Couple notes/corrections. 1) The "Ultimate 2.4G" has officially iOS support over Bluetooth, while the "Ultimate Bluetooth" does not. 2) the "Ultimate 2.4G" also supports Switch if you press a certain button combo (it is explained in the FAQ for the controller on 8bitdo's site). No Gyro though. 3) the reason the "Ultimate Bluetooth" is flaky on Android is because it connects as a Switch controller, and not all versions of android nor most games support switch controllers. 4) The Ultimate Wired (non-xbox) supports the ultimate software, but only in X-input mode. You can't modify the Switch mode on it, make the paddles and profiles useless if you buy that controller for Switch. I feel like the Ultimate C doesn't support Switch solely because it would make the Ultimate Wired largely pointless. I really wish they picked a better naming scheme, had a signular chart which clearly explained all the differences, and made a version of the Ultimate controller with the 8bitdo SN30 Pro 2's guts in it. Bluetooth feels like an afterthought in these controllers and currently you have to buy 2 different Ultimate controllers to get close to the Pro 2's compatibility.

As an additional correction, as I wish @Retro Game Corps mentioned this in the closing thoughts, be aware of what you need to play on. The cheapest versions, the C Wired and C 2.4g only work on PC and mobile, NOT consoles. The priced-around-$35 Wired Ultimates only work on their respective consoles (Switch or Xbox) and can work on PC, Steam Deck and mobile, YMMV. The Ultimate Software customization should be a starting point to test full compatibility with the PC, but for Linux OS's, either an update needs to be pushed (like from Valve on the Steam Deck, or a modification to the driver to allow the mid-tier Wired to be recognized like an Xbox controller. And don't expect any of the other controllers that aren't officially licensed by Microsoft to work on Xbox without some help.

I just wish they'd _finally_ get to the point to release an ultimate version of the Ultimate controller, i.e. one that _actually_ is able to connect to everything. I don't mind (much) if ABXY are labelled the wrong way for my head, but it just _shouldn't_ be the case that something called "Ultimate" has you decide whether you want to use a controller on the Switch or the Xbox and depending on which you buy, you simply CANNOT use it on one of those devices. The difference in battery life is obviously because one uses Bluetooth Low Energy and the other uses 2.4 GHz. 2.4 GHz is far beyond the frequencies used by Bluetooth. This allows lower latency, higher transfer speed and higher pulling rate. Two of these three advantages are important for the controller. The downside is of course the higher energy consumption. The frequency of electromagnetic waves is proportional to its energy. To achieve a higher frequency you need more energy. This is basic knowledge of wave optics and, at least in Germany, is part of physics lessons in school at the latest in high school. Also, Ah is the unscientific unit of capacity. It doesn't say much about how much electric energy can actually be stored inside of a battery rather than it counts the mass of electrons that can be stored. The correct unit for the electrical storage capacity is Watt-hour (Wh). The Watt-hour of a battery is equal to its Ampere-hour multiplied by its voltage. So, double capacity doesn't mean that the battery can store double the energy and has double the battery life, if the voltage of this battery is lower. E.g. the Samsung Galaxy S21 and the Huawei Mate 20 have both a 4000 mAh battery but Samsung's battery stores 4.6 V while Huawei only stores 4.2 V. This difference in the voltage results in 9.5% more electrical energy stored in Samsung's battery.
@RetroGameCorps Жыл бұрын
I understand the difference in frequencies, but this is the opposite of what you would expect if we have the assumption that 2.4GHz has more battery drain. The 2.4GHz model is a 480mAh battery and gets 15 hours of battery life, the 2.4GHz/BT model has 1000mAh and 22 hours of battery life despite having a battery that is over 2x in size. So it’s likely not the 2.4GHz connection that is affecting battery life, but other features in the BT controller like gyro.

I bought an 8bitdo ultimate bluetooth controller a year ago thinking it would be the end of my controller struggles, but I was so wrong. The ergonomics are laughably bad. The handles have such a narrow spread that they are basically parallel to each other. Compared to an Xbox One controller, which is closer to 45 degrees, the difference is enormous. Just to grip this controller, I have to keep my wrists angled up in an uncomfortable position. When I play with my 8bitdo controller for even a few minutes, it feels like I'm getting carpal tunnel. The triggers have too short of a radius and the bumpers are placed too far up so they are awkward to reach. I love the software and the back buttons, but this controller hurts to use and if that's true, then it doesn't really matter. If this controller had a wider spread angle for its handles and better triggers/bumpers, it would be the best controller of all time. Instead, it collects dust on my shelf.

I have the black version of your favorite one as well with the dock! Loved everything about it until I realized it didn't have gyro :( got stuck on a level of BotW (emulated on PC) and had to plug in a DualShock 4, glad I kept one of those around... made me wonder why I had the 8BitDo in the first place... Also kinda dumb it didnt have Bluetooth .so no Android... but that's my fault for not checking properly. Old Dualshock4 kinda wins again? Most useful on Windows than anything for me anyway. Still love it for everything else! the dock is nice, the little charging white led strip on the bottom looks sick. very usable battery life, (ashamed that i played long enough once to deplete it). I imagine it's better latency than bluetooth? I get a lot of interference sometimes with 2.4Ghz and bluetooth devices having everything on my setup being wireless so having the wireless connection between the dock and the controller instead of in the back of my PC is probably a plus too? Never run into any trouble. So, I like it but I'm a bit annoyed that it isn't actually ''ultimate'' ... I need to keep a dualshock4 around... I should program some macros! forgot about that.

@RetroGameCorps apparently they changed it. The 2.4g version you like now has a Hall effects option. I doubt you’ll see this. But I’d love to hear your opinion.

I wanted to love my Ultimate Wired Xbox controller, but the left stick wore out to a point where the deadzone had to be set to 78% to restore full range in-game in just over a month. Granted, I acknowledge that I do play a LOT more than average, being an anti-social hermit working from home, and mostly racing games, but come on! A month!?! Also, it wasn't the inside of the stick travel that wore out - it was the OUTSIDE! This is why my next Xbox controller purchase will be the GameSir G7 SE, but if 8BitDo puts the sticks from the Switch controller in the Xbox model, I would give it a shot, because stick wear aside, I LOVED how it felt...

When I need gyro on my PC the only alternative is the DS4 - works great with Steam Deck & I've previously gotten TF2 connected to control the cursor with the gyro much like splatoon. I played like that for like a week and then went back to normal but yeah the gyro works great and it still has analog triggers.

I'm still so mad that NONE of these "ultimate" controllers can use XInput over Bluetooth. The 8bitdo Pro 2 had a dedicated input selector for DirectInput, XInput, Switch, and even a MacOS mode - and you could use ANY of these input modes over Bluetooth OR pair the controller to a 2.4 GHz 8bitdo dongle! EDIT: I reinvestigated the options on my Pro 2 and realized that the DirectInput mode does *not* allow for both analog triggers and gyro input the way I thought - it seems to allow for the same input types as the Switch mode, with the only difference being that Steam recognizes the input mode as a "generic gamepad" rather than a Switch pro controller. My comment has been updated to reflect this - and the anger that there's still no XInput over bluetooth on the Ultimates. Curiously, the MacOS mode DOES expose both analog triggers and a gyro input to the host device, but the gyro does not actively output in this mode. There's also no custom control settings for the MacOS mode, which is why I've reduced my claim of twelve custom control layouts to nine. Continuing original comment: Not only did the Pro 2 mode selector selector specify the input features (XInput doesn't include gyro, Switch doesn't include analog triggers, -DirectInput includes all of it but is often a bigger hassle to get working- ) but it also allowed for -FOUR- THREE SETS of custom control profiles ( -twelve- nine in total!) that could often be used flexibly since, for example, Switch and DirectInput controllers are often compatible with the same devices (in fact, Switch input is just a more specific version of DirectInput, so having both options wasn't really necessary from the beginning - but that's not what I'm mad about). Now the near-top "Ultimate" controller has only XInput and DInput, and no Bluetooth at all - only a dedicated dongle. The top-end "Ultimate" controller lets you switch between Bluetooth and dongle, but guess what? That also switches the input type! With the dongle, it only allows XInput, so no gyro--and the Bluetooth only allows Switch input, so no analog triggers! The biggest casualty here seems to be remote streaming. I love to stream games from Steam to my phone or Nvidia Shield, and the Pro 2 was perfect for that - pair to Bluetooth and select XInput if I want analog triggers, or Switch if I want the gyro. But I don't have a wealth of USB ports on my phone, nor any at all on my Shield, so I can only pair this Ultimate controller in Bluetooth mode - which means no analog triggers on Shield or Android at all! If this has changed with some software update, please someone let me know, I would love to revisit this controller and fall in love with it. I want the Pro 2 features on an XBox-style stick layout, and it really had so much promise, it just fell victim to corporate greed artificially limiting features that worked perfectly well on a previous model.

In regards to mode-switching for the Ultimate BT. It seems that feature is only available on the Receiver Firmware 1.02Beta1. I just tested it with my Controller using the latest firmware (v1.03) and it does indeed work, but is a little cumbersome. For instance it turned the controller off during the mode switch, so I had to press the Home button to re-connect it afterwards. Something to note is that because it is the Receiver that is changing the modes, this functionality is only available in 2.4ghz mode. A few months ago a reddit user got a response from 8BitDo support saying that the mode switch is still in beta, so it may come out officially in the future, but for now if you want the functionality you will need to use v1.02beta1 for your receiver. Unfortunately, downloading this beta firmware can also be difficult as old links seem to have expired, but you can find re-uploads and newer links on reddit. Alternatively you can try asking 8bitdo support directly.

Thanks so much. My friend wants to get into gaming on a budget and I know 8bitdo is a good brand but I only have first party controllers (and a Logitech F310 which I wouldn't recommend)

I've had several of these. The SN30, SN30+, Pro 2 (maybe Pro 1 as well? hard to keep up with this company) and just last month I got the 2.4Ghz Ultimate for XBOX in black. The cradle is mainly why I got it... I was fine with the Pro 2, but that charging cradle is just too convenient (plus, no wear on a USB port.) Only gripe is that it has no replaceable battery like the others.

I would've loved the Hall sensors, but... yeah, I'm not gonna pay $70 for a controller that I use for PC in XBOX mode and have the buttons be mislabeled. I know it's a dumb nitpick but... anyway, while Hall sensors are undoubtedly a superior technology, it's not like I expect a gamepad to be something that lasts so long that I'm handing it down to my grandchildren or something. For me the 2.4Ghz-only XBOX one just made more sense.

One other note is that everyone says 2.4Ghz has less input lag than Bluetooth, but that Bluetooth is lower power so the battery lasts longer. Just additional info.

Also I won't lie... part of my consideration was the color. While I am a shut-in and I don't care what anyone ELSE thinks, there's just no way I wanna be looking at those goofy pale pastel colored controllers. 😂

Can confirm Mac OS compatibility to those it may concern, works in Bluetooth mode but I couldn't get it working in 2.4 GHz mode. Tested on 1.03 software version on Intel Macbook with Mac OS 11, as well as M1 Macbook with Mac OS 13. Ultimate software is only supported on Apple Silicon Macs.

As european, I really loved the 8bitdo SF30 Pro cloning the appearance of the japanese+eur snes controller. I really do not know why they stoped manufacturing them and now only the US model is available along a "not that similar" eur model that quite frankly the colors are very disappointing

Love 8bitdo. The dealbreaker on so many controllers for me is non-replaceable batteries. The Pro 2 checks that box. Just wish we would get a Pro 3 with Hall effect sticks. Mine doesn’t have drift (yet), but when it will continue to last…just a matter of time. I do have a Zero 2 and Arcade stick (and wireless Sega Classic) which all have rechargeable batteries. I just don’t use them as much as the Pro 2.
