A great gem from my gold old Mega Drive games, this game had everything, it's as if the creator's stayed up for a week and just watched movies for inspiration and idea's, most major movies from the 80's rolled into one game. All this combines with throthgars/Tyrannicons singing and epic commentary commentary, pure gold!

Figures it would end at the stage with "the jump". I'm not sure if that's the same one I agonized over, but because of the one jump on that stage, the music is forever burned into my memory. It's awesome and frustrating at the same time (awesomely frustrating?). Reminds me of Castlevania 3 when I kept dying on the stage with the flying bone dragon boss at the end (small platform while fighting, one hit means death and having to go through the entire stage again) but the pumping "Aquarius" music just kept me going. And the feeling when you overcome...it's great. Reminiscing like this, I guess it's true that the sense of accomplishment folks laud Dark Souls for (and rightly so) is not something new, but something that the classic games of old had.

On 7-1, I always lost tons of lives on this MASSIVE, IMPOSSIBLE JUMP, and then after losing a load, it would mysteriously become a possible jump!!!!!!!!!!! That always mystified me, but also made me dread 7-1!!!!!!!! ;*(

Older gamers always harp on about the SNES having better music capabilities, but for my money the Megadrive beats it hands down. Stuff like this and Streets of Rage still sound incredible even now.

As one of those older gamers, I'd have to agree that the SNES sound hardware is more versatile to be sure. That part is a simple statement of fact. However, the sort of thrashy sound of the Genesis sound hardware is well suited to this type of music, and in the end, it's the talent of the composer that matters most. A good soundtrack on the SNES isn't going to be better than a good Genesis soundtrack just by virtue of more advanced sound hardware. Same reason that good soundtracks today aren't necessarily better than the good ones of the past. In the case of the music for this game and the Streets of Rage series, we're talking Yuzo Koshiro. Probably a top five all time VGM composer in my opinion (and I have a particular fondness for the Streets of Rage 2 soundtrack, which ranks among my top five favorites of all time). As such, the compositions in this game are awesome. Also, this techno flavored style happens to be his specialty. He did the same with Actraiser on SNES.
