Custom firmware is now available for the RG353P, which significantly improves the gameplay in Saturn, Dreamcast, and PSP: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnu1YXisrZh-iZI Correction on the RP2+ shipping note in the video: I've learned that places which are NOT Hawaii sometimes have 4PX as a shipping option, which can reduce shipping costs to as little as $15, not the $30+ I mention in the video. So in those cases the RP2+ is cheaper than this RG353P!
@mfreddy222 жыл бұрын
Yup. $20 for me in Tennessee. This was a great video and review but I don't understand how others compare this to the RP2+. I can play almost my full PSP library and it plays a few gems on GameCube including super strikers and wind waker. I even am halfway through Metroid prime on it although there's definitely some lag. But playable. Also you mentioning that launchbox is basically unusable on the anbernic. That to me is a deal breaker since it works fine on RP2+. Anbernic is getting closer and I do like this thing but they need to beef up the chipset to be a player in this category right now.

I feel you. I was quite a fan of Anbernic for the build quality as well, but with competition ramping up and Anbernic falling behind on hardware, I searched for alternatives. I'm always watching this kind of videos were people analize general aspects of this chinese retro handhelds, I never have been an owner of those, but keeps my attention because i love to play retro games. But, i came from the emulators running on Android phones like S9+ and so on, and the experience is much better in the performance topic. The only thing you need to solve is the controller, but there is a lot of options, and now I think I would be looking for a Kishi controller because of the latency on some games. Great video as usual. I like that Anbernic is going for less blocky designs now, the ergonomics of the 351MP are less than ideal on long sessions. Though I'll pass on this one. With time, switching between a Vita, Miyoo mini, 351MP and GBAs, I've realised that as you said, there isn't a perfect handheld, but the cons get really noticable with time. The 351MP is too heavy and angular, the Miyoo Mini is not fit for games with frequent L/R usage, the GBA's reliance on cartridges is quite outdated now, and the Vita is not as pocketable, though perfect on all other aspects imo. I'd love to see a good $100 quality clamshell handheld, in the size range of the GBA SP. Kinda like a buffed up Powkiddy V90 with Anbernic hardware quality. Until then, we still have quite a lot of good enough consoles, but I find it harder to engage with the new models after knowing and experiencing the issues of the previous ones.

Thanks for the review Russ, comprehensive and enjoyable to watch as ever. For me the RG353 isn't quite hitting the mark. Ok, here is how I truly feel about the RG353P, and I hope Anbernic somehow sees this comment (I think many others would agree with this comment). First off, I always love that shiny Anbernic logo at the bottom of the display, always keep doing that! I think the design and concept of this RG353P by Anbernic should have been made in place of both the RG552 and RG503. The RG353P should have had both a 5 inch and 7 inch version keeping the tall 4:3 aspect ratio display (I prefer the 4:3 ratio displays with extremely thin bezels over the widescreens). The RG353P should have had larger buttons, the same size as an official SNES joypad. Had you done this I would have hopped on that 7 inch version like it was no tomorrow! And lastly, the RG353P should have came in more colors. More color options like, give us metallic versions like that Metallic Mint Green version of your RG351MP, or a solid black, solid white, metallic gray, woodgrain like your RG351V, off white, metallic bronze, or that metallic blue violet gradient you used for your RG280M.

I'm a sucker for the SNES aesthetic so I've been looking forward to reviews for the RG353P (and the Miyoo P60), but unfortunately I don't see a good reason to purchase this over a Retroid Pocket 2+. I think we're at the point now where decent N64, Dreamcast, Saturn, and PSP emulation is a must at the $100+ price point.
@TXFDA2 жыл бұрын
I don't have anything yet. I'm ordering my first emulation handheld next month. So naturally I'm looking around for what to get. My plan was to get a RP2+, but then videos of this started popping up. But honestly, I don't see any major differences that makes me want to spend the extra $40 to get this instead. This has Android 11 and Linux, where as the Retroid has Android 9. The Retroid actually has a better battery. This has L3 and R3 buttons (according to some comments I've seen), the Retroid doesn't (but let's face it, none of the things you're going to be emulating use them anyway). They both seem to run the same level of games. If I bought this instead of the Retroid, it feels like I'd be spending an extra $40 just for the shape of this console. I do quite like the SNES controller aesthetic, and the dpad being above the left stick. But that's not enough reason for me to spend the extra money. So here I am, watching videos and reading comments to see if it's worth buying this instead, or just sticking to my original plan of getting a Retroid Pocket 2+.
@shade20x642 жыл бұрын
@@TXFDA They both have their pros and cons, but in terms of power the RP2+ is the best bang for the buck out there currently. I think what it comes down to is, if you want good Dreamcast, N64, and PSP performance, the RP2+ is the way to go. The ergonomics of the RG353P might be better (I don't have one so I can't say), but I find the RP2+ to be pretty comfortable to use. Also, though the RG353P might have Android 11, the apparent lack of Google Play Store is a big loss and a deal-breaker for me personally.
@TXFDA2 жыл бұрын
@@shade20x64 I've gotten two comments now. The pros and cons seem to be: The Retroid is more powerful and can simply run more things better. The Retroid also has the Play Store that this doesn't (as you said). But the 353p has L3 and R3 buttons (at least, maybe? I've only seen one or two people mention it), and the right stick is actually a proper analog stick as supposed to the slider thing the Retroid has. I think I'd rather go with the RP2+. It's cheaper and does more. The shape of the console, 2 extra buttons, and a better right stick doesn't really outweigh the fact that the Pocket 2+ has better emulation, and is $40 cheaper. Besides, the Retroid has Bluetooth. Nothing stopping me from connecting an Xbox or PS4 controller to it, if it really wanted.

Or Yes two handhelds can connect together wireless/cable with this OS/emulator/frontend but not with this OS/emulator/frontend? Or is multiplay only available if pairing an external controller via bluetooth/usb for the 2nd player? Or if multiplay is available but recommended with two external controllers whilst the handheld is connected to a TV via hdmi. etc... I know RetroidPocket2 has a wifi option to connect together, which is the reason I bought it so me and my partner can play together. Any chance for future reviews to add multiplay options on these handhelds?

Hi, thanks for being a longtime viewer! As far as multiplayer, besides local co-op via a second controller, there is really one option for all of these devices, and that is RetroArch's NetPlay. I did a video on it early last year, so it's been a while and I should follow up on it. In a nutshell, you can play local or internet NetPlay with others on retro 2-player games (like say, Contra). It will only work on systems lower than PS1, and link cable (Pokemon sharing, for example) does not work. Here is my video and guide: retrogamecorps.com/2021/01/12/guide-retroarch-netplay-on-handheld-devices/

Now, I really do like the concept of this device. But, man I really do wish this RG353P was a 5-7 inch device! The PocketGo S30 already had a 3.5 inch display. Anbernic should have stepped up the screen size on this one along with giving it larger buttons. I already have something very similar, the RG351MP. The only advantage the RG353P has over the RG351MP is that it's dual boot and has Android.

I just can't get down with the ergonomics of the RG351 devices. Regardless of specs, I am always more drawn to devices that use existing form factors, they just feel better in hand.

@@victormedrano2316 I finally gave in and got one! Got the Transparent Black and it's such an awesome handheld. It's better than the RG351MP. I've installed a 1TB sd card into my RG353P. Loaded it with TV shows, movies and music tracks after loading up my roms library. The RG353P also has booming stereo speakers, a KODI media player feature and great battery life. I've only used and needed the Linux side of the device, I don't care for the Android side. I also got a PS-Vita carrying case for my RG353P and plan to purchase the US SNES version as well later.

@@jonathonearl482 Excellent, it seems that you take a WHOLE entertainment system, I want a handheld like this but with the option to stream some indie games (metroidvanias and stuff like that) without depending to connect remoting via PC, something like the Steam Deck but without all the bells and whistles and more friendly-oriented to play straight out of the box retro/indie games.. Maybe we are not that far.. cheers!

Thanks for the great review. I’m on the fence since I already own an RP2+ but this seems to have better screen and build quality (but with less power). I just don’t know if I need another 3.5inch 4:3 device. I really wished Anbernic would have gone with a 2gb ram + android build on the rg503 to shake up the market in the 16:9 $150 price range.
@samh58862 жыл бұрын
There is not much point getting this if you have a functioning rp2+ or even other rk3326 handhelds like those from anbernic. Unless you have cash to spare and like collecting retro handhelds.
@Imagination9722 жыл бұрын
Just got mine, can't be more happy. RG351MP was way too heavy but superb 4:3 screen. RG351P was super light, but 3:2 screen ratio? Cmon! RG353P is just the best out of two worlds: 4:3 superb screen, plastic for super light weight PLUS a new chip and dual boot with android. I tested both but when the 353P arrived: no brainer anymore. Only compromis: you need to like the design. I wasn't sure but the NES design with those lovely colors? Loved it!

Great review; sadly I don't see a reason to buy this over a retroid pocket 2+ or other comparable device that can emulate higher. A miyoo mini would be preferrable for ps1 and lower and this doesn't go much higher than that at all. I agree; weird ergononics here and what feels almost like a scam considering how many of "these" type of devices we already have. :( That being said much love retro game corps!
@gamble7778882 жыл бұрын
I think the selling point here is if you are a fan of the SNES controller design.
@Wingnut3532 жыл бұрын
@@gamble777888 That's still really not a good reason... since you are paying more for a frankly much less capable device, the Retroid pocket punches above its price class since it has that one A75 core. that one A75 core lets the UI and emulation have plenty of single thread performance on one core (about 40% more than this device). In the end the rounded shape is mostly athletics and if you really want a little more comfort 3d printing a rounded adapter for the other devices might also deal with that... I don't think ergonomics will really be a home run on any of these devices until you can swap the controllers around as you please... eg you could buy a joystick at top dpad at bottom and snap it on type thing in fact most of these handhelds only have the system in the center with some mostly empty PCB space on the sides so swappable controllers is quite possible.

I got the RP2+, only thing that beats that is upgrading the original devices you emulate on it
@KoalaSnuggles2 жыл бұрын
@@bloodofdepanta I have the RP2+ as well, but I prefer my 351MP for up to PS1 games. Linux is just better for retro emulation, AmberElec is awesome and presets everything with optimal config for you. RP2+ is a pain to set everything up on, and I can't see that there's any community support to improve the firmware for some reason. On the 351MP, the screen is better and the build quality is nicer, also more comfortable to hold than the RP2+. It's not as powerful but overall for the games I play, I enjoy them more on the 351MP. In saying that, I can't see why I would want to get the 353P when the 351 series seem nicer overall.
@BrianEmmons2 жыл бұрын
@@KoalaSnuggles The topic recently came up among the devs in one of the Discord channels I watch, and they all basically said that apparently the RP2+ manufacturer is somewhat hostile or at least not helpful to cfw devs and that's why none of them work on it. These were the devs of various Anbernic firmwares so they might be a bit biased, but that's essentially what it came down to. The RP2+ being android-only is a disqualification for me personally, so I don't have one myself. That makes the comparison between this/the 503 and the RP2+ a little unfair, because Russ always compares them out-of-the-box, which is fine for things like the RP2+ or the Odin but not entirely fair to Anbernic or Powkiddy who just push out hardware and let tinkers do what they will with it. Of course if what you're interested in is a no-fuss experience, well, maybe it *is* fair..

It's funny. A year and a half ago we were marveling at all the performance our communities intrepid developers were finding in their custom firmware and that's really continued up until very recently, getting pretty decent performance out of Saturn on the 3326 based devices. Now, it's almost frustrating, knowing that there's more in the 3566 chip and that we won't really know how good these things are for awhile. It doesn't make sense right now to buy a device on *it might do **_____** thing.* So my question with the 5*3 twins is, why buy them over a 351? The things they do better than the 351 series, they don't do better enough to warrant dealing with their jank. I think a 351P or MP with a better chip is the most obvious thing for Anbernic to do but, instead we've got these two things. It's fun how crazy this whole space is right now. It's especially wild to me that we can look at a device like this and be critical of it because we have so many compelling choices.

I wish they had out the extra ram and dual boot in the RG503. I’m enjoying that handheld for what it is, especially with custom firmware, but the ram and dual boot would have really expanded its capabilities.

Great review as usual. I like the design and has some good features, dual boot for eg is a also a plus. But also has negatives, like most do anyway. For me though, defo the screen size, they have their place and handy for those that want that small pocket/portability. But give me a bigger screen size anyday. Would like to see Anbernic try their hand at a decent 7" .

As far as the Start/Select/Power/Function buttons I think it would have made more sense if they had swapped them around so Power and Function were at the top and Start and Select were in the middle. As it stands the position of these buttons work fine for me.

Been really looking forward to this review, as currently the PocketGo S30 is my product of choice when I'm retro gaming on the go. I also own a PS Vita, 3DS, Switch - even a Retroid Pocket (1) etc. but I always go back to the S30 because of the form factor, price (=> not too worried about accidentally wrecking it) and the CFW. For me personally, the dealbreaker on this one is the current price for EU, which is ~175€ (~185 USD). Guess I'll stick to the things I already have for now, until it goes down quite a bit. On the other side, I really hope there will be more work being done on the CFW, because this product would be the perfect portable N64 machine for me.

Just to let you know, you probably can get better Launchbox performance if you export your collection from Launchbox for Windows, when making thumbnails and video's in windows, set the lowest quality, you won't need 15mb cover arts. I wish they improved this on android, give us an option on what quality/size we want for the videos, thumbnails etc.

People hated on me when I said I didn't like the design of the RG552. What I was saying is that it had a rather boring appearance. Would have been more appealing if the screen had a 4:3 ratio rather than that widescreen. Another thing about the RG552 is that it looks very very similar to the Powkiddy RGB10 Max. Overall, it looks the same as many many other Switch inspired handhelds. That's one of the reasons I like the SNES joypad concept of this RG353P, it's a different look.
