In this Video, I'm working with my dog, Sasha, on perfecting her retrieve into a heel position! After she retrieves, we're rewarding with a "strike" - where she drops behind me for her reward. We started adding distractions using food and toys, but our first attempt was too challenging. I adjusted by simplifying the setup, using just one piece of food and two toys instead of a large spread of food. Sasha successfully navigated through, and we'll continue to increase distractions as we progress.
Once Sasha masters the retrieve indoors, we'll take it outside to test her skills in a more challenging environment.
Here's a simple four-step outline for teaching your dog to retrieve:
Step 1: Teach the Hold
•1: Shape the behavior with a clicker- click when the dog touches the object with their nose. (see nose touch video)
•2: Hold the marker word and wait for the dog to open their mouth
•3: work up to a 10-sec hold
Step 2: Build the Fetch
•1: Play the Toy- Switch game (see Video)
•2: Instead of switching toys, toss the toys close to you
• 3: Create excitement around the object
Step 3: Combine Retrieve and Heel
•: Lure your dog back into position 1- Heel
•2: Feed in Heel often,
•3:Train with the dog returning to heel position vs the 12:00 o'clock "sit" position
Step 4: Add Distractions
• Method 1: Start with mild distractions (e.g., toys or one piece of food)
• Method 2: Gradually increase distraction difficulty
• Method 3: Move the training outdoors
