Rav4 and work from home. I got rid of the Satellite TV in 2006 and have and HD Antenna for my three channels, CBC, CTV and Global. Amazon Prime rounds out my entertainment, as well as many books. I walk about 8k a day. They just put FibreOp out here in January and like you, I went with the lowest speed package (100 meg). I pressure can much of my food for winter and store root crops in my back cold room. Life is good. Great video and I'm a new subscriber

Hi again !! - sitting here nodding in agreement ESPECIALLY when you said declutter!! Oh boy, we did a huge move from Alaska to Missouri 15 years ago, we held garage sales for a few weekends, sold loads of stuff (as you do lol) and by the time we left we were quite proud of ourselves. We hired a company to bring the stuff we “needed” which took a month and we realized we didn’t need that either, in fact we didn’t open several boxes for weeks !! So yes I could not agree more - when you think you’ve decluttered enough, do it again !! Thanks you two again for cheering up a dull day and your common sense. Ps- may be moving back to Alaska in next few years - miss it terribly and these horrendous humid Midwest summers are AWFUL!!

Like you, we have let go of items by selling or giving away or giving things to our three kids or to friends. All of our kids are married or about to be and have their own homes all within 30-45 min away. There are no grandchildren yet. During COVID I sold over $3,000 of stuff by FB marketplace. We cut cable 10 yrs ago and use rabbit ears and Netflix only. We do have internet service and older iPhones. Now we are reconsidering what to do about replacing them? Like you, we have travelled to many parts of the world for about 10 yrs. COVID shut that down, but we still go by van all over in our beautiful state of Michigan and the Midwest. We have some free air flights available to us and several companion tickets we can use in the next year, and only wish we could find a rental car when we arrived! Any thoughts on this? We are very easy going and love to pack up and go.

If I Have a cheat day for food it will be just for a taste on holidays -- I was was giving myself too many excuses previously, plus stress was a contributing factor which impacted my intake of food in addition to it's toll on the body. The excellent staff at the local hospital in Fergus and the cardiac unit at St Mary's in Kitchener literally saved my life. The doctor told me there are two types of patients, those that drive themselves to Emergency and those that don't, fortunately my route was on slow enough streets in a small town that made it less dangerous

Norm and Tina, just love your videos. Your suggestions are sensible and helpful. Just wanted to share that an annual new year tradition for my husband and I is the “fireside chat” about what, if any, costs can we reduce or eliminate. In the run-up to retirement, over the past 8 years or so I’ve been keeping an excel spreadsheet of all our income and expenses … it sounds tedious but only takes a few minutes each week and it’s been really, really helpful in terms of planning. You can easily see where the money goes for home ownership/maintenance costs, vehicle, insurance, groceries, gifts etc. It has also helped our financial planner as we are working with concrete numbers. I’m retired now (just > a year) and hubby has a couple more years to work. I’ve continued with the spreadsheet and it’s a great tool which we’re now using for our analysis about next steps when we’re into full on retirement. Planning can be fun!!

I think finding a volunteer opportunity is important too BUT make sure it is something you really want to do. I was asked to serve on various Boards and I did for awhile but I hate meetings so why was I doing that?! I volunteered with the theatre but I really found my niche volunteering at the hospital. (Sadly not during the pandemic however) My point is, don’t feel obligated or pressured or afraid to quit. Volunteer doing something you love!

Totally enjoy your videos. I've been retired for 9 months now. Love it. I've decluttered, but have more to do. I've lost weight and feel healthy and fit. Great advice. Just an FYI on how much speed you really need for your internet usage. I have a 15 Mbps DSL connection and I am able to stream Netflix videos or KZbin with no problems. So that is a tenth of the speed mentioned in the video. I have been retired for over 10 years and I watch these videos for confirmation of what my wife and I do. Thanks for the videos, I really enjoy them.
@ThisIsOurRetirement3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your support, we had 6Mbps DSL at our house in the country and compared to dial up it was rocket speed lol. We should have clarified that we went down from 1GB to 150 Mbps because we upload video content to YT and to commercial video libraries and we need the upload speed. We are grateful to have you as a viewer thank you.

Hello Tina and Norm. I'm 55 and starting to think about retirement planning. You're video tips are thought provoking and great conversation starters. Thank you for being so open and honest about your experiences. I am also a UK expat. I now live in Oz with hubby and older kids. Since Covid I have started getting homesick. Miss family and friends more. Do you ever get homesick for Blighty ?
@ThisIsOurRetirement2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle, Thanks for watching our video, it’s strange the homesick thing, we think human nature is always looking at what we don’t have. Being in Australia and us in Canada would have a lot of Brits thinking we have hit the jackpot in terms of lifestyle and weather. Having said that we do feel sometimes as if we don’t fully belong in Canada, we missed out on growing up here and being knowledgeable about popular culture like old T.V. shows, how things were in the sixties etc. We do like our British food items that you can only get there and being in Britain we have that inbuilt knowing how things are done. Being in the UK is like wearing old comfortable slippers as opposed to Canada where the shoes fit a bit tight lol. We don’t have any family left in the UK, having said that we have just applied to renew our expired UK passports and plan on maybe living there a few months each year and using it as a base to travel to Europe quickly and cheaply. Take care.

We retired about three years ago and done most of the things you mentioned, the one major thing we did before retiring, was make a budget, this is huge, we went to on car, cut cable and went with internet and Roku. We kept our house because there are no suitable apartments where we live and our children and grandchildren are local, so moving is not an option for us. Thanks again for a great informative video.

Enjoyed this video while sitting in my Lazy Boy eating great sushi from Costco. Our portfolio increased by 40 to 50 percent during the pandemic being invested in Apple/Microsoft/Pfizer along with banks. Much better than cash investing for us…at least so far. Was able to replace numerous items around the house without effecting any principle. Included purchasing a state of the art audio system. One of my questions I guess for Norm would be do you have cement floors, can you hear the neighbour’s? I listen to music at low to medium volume a couple of hours a day but wondering how sound proof the apartment might be. Great tips! Stay safe.
@ThisIsOurRetirement3 жыл бұрын
It has been a great period for investing, we have bought quite a few items during the pandemic and have grown our net worth. Congratulations on your success. Each apartment construction is a 100% concrete box cube, mainly for fire resistance. Sound wise we don’t here other T.V or music from neighbouring apartments, we do hear if someone drops a heavy item or the odd maintenance being done as concrete can conduct construction sound. Thanks for watching and for your comment.

We are also retired just over 6 years. Both our daughters (and grandchildren) are in the same, and not inexpensive, town we have lived in for the last 34 years and both live about 5km away. I am afraid we aren't moving anywhere. C'est la vie. We did sell our 2nd car after the first year of retirement - as you say you really don't need it. We have tried the streaming everything but when you stream network TV you have to watch ALL the commercials, there's no getting away from it, whereas if we record TV on the DVR we can fast forward through the commercials. Keeping our cable may cost us a bit of money but for us it's worth it. I do agree with keeping 2-3 years of expenses in cash so you don't have to sell investments during the inevitable market downturns. It sure brings peace of mind knowing that no matter what you have the cash and can ride out even big market corrections.
