I think my problem with this one is the fact that they clearly attached addon controls to a smartphone screen - and It kinda shows. And to have this "improvised look" to this premium/expensive device hurts the image of the product. Does that make any sense?

I feel like the modular controller was a huge missed opportunity. They should have made both the left and right side modular, and then they could have sold tons of different types of controllers with different controller layouts, some retro. It would have been more customizable and great for nerds like me that would love retro themed controllers. Edit: This would be even more appealing since you have the option for cellular connectivity. It would be a much more appealing phone option if you could fully remove the controls to make it more pocketable.

@@wordsmith451 It all depends on delivery schedules. Loki won't be out before 2023 at all, no shot. GPD will be delivering close to the bulk of Odin shipments and is significantly stronger than any Odin Pro. I don't think it'll be embarrassing to pay 100$ more for a 30-40% stronger chipset - SD870 is miles ahead of SD845. The embarrassing thing is buying a cellphone with attachments and letting GPD convince you its a "retro handheld" when its just not. This thing sucks, but not because price/performance.
@wordsmith451
@wordsmith451 2 жыл бұрын
@@gibiati8295 raw power ain't everything - I'd still take the Odin. I'll put it another way: GPD is starting to go the way of Anbernic - idiot dinosaurs who had their day but have now been made obsolete by a market that has finally broken free from stagnation. These new offerings will not cut it, and I think they'll be a fitting tribute to the end of an era that should have been put to pasture back in 2019. If I'm most worried about mobile performance, I also have a redmagic 6 pro that wipes the floor with the overXPensive+. To your last point, however, that's why I look forward to seeing GPD fail. A second edition of a device that shouldn't exist, and they're so cheap they can't even bother sourcing displays without a camera. Baby's First Android Emulation Project would have been really neat a few years ago. Now they're trying to sell a bucket on wheels as a car when we've all got Teslas. Sure, the new models aren't cheap or issue-free, but it beats cleaning up dung and resaddling the horses every time you want to take the GPD 1920s edition out for a run.

This feels more like a phone with e.g. Gamesir X2 controller than a handheld or even retro handheld. I think the way Ayn goes with the Odin is way more interesting. GPD had some unique thing with the clambshell design of the XD and XD Plus (yeah there is also Powkiddy with their devices, but cmon...), but they decide to go away from their "trademark" design, the same thing Anbernic did with their last devices. Poor decision I think, power is not everything. So the Odin will rock the premium sector of Retro Handhelds, this thing nobody cares allthough it is the strongest device on the market for now...

@@RetroGameCorps Yea the ultra wide handheld isn't the way. I'd rather see a shift back to something like a 16:10 or 3:2 screen for handhelds. The unfolded Display ist nice for Retrosystem, like Snes, Nes or Megadrive, and the screen is also big enough for 16 to 9 content, PSP looks great tbh. You have to see this for yourself. Used your android tutorials for setting things up, works and looks great with this big oled screen in your hands, that you can fold :)

They are two totally different machines. The Win600 is an x86 handheld, so it can run Windows, SteamOS, and Batocera, while the GPD XP+ is Android-based and can only run that OS. They are about the same in terms of performance but it'll really depend on what type of games you want to play on it (PC vs Android), and the battery life on the XP+ is about 6x longer than the Win600.

Been using the original GPD XP and Odin pro for streaming AAA games lately and theres a major difference in Analog sticks any game where you need to aim using the right stick is so much harder on the Odin with the tiny sticks compared with GPD which is far better for aiming, this has made the steam deck still the best option for me( full size analog sticks ) ahead of the Loki and Aya neo air even if some models are going to be more powerful.

@gibiati8295
@gibiati8295 2 жыл бұрын
Not really. Maybe 5% Of DS/3DS games actually require you to look at/use the bottom screen enough to justify you needing it to be the same size. All the glaring flaws of this device doesn't just suddenly get excused when considering DS performance. You still have a massive joystick getting in the way of good gameplay for nearly all games. Screen Toggle more than suffices for 90% of DS games and the rest are mostly ideal with just a half-sized small screen to the side of the big screen. You almost never need matching screens - DS was a mostly 1 screen device with a gimmick attached. Yes the side by side is lovely and neat with no black bars but that alone hardly makes something the best DS experience.

After just receiving my AYN Odin a few weeks back, and having a Steam Deck on pre-order for later this year, this is an easy pass. As stated, you can see how they put in the least amount of work possible by just using the last device, and inserting a new chip set. While I understand that level of thinking, it's not a great idea when the last device was so far from perfect to begin with. The AYN team has already hinted at slapping a newer Snapdragon to the Odin down the line, and that's a great idea, as the Odin is just about perfect as it sits. So another version can bypass most R&D, slap a newer chip in, and their off to the races. They can even upgrade the screens at that point if they want, as 95% of the system already exist. The GPD XP+ could be a solid buy at the discount, depending on a persons current needs, but probably not so much at full retail. As always Russ, thanks for the informative video, as it's always good to know all the ins and outs to a device like this.

Way better screen and better quality buttons (although the landscape format of the Retroid with the stacked shoulders is definitely more comfortable for long sessions). I feel like the speed of the RP2+ kinda went to waste as I personally find 3.5" to just be too small once you get into the systems that need that extra horsepower. I'd probably wait for the Odin for those more demanding titles.

There are definitely ways around it but the whole thing about retro emulation is recreating the original control scheme too, so we can relive those epic childhood memories. And unfortunately in that sense it doesn’t line up well.

Well, the reason why GPD was only modular on the right side is because if you make the other side also modular, they will look like joycons of the Nintendo Switch. That will be a possible Patent Infringement case.

I commend GPD for trying. Sure it’s beats the Odin but they really should have matched the price with the Odin. The steam deck has kinda made things a bit awkward with it’s crazy 400 tag. The question everyone is gonna just ask is oh why not just get a steam deck..

It's an old Galaxy S9 with a Gamesir controller. If they want to compete with the Ayn Odin, they needed to at least make it look and feel like a handheld console. This just looks shoddy and thrown together.

This and the Ayn Odin get a pass for having bottom firing speakers. I like to prop my handhelds on a pillow and play lying in bed, and can't do that if the speakers are firing into the pillow. Front firing speakers are a must for me.

Every time i see someone say "the thumbstick gets in the way of the buttons" i cannot fathom how you guys use or put your hands on these devices. First and foremost, stretching your thumb and fingers that way is not good for your hands. It plain isn't. Second... you don't even need to do that. I would post a photo if i could. Angle out your hand, your thumb will come just right of the stick and your hands will have a much more comfortable position. My hands hurt just watching how you (but many others too) put your fingers on a controller :P Have you really never tried a different way of holding the console/controller?
@skreeog
@skreeog 2 жыл бұрын
I want to try and describe how i would suggest you to hold this thing. Rest your console on your ring fingers, the palm of your hands should mostly be against the sides of the controller, and your thumb free to move without hassle from the thumbstick to the face buttons without any difficulty or overlapping. Index fingers are BELOW the triggers, supporting the console from there and moving on the triggers only when needed. I don't know if you can read this message or if you will actually try... but i am quite sure you will find this far more comfortable.

I'm at the point where it's a 16:9 screen or bust. I've been using a Poco F1 with a Kishi for Moonlight and retro gaming, which is okay in a pinch, but the other day I got a couple of Razer Phones from Ebay and fixed them up. Wow, the 16:9 screen makes all the difference in the world for gaming. I actually don't think I would ever consider a dedicated gaming device with anything else, except the more classic ratios like 4:3 and 3:2. It's absolutely shocking how much of a better experience it is compared to the elongated phone screen. They are kind of interesting, but I feel like the GPD XP line are kind of bad faith devices with obviously poor design choices like the punch camera. Look at all the space on the left side of the device, or the corners of the screen bezels- plenty of space for a camera. But the XP line appears to be pretty obviously built with recycled smartphone parts and weird controls with no real consideration for a good experience and it just gives me a really lazy feeling. Despite the performance being worse, I would go with a dedicated gaming device made from the ground up by someone like AYN who from the very beginning focused on the best possible gaming device.
