Update: reverting to the GameSir v4200 firmware fixed the Switch Pro controller bug I mentioned in the video. Downgrading is simple, just pair the controller with your Android/iPhone with the GameSir app (available on each phone's respective app store) and then choose Update Firmware > Other Firmware > v4200 and follow the prompts. Hopefully GameSir makes a firmware fix in the future, and I'll be sure to update this comment when they do!

Were you able to test connecting the gamesir to the steam deck over bluetooth? I have tried both the Android/DS4 modes (A/B) and encountered the same issue. I put the steam deck to sleep, and then the controller never pairs after waking. It slowly blinks. Oddly enough the gamesir controller appears in the bluetooth menu on the steam deck, but no input is ever registered. I have tried firmware 6900 and 4200. I wanted to utilize the bluetooth connection to avoid using the adapter when I play on the go. If I can't work out how to use this, I will need to return. Same situation with the adapter as my xbox 360 controller.

For Gamesir Nova Lite; * Choose FW4200 if you want to connect as Bluetooth Xinput (Xbox Controller) via HOME+B buttons. * Choose FW5700 and newer if you want to connect as Bluetooth DS4 (DualShock4 Controller) via HOME+B buttons. * Check your default firmware which your controller came with. It's important because it determines your 2.4GHz dongle (receiver) firmware. FW 4200: - Home + B: BT XInput, seems as "XBox controller" - Home + A: BT Android (HID) - Home + X: Dongle XInput/Switch Pro/Android (Hold the View+Menu (Select+Start) buttons for 2s to hot swap between modes!) - Home + Y: BT Switch Pro FW 5700 (and FW6900?): - Home + B: BT DS4, seems as "Dualshock 4 controller" - Home + A: BT Android (HID) - Home + X: Dongle XInput/Switch Pro/Android (Caution: If you upgrade an old default firmware to FW5700 and up, this will only work as Switch Pro, because the old dongle firmware is not compatible with newer controller firmwares!) - Home + Y: BT Switch Pro If one connect as Bluetooth DS4 (Led: Blue) via Home+B combination, then the controller most likely came directly with 5700 firmware (or maybe with FW6900 with newer batches.) While there was the option to connect with Bluetooth Xinput in FW4200, this option was replaced by BT Dualshock4 in FW5700 (I think in order to increase compatibility with IOS and older games.) In fact, if we consider that the Dongle Xinput mode still works on the 5700, we can say that overall compatibility has increased and there has been an improvement. But of course, the practicality of connecting with BT Xinput has also been eliminated unfortunately. There is also another issue with the 5700: If the controller came with 4000, 4200, 4800 firmware and you upgrade it to 5700 (and 6900?) via Gamesir app, the dongle (receiver) no longer works properly as before. People complain that they can't connect as Xinput with the dongle anymore, but can only connect as Switch Pro. ( just like @RetroGameCorps ) The reason for this is that the dongle firmware of the controllers that came with old firmwares is not compatible with the 5700. If you have upgraded the controller to 5700 and are happy with it, but want the dongle to work as before, you need to update the firmware of the dongle as well. Gamesir has not released an official fw for this yet, but upon a user's request, they sent the dongle firmware for the 5700 by e-mail, and it is said to work. It can be downloaded from the web and applied on PC. Google with the "T4NL dongle upgrade.zip" and you can access the file which also contains visuals and video on how to do the process. (I did NOT try it myself yet!) However, it should be noted that this process is currently irreversible! Because we do not have the old dongle firmware file and as can be seen in the FW upgrade image, we do not have the opportunity to dump and save the old one from the software. Therefore, we still need to contact Gamesir and wait for them to publish or send it. (In other words, if you switch from 5700 to 4200, the dongle will not work properly. Although the connection is possible as BT Xinput, Dongle Xinput mode will not work!) My device came with 4800 fw. It was not connecting with Home+B neither as BT Xinput nor as BT DS4. The LED was constantly flashing Yellow and forcing pairing (Home + Screenshot) did not work either. Anyway, when you try to update with Gamesir app, 4800 is not among your options. This is an indication and proof that 4800 fw has a major problem, they sent it like that at first place. So I was going to either decrease it to 4200 which is generally satisfactory or increase it to 5700. Since the option to connect as BT DS4 would not be very useful for me and I did not want to deal with dongle update, I decreased FW to 4200. Thus, Home+B BT Xinput mode also works and dongle/cable options are as problem-free as before. Gamesir should release a firmware which adds an extra pairing option (with Home+View or Home+Menu ie.) to connect as BT Xinput and BT DS4 both. That would surely be awesome! Finally, it should be added that the FW update is risky and some Nova Lite users bricked their devices while doing the process. The devices were no longer opening at all and there was no sign of life. I only saw a Reddit user write that he brought the device back to life by plugging it in after days passed. After the battery was completely dead, the settings were reset and the device opened with the old FW, i guess. However, it should be added that some similar users tried by removing the battery and putting it back in, but could not fix it. So be careful while tinkering. (I had no problems updating from 4800 to 4200 with the Gamesir App: v5.2.10 from github.) I very like the vast variety of connection options that Nova Lite serves. But i didn't like the Dpad, because it has a huge false diagonals problem. I will open the device and glue some thin tape over the center pivot soon, hope to get the Dpad work more precisely. (Don't tape partly over the 4 direction connection pads, or the overall responsiveness will decrease!)

do the triggers work as analog when using bluetooth to pc? I've heard mixed reports. Someone said they only work as 2 stage with bluetooth and need the cable on pc for them to be analog.
@FernandoBloom9932 ай бұрын
I'd like to share that the 8bitdo Ultimate 2.4 controller had a consistent issue where both of the triggers slowly lose functionality due to faulty parts. 8bitdo WILL fix it, but if it happens outside of your Amazon return period they'll make you pay for shipping and handling rather than sending you parts or sending a replacement. Love the controller, but after 7 months both my triggers are at half functionality, and thats super disappointing. Found several other people online who have stories like mine, so I don't believe it's a one off fluke. For those who are interested, the triggers have a sharp (acute) piece that connects with the sensor, so over time the piece depresses the sensor deeper and deeper, so without replacing that sharp internal piece (which is just the back side of the trigger), you'll probably inevitably lose trigger functionality regardless of how gentle you are.

This has started to become an issue on my Ultimate 2.4G controller. It only register around 70% when the triggers is fully pressed down. This caused issues when playing certain games like GTA or RDR2 where certain weapons wouldn't work and on Forza where I'm not using the full potential of my car's top speed. I've owned it for nearly 3 months now and this is also the updated hall-effect stick model. The trigger might now be the biggest weak point of the controller and will look elsewhere now for possible replacement later on.

I have to disagree with your conclusion from the Contra test for the 2C. If you see your fingers, they're not just wiggling slightly left and right, they are just actually pressing where you would when you want a diagonal, giving you the diagonal. Your 3S test tells a lot more about the accuracy of the dpad too. The most important thing being that you didn't get a single errant diagonal jump input, which can be the bane of many fighting game players. For something that feels like a Vita dpad with the covering of a SNES, it actually does seem to be giving you the exact same kinds of results that I get from my Vita. I'd suggest using Fightcade and the training lua for the 3S test in the future, especially as it's very helpful for figuring out how the game is actually registering the controller's inputs. Otherwise, I can only say keep up the good work, very few reviewers being as meticulous regarding controller reviews, especially budget ones. Cheers 🎉

It's so funny to me that you say the 8BitDo Ultimate Controller's d-pad is good for retro games, but the Ultimate 2C isn't. I love the Ultimate Controller 1 a lot, but the d-pad has always been a problem for me cause making it do diagonals at all is a struggle. I have to really put a lot of pressure on it to make it go, and even then it sometimes drops them halfway through. The 2C's d-pad has been a dream! It's clicky, I haven't had any miss input issues, and it never drops diagonal inputs. I'm honestly thinking about transplanting the d-pad from the 2C into one of my Ultimate Controller 1s, maybe with the metal sticks too. Whenever a controller "fails" the Contra test, I think, "Good, that's what it's supposed to do. You push to the right and it goes to the right."

The 2C looks great, though I'm sad it does not have a gyro. I'd like to have a wired version of the top end ultimate with the dongle. I have one of the Famicom anniversary edition controllers they put out of the Ultimate Bluetooth controller with the dock. (BTW for anyone reading the bluetooth ones also come with a 2.4ghz dongle. It stores inside the dock too.) I have to say though, with the fully-loaded ultimate with the dock coming down in price it does look like a good choice for extra controllers. But it'd be nice to have those features in wired so I could have those controllers for guests and not have to worry about a battery at all. Also, just a reminder to everyone who is wondering, switch controllers do work on windows natively, so do PS5. On windows you can use the switch on the back to basically have the controller read a xinput or switch on a PC. And those different modes have different functions. Like if you use xinput you aren't going to get gyro because xinput doesn't support gyro. If you use the controller as a switch controller on a PC then Steam can detect the gyro but then you lose analog triggers. I really wish Microsoft would add gyro to xinput already. The only good way I've found get analog and gyro triggers is to connect the controllers to PC as Dualshock or Dualsense controller as that supports both.

I keep my Batocera install on an external USB3 SSD so that I can take it with me and plug it into my laptop if I need a gaming fix while traveling, and I've always been afraid that whatever controller I pack with me would get damaged during transit, or that I would lose its dongle. I've been having an issue with the original ultimate dpad where the diagonals are a bit too strenuous to hold down. If you don't apply a lot of force to the diagonals, they don't register. This forces your diagonal inputs to be deliberate, which is fine for a lot of games but is incredibly straining on the finger when it comes to games where you move in 8 directions. In those cases I resort to using the analog stick instead because it's significantly more comfortable. I am interested in this controller because I heard that it is a lot lighter and more tactile, and this review confirms that it's easier to hit the diagonals.

Thanks for this video! Reflecting on the functionalities and your impressions on both of these, I went for the Nova Lite. In the past week I've been really enjoying using it on PC and I also plan to use it as a second-player controller for Switch -- actually the main reason for my choice is covering both scenarios with the same (cheap!) product. So far the only thing I don't love about it is the shape of the triggers, they're kinda thin. I think I'd like the 8bitdo a bit better in this regard. But it's not something that bothers me during normal use.

I have an 8BitDo SN30 Pro and it's pretty great. Only thing is, weirdly enough, the rubber on one of the sticks just... came off. No idea how that happened. Still, aside from that weirdness, it's a very well made controller and I tend towards 8BitDo for the more budget side of things.

IDK if this is a hot take, but the back buttons and those L4 and R4 buttons should be standard on controllers and be usable as extra buttons. More and more games are becoming playable on controllers that just feel they need more buttons than a normal controller provides.

For those who want to buy an Ultimate 2C here are some tips. Currently the bluetooth connection works on Windows and Linux. There were issues on Steam OS, but I recently tested it and it works out of the box. You can set up an X-input and D-input mode, which is only compatible with the 2.4G dongle (although you can do something similar with the bluetooth connection if you have an 8bitdo usb adapter 2, which allows you to use the analog triggers on Windows for example). To force X-input mode you must press the X button and turn off the controller. Release the button, then press the X button again and turn on. To force D-input mode you must press the B button and turn off the controller. Release the button, then press it again and turn on. It only works with the 2.4G dongle. I emphasize this here, because the method is slightly different from the previous version of the controller, the Ultimate C.

Fair warning for the 8BitDo Ultimate C (not to be confused with 2C, which is the one shown in this video), from someone that has bought 2 of them. While it is relatively good on the first month or so, the controller will be VERY prone to drifting amongst many other issues after that point. You WILL have to get another controller when that happens, which at this point, just means you should've splurged on an Ultimate instead. If you're lucky and got the HE Joysticks version (which is the 2C), chances are you might not have these issues with the refresh... But be very careful when you are shopping for those, as the Ultimate C stands for "Cheap"... in many different ways.

I do like that they moved the re-mappable buttons to the triggers. My normal controller is an older 8BitDo Pro+, my brother has the Pro2 and I prefer my older controller for lacking the bottom paddles. And when creating complex mappings on Steam Deck, I tend to use the triggers and bumpers more for features traditionally on the face buttons. There I do like the paddles as they don't interfere with my grip as much, but I would rather have more bumpers, so I can fully map the front diamond to them without loosing functionality. So good to see that newer 8BitDo offerings seem to give this. Though on the Bluetooth, if it works with Android, it'll work with Linux and most likely Windows too, since Android just implements the basic controller standard. That's similar to how my Pro+ claims to connect to Raspberry Pi, which actually means any Linux system being able to work with it. But it might be a matter of what they actively support.

I like the line on offer by 8bitdo that goes way back retro wise and I had been contemplating on the SNES style controller but with 2 Playstation placement analogue sticks and their arcade stick to get the old school feel with additional modern touches. The hard case was a intriguing inclusion and should be standard for all wireless controllers. Not exactly what I'm looking for at the moment but great overview nonetheless. Interesting that you mention high quality GameSir d-pads. I have a G7SE as my main Xbox controller, and I've noticed while playing Morrowind that the forward and left d-pad buttons will move my character at full speed, while the back and right buttons will move the character at a walk. The d-pad works at full speed in menus, so I dont know if this is just a quirk with Morrowind specifically, or if I'd have problems playing retro games using the d-pad. Owned the Ultimate 2C for almost 4 weeks. Imo it's their most premium quality controller yet! The anti-fraction rings really helps the sticks feel much smoother. The bumpers and hall effect triggers feel fantastic, I love the tactile clickyness of the bumpers and the triggers feels buttery smooth. The extra bumpers are a nice edition, it maybe be confusing at first to set up the programmable bumpers but I got the hang of it quickly. And personally for the d-pad, I can perform fighting game inputs with ease despite the fact it's tactile instead of membrane. Even though if you move around the down part of the d-pad and get diagonal input sometimes, the membrane d-pads also do that as well lol. Also one last thing to note, the textures of the back grips are much better than prevous Ultimate controllers! They are more akin to the Pro 2 back grip textures and is something that doesn't get much praise! Also don't get forget to download the Ultimate Software to upgrade the firmware of the Ultimate 2C! You go to the support page on the 8bitdo website, then the Ultimate Software page, and finally the Ultimate Software V2 page will be open if you choose either type of the Ultimate 2C! I hope everything that I said helps! Try out this controller if you can!

I got both, despite being budget and similar in price range, Nova Lite feels like a real budget controller, everything feels cheap and janky about it. It's not a bad controller in any way, you just can't get any lower without having a real bad controller. 2C on the other hand, feels like a proper ~$60 controller, similar to other more expensive 8bitdo Ultimate controllers. So I'd say, for Switch - get a regular Nova with HD rumble, for multiplatform "pc-xbox" like experience, 2C and Flydigi Direwolf 2 are two absolute best budget controllers right now. P.S. Not sure about 2C dpad, but on 3-Mode dpad is perfect, the best from two worlds of membrane and tact switches buttons, extremely accurate while much softer and quite than other tact switch dpads I've seen. On 19:32 you're showing a stiff dpad with lack of "rolling" capabilites which is a sign of a cheap and bad dpad. Some people can find it as an advantage to avoid accidental diagonal inputs, but it's still a cheap and bad membrane dpad. If I remember correctly 8bitdo software has an option to switch between 4-way and 8-way dpad to avoid unwanted diagonal inputs, for any other cases you just need to choose a controller with dpad that fits your playstyle.

18:07 I've really noticed it even in your previous "third strike tests" but this is more prominent here. You always press the punch button way too late that's why the hadouken wouldn't come out. (Ken just ends up punching air while standing.) In some of your older dpad test videos (and just later in the video now that I've rewatched it) you press it too early when you're doing the hadouken motion (Ken punching while he's still ducking). Or sometimes the punch's "negative edge" would just register that's why you're getting a ducking punch immediately with a thrown hadouken. I know you said you're not a good at these fighting game motions but you may want to consistently throw hadoukens first on a controller you're more comfortable then revisit the "third strike" tests again. More of a "when to hit punch" timing thing
@xheezy2 ай бұрын
That being said I used to have the first version of the Ultimate controller and I do remember that because the placement of the D-pad is too in the middle I also had a hard time doing hadouken motions because the Dpad is just too awkwardly positioned there. It might be more comfortable with folks that have larger hands. The "ultimate" 8bitdo controllers are more for modern sensibilities that use analog directions all the time as opposed to for use with retro games. Now 8bitdo's SN30 and Pro2.. those are the ones you use for retro D-pad centric gaming

It is wild that Gamesir can make a pretty good controller, with hall effect sticks and built-in battery, for half the price of an original Xbox controller. Here in Brazil it is even worse, the Xbox model is four times the price of an imported Gamesir. The Bluetooth limitation on the 8BitDo 2Cdoes not make sense me. Why restrict compatibility in this way? I was torn between the GameSir and 8BitDo, but went with the GameSir as it was cheaper. Glad I made the best choice.

Have been using the 8BitDo Ultimate C wired controller for the past year and have really been impressed with the quality and especially the durability per dollar. I had gone through several Microsoft Xbox wireless controllers over the past few years, and they always seem to last only a few months before they started to develop stick drift . Although I still really greatly prefer the Xbox style of d-pad , having to shell out about $50 every few months got to be a deal-breaker. At $75, I also tried the Gulikit KingKong 2 Pro wireless, but was severely disappointed in it. The feel was OK, but the trigger function was extremely underwhelming. The triggers had very short travel and an almost zero resistance feel. This basically made the controller triggers function more like a digital input rather than an analog one. This made it practically useless for racing games. At $20 , the wired 8BitDo is a pretty amazing value, if you can tolerate the cord.
