I was never too familiar with the arcade version, but I played the hell out of the NES game growing up. NES game was more of a metroidvania, action-RPG and was a ton of fun. The PS2 remake was a Devil May Cry/God of War action game that wasn't bad either. I always remembered the game for the sunset background in the early stages. As a kid it was a striking visual that always stuck with me and I was thrilled when they brought it back for the remake.

Yes! The NES version was weird as hell at times especially those top view stages... NES really pulled out the anything goes games for better or for worse...
