Hi ETA PRIME, just wondering, why can't you overwrite your saves if you know that you will never go back to that certain save?
@necrogenesis1981
@necrogenesis1981 7 жыл бұрын
So there's no way to use the game's save function normally? You have to use save states? I tried saving at the save area in Illusion of Gaia and the data wasn't there, I had no issue with it on my Windows PC. One other question, are the save states separate for each game? In other words, will a save state for one game be overwritten by a save state in another?
@basedmadlad6740
@basedmadlad6740 7 жыл бұрын
Russell You can save in game and on states. Essentially, in Emulation Station (assuming you're using that for Retropie), it runs off of Retroarch primarily. You can choose save state slots (I've hotkeyed it to Select + DPad Left/Right on a SNES controller) and save onto that slot. You can choose which slot to load and do that too. However, if you want to save your actual game, all you need to do is navigate to settings and turn on "Save metadata on exit". This allows your console to save all of the changes made (such as saving your game, adding a game to favorites, or fiddling with a config file). Make sure to fully shutdown your system before cutting off power to it, to make sure no data is lost. If that doesn't work, I'll help you further.
@basedmadlad6740
@basedmadlad6740 7 жыл бұрын
And yes, save states are separate for each game. "Save states are 'snapshots' of a game's progress. Save states differ from the save functionality built into most games - because they are produced by the emulator itself, they carry none of the limitations that the game or console may otherwise impose. You can create any number of save states you like, as frequently as you like, and loading them will take you back to precisely where you were in the game when they were taken (even in the middle of a battle or cut scene). You may use a game's built-in save mechanism instead of or in addition to save states, if you like." Essentially, you are suspending a snapshot of the game, not truly saving. I do both to be sure.

My son already started a game and has a lot of progress into it. Is there any way for him to turn on 'save metadata' without jeopardizing his progress?
@basedmadlad6740
@basedmadlad6740 7 жыл бұрын
PrivateJohnGarrett Yes, turning on save metadata will have no effect on his progress whatsoever. It basically means that if you exit Retropie all data will automatically save. It won't affect save games at all (this includes save states and such).

He says you should use Select in these button combinations, but the reason he uses Select is because that's set as the Hotkey button on his controller. But your controller might have a different button set as the Hotkey button (like the PS/Xbox button if you're using a PlayStation/Xbox controller). So find out what button you set as the Hotkey and use that in these button combinations instead of Select.
@LastBastian
@LastBastian 3 жыл бұрын
@@SEB1991SEB I can't get mine to work either. Someone else set the controls, my main hotkey is the PS button, but no button combo seems to save. ??
@SEB1991SEB
@SEB1991SEB 3 жыл бұрын
@@LastBastian Are you sure your PS button is the hotkey button? Does it work for quitting a game? If so, then I don't know what the problem could be honestly. It would depend on how your friend set the hotkey controls. There is a way to check which hotkey buttons are used for each controller that's mapped to RetroPie, and to change each controller's hotkey button combinations. It's a bit of a long-winded process but it's the only thing I can think to recommend. It's not too complicated really though once you know what to do. To do this first make sure you have a keyboard connected to your Raspberry Pi, and then complete the following steps: 1. Go into the RetroPie Menu 2. Click 'Configuration Editor' 3. Click 'Advanced Configuration' 4. Click 'Manually edit RetroArch configurations' 5. In this screen there should be a .cfg file for each controller you have mapped to RetroPie. Click on the .cfg file of the controller you want to view 6. This .cfg file is a plain text file that you can then scroll through with your keyboard. In this .cfg file is a list of the controller's buttons and the numbers they're mapped to. It also shows all the Hotkey actions and the numbers they're mapped to. By looking at the hotkey actions' numbers, and comparing them with the controller buttons' numbers, you can figure out which controller buttons are mapped to which hotkey actions (eg. if the Save State hotkey action is mapped to the number 11, and the controller's Down button is mapped to the number 11, then you know that the Save State action is mapped to the controller's Down button) 7. You can also edit this .cfg file to change the numbers that the Hotkey actions are mapped to (don't change the numbers of the controller buttons though since that will cause the controller to stop working). So if you want to map the Right Shoulder button to the Save State hotkey action, you would first scroll down through the list until you find the Right Shoulder button (input_r_btn), and you'd take note of its number (eg. 4). Then you'd scroll through the list until you find the Save State hotkey action (input_save_state_btn), and you'd change its number to the same number as the Right Shoulder button (4). You can then use this method to map other hotkey actions to other controller buttons 8. To exit this .cfg file, press the Tab key on the keyboard to highlight the 'OK' button, and then click it. You'll be back at the previous screen with all the controller .cfg files 9. If you've changed the hotkey actions with that controller, then they'll only work with that controller. So you'll have to do the same with each of the controller .cfg files in this screen. (Even if you have just one controller though, it is recognised as a separate controller when it's wireless as opposed to wired, so it will have two separate .cfg files that you'll have to edit) Let me know if you need any help with it.

Hey ETA, thanks for all you do, it was you who inspired me to build a cabinet. I have a question, my hot key for save state some how got altered. When in game play, Left shoulder button wants to activate the save state to slot 0. I went in retroarch and tried to disable or reassign it so that it don’t interfere with game play. I reassigned it to my coin button, so now I can play games without interference, but it still activates when I add coins. Not sure what to do? I tried assigning multiple buttons but It won’t allow me to. Can you offer any advice? I appreciate it, thank you.

Thank you for your videos, ETA Prime! I tried to create my own mobile RetroPie with a 5" display, PS3 controller, a power bank and an external USB sound card. So far my project is a success but there are two problems I encountered and cannot solve (yet). Maybe they are worth a video or two. My problems: 1. Since the Waveshare 5" 800x480 display does not have an integrated scaler the resolution must be forced via configuration file of the Pi. My Pi will not be used solely for mobile use and thus I like to hook it up with my HD TV from time to time. With this forced resolution the HDMI out does not work anymore. Is there any possibility to let the Pi detect the optimal resolution? There is a function called EDID, which lets you identify your connected display with an identification number and create your own settings for it. Unfortunately, the 5" display lacks this functionality. 2. The headphone jack on the Pi offers awful sound quality. As a workaround I purchased an external USB soundcard and got it working after editing a config file. The bad thing is I have to change the files to get the audio from the HDMI working again. Can the Pi somehow detect whether the external sound card is connected (if so: use it) or not (sound via HDMI)? Any help is appreciated!

This is a really misleading video because you don't explain that the reason these button combinations use the Select button is because you've already set the Select button as the Hotkey. But if everyone else set a different button as the Hotkey then using Select won't work for them. On a PS3 controller people would normally set the PS button as the Hotkey, so using Select wouldn't work for them, they should use the PS button instead.

Is anybody able to post a list of the button mapping numbers? Or is it just numbered in order of preference when you setup the controls in retropie?

Any idea why this method doesn't work for me? I read someone mentioning to edit the .cfg to change the save state keys to actual button presses, which I tried doing but I am still unable to save. I can select through the save slot numbers, but actually saving (I am using a PS4 controller) doesn't work for whatever reason.

If I save a game at a certain point then as I get further into the game I save again and further again I save will the amount of saves I make be numbered so i can only save a certain amount of times? And what if I do save over a save I already made what will it do? Lastly will this mess up the game to where I can only play it from the saves and not from the beginning?

Is it possible to transfer (in game) saves from retro pi to android? I have a PSX game I've been playing on the Retro Pi and want to add the file to play via ePSXe on my android tablet. I have gone into the PSX folder located the .sav file on the Pi and copied this across to the PC then into the PSX folder on my tablet with the ROM. When I launch ePSXe it launches the game but has no save present?

I’ve been trying to save with the in game save, it doesn’t work after it is turned off. Does this method of saving stay after its been powered down? (I doubt it but I thought I’d ask.

It does work after being turned off. I saved the game yesterday and unplugged the pi completely. I just checked it now, and it was able to load the save file without trouble. The in-game save doesn't actually seem to be saved to the pi, but this method does save it to the sd card under roms, as was mentioned around 4:08 in the video.

I can't get this to work with an SNES style controller. Perhaps since it is only R and L mapping rather then the R2 and L2 mapping of your PS controller? However, I also heard this can be done with a keyboard using F2 and F4. No dice there either...same for Alt F2/F4. I have read several forum posts and so far this is not working for me. I am on latest version of retropie. Any ideas?

When you mapped the controller did you set the L and R to the shoulder buttons?
@PeteC75
@PeteC75 8 жыл бұрын
+ETA PRIME I only mapped L1 and R1, I left L2 and R2 unmapped. Should I map both buttons to each single shoulder button so pressing one presses both? I didn't know what effect that would have.
@ETAPRIME
@ETAPRIME 8 жыл бұрын
+PeteC75 I'm pretty sure you need to map L2 and R2 instead of L1-R1 , I will take a look when I get home

+ETA PRIME Yeah I think you are right. I just watched a video of someone mapping an SNES controller, and they only mapped the Bottom Shoulder buttons and skipped the Top Shoulder buttons. I did the opposite. I need to re-run that mapping tool and try it again. Thanks for the tip!

+ETA PRIME Is there a way to re-run the controller setup like when you map it the first time? Or am I stuck going into config files now?
