I loved this game back in the day and it was definitely one of my favourite games on the Mega CD

I bought this game pretty much on day 1 back in 1993 for my Sega CD. I was 15 at the time (yeah I'm 45 now). I loved it just as much as MUSHA to be honest. The soundtrack alone is so superb. It was definitely one of the better Sega CD games.

I wish M2 would do more Aleste collections. Their game gear / Master system collection released a year or two ago is actually really well done. A collection with this, MUSHA and Space Megaforce/ Super Aleste would be fantastic...

Great review! Thank you for putting it together!!! I wish I bumped into this game in the wild when Sega CD games were relatively cheap instead of the junk that was so readily available.

I remember as a kid, two friends had the Sega CD, Mad Dog McCree was funny, Sonic CD looked so cool with that animated intro and music, Chuck Rock 2 was also played on CD and I didn't know it was a cartridge game also, and I can't remember much beyond that. Looking back at Sonic CD, I put it even below Sonic 1, 2 and Chaos 8-bit games, it's weird design isn't fun today. Apart from that, it didn't set the world on fire, but 2.24 million units sold, not counting the Laser Active packs is pretty decent for an addon, I'd say. All in all, Nintendo wanted a CD addon and due to circumstances it never materialized for the SNES, sometimes I think Nintendo knew these addons weren't a great idea at that point, but we know this isn't the case, still, they launched great games for the SNES from 1994 to 1997, even DOOM and SFA2. SEGA should have focused on bringing great games to their 16-bit console, not lose money with marketing and complicate things with more hardware, improve developers relationship, specially third parties and forget about stop-gap addons. Instead, from as early as mid 1993, deliver decent development kits all over and facilitate so that with the launching of their true next generation console in 1994, with something around 30 good quality, tailor-made games across all genres, they're fortunes would have been brighter.

Thanks for the great review! This looks like a fun game though I agree it's annoying when enemies spawn from the bottom of the screen without warning in vertical shooters. I chuckled seeing that dialog with the enemy leader complaining he spent all his wealth building the flying platform you just annihilated 😁

To be fair, I'd be pretty upset too if my flying fortress was destroyed by a single person too.

The boss fights, the sprites, the music here are in my opinion even better than Musha. If the game wasnt so darn difficult, especially in the later stages, I think this may absolutely be considered on par, if not better, than his (maybe overly)revered predecessor.

This one doesn’t get much love these days. I think the simple reason is it’s not as good as MUSHA however it’s still a pretty good shooter, best on the Sega CD for sure

I hated when the magazines based reviews off of comparisons to other games. Review the game as it is, not what it isn't.
