It's my suspicion that the reason Disney de-canonised the expanded universe so that they could cherry-pick and steal ideas from all the writers and artists and programmers etc to pepper their "spreadsheet-dominant, demographic-obsessed and committee-created" films, and not have to pay any royalties. That's why we have Han n Leia having a boy, who trains with Luke and falls to the darkside; or taking a character like Kyle Kattarn, as you said, and repurposing him into a bland cardboard cut out in a film composed of bland, one dimensional characters and constant call backs n references, to tell a story that we already knew from the first SENTENCE of the original opening crawl; and just basically rinse-and-repeating the same tired old story, or telling stories that no one wanted (like, prequels in general are shite. Because they fundamentally lack any tension as we know what the ultimate outcome will be. Han Solo's alive in the OT, 🙂so no worrying there. Chewie? He'll be fine too. Lando as well. All the Rogue one characters : never appeared in the OT, so they obviously all die. And we know that the Rebels succeed with the plans. I don't need to know how Han got his gun. Or how he calls Chewie "Chewie" because it's quicker than saying "Chewbacca". It's tediously mundane and there's simply no stakes or suspense. Creatively bankrupt as Rich Evans says. Christ, what a long, looong rant... X

The amount of Star Wars content wasn't the problem. It was the fact that most of that content was borderline not fun. Probably because it felt like cookie cutter pandering and literal stupid decisions. On the other hand Star Trek or Stargate every week was pretty great back in the day even with overlapping series, and three Marvel movies a year plus the Agents of Shield show was also fun back in the day. The Expanded Universe DID have some weight on the movies. Coruscant and the 501st Legion came from the Thrawn trilogy. Aayla Secura, the blue Twilek Jedi, was originally a comic character. Lucas himself gave the idea of bringing Palpatine back in Dark Empire. So the EU WAS canon, just not as overtly as the movies. And the most questionable stuff was either non canon to begin with or just retconned. Unlike Disney........
