Same experience, I tried it out, really enjoyed the gameplay and the atmosphere. I put it down for a week or two after putting a few hours into it, dyinh just on the first biome and even with how beautiful it was and how much every aspect of it felt right; I just couldn't continue. but it kept calling back to me so, I gave it a good go probably a week or so ago and have been hooked ever since. Being a huge fan of the binding of Isaac, having somewhat of the same concept in a 3rd person shooter is honestly so cool, once I died the 2nd or 3rd time I really started to grasp what type of game it was and it made me even more addicted to it because you never know what you’re going to run into, I’m still pretty new and have had the game for only a week or so but I’m super excited to see where the story goes and how I can perfect each run.

Same here! I actually pre-ordered it. I played through the first level multiple times. Deleted the save and played it again. Rinse and repeat. I gave up on it until few days ago. This time I went in with a different mindset. First time playing a rogue-like game and was surprised at how difficult this game was, but I enjoy playing it over and over again. It was surprisingly addictive to me and didn’t frustrate me as much as time has passed (now on the 2nd biome). Learning enemy movements, attack patterns and being efficient with my shooting instead of a “run and gun” style has made this a pleasurable experience so far. Got the digital deluxe version on sale and am pleased with every dollar spent.

This game brought pure enjoyment of the moment back in focus for me in a way. At least the games I've been gravitating towards had been further and further away from that in my opinion and my focus had shifted more on 'making progress' and beating games to move on to the next. I was immensely frustrated with Returnal at first because of this despite consistently having a lot of fun with the gameplay itself. It kind of really hit me at some point that despite its presentation and modern envelope, it's really a pure old-school Arcade Shooter at heart. The focus is on mastering specific encounters, specific rooms and by extension the actual Biomes. It kind of reminds me of a game I played the shit out of as a kid at this point, Contra III on SNES. You played those levels till you mastered it because it was extremely fun. Maybe one day you'll beat it but it wasn't the the point really. Edit: As a note on your gameplay footage, and I know this is months old now, but really lean into Melee. It's extremely powerful and has short cooldown AND has a magnetizing animation. It's meant to be used as part of the core combat loop and will one-shot those turrets for example.

Very well said! I think a game like Contra is actually a great comparison. And yes, I improved my gameplay a lot from this moment 😄 I've thought about doing some sort of follow-up video to this one after seeing how it resonated with a lot of people. Just to get back to where you were... It's just ridiculous imo. This comment section is really interesting. I found that many of the people that persevered found an excellent experience with this game with rewarding gameplay. On the other hand the people that thought this game was difficult and couldn’t pull through subtly trash the game or outright say it’s shit and should have been made easier. The reality is that it is deeply rewarding for the people didn’t give up because of its difficulty and it’s not bad because of the difficulty. Its not even that punishing, each time you beat a biome you also unlock a shortcut and after the third biome you start each time from the fourth. I seriously don’t understand the harsh criticism. People just need to accept that they weren’t good enough or gave up, or whatever reason and shouldn’t take the victim role and call it bad because of their own shortcomings.

What I dislike is that it's a rogue game meaning when I finally reached 2nd área the dessert looking one, I died and was sent back to the first área and I get bored having to find my way back since it changes everytime. I can accept dying on area 2 and start from the beggining of area 2 but having to go back to the beggining of the first stage nah that's when I stop playing it I rather the souls formula

I've tried and tried this game literally 6 times, I legit do not understand it?! In the sense of where am I supposed to go or what I'm supposed to do? And for that reason I always stop trying to play it. I'm jealous of others who love it and understand it, I'm too much of an idiot to comprehend it I guess

look up the youtube guides, there is so much usefull tips and info, i was struggling until i used them now things are much easyer, eg changeing a few settings make all the difference eg change the rectical to large and auto aim to high, that way you can focus on movement rather than pin point acucracy.

I'm not even a dad and have put a lot more time into this game than any other and I still hate it. Can't get past the first biome and have no chance of getting better at it since I start from the beginning with the crappiest weapons every time I die, which is almost a hundred times in the last couple weeks. I really wanted to like this game, but I think I'll pass. I'll stick to the casual games.

I just picked up Returnal this week after being obsessed with Hades (have you played it?) and I’m already so hooked. A week in and I just hit the 4th biome. The game is still so incredibly hard but I enjoy the fact that every time I die.. there is something I could have done (usually easily) to not die. It’s always a learning experience. I’m addicted to it. I’m not putting it down until I beat it🤣🖤

This game is so fun that every time I died my response wasn’t frustration, but rather “Ok, I can do it this time. Just one more run”. Of course “one more run” usually turned into about 5 more runs.

Looks great but I feel like that loop it has is put in place to make a game that is short, longer. Just got PS plus extra so I will give it a try

I played Returnal for many hours last year (just short of second boss). This was the first and only game I have rage-quit, a year ago. I despise this game because of this insane starting over from the beginning and reseting your weapon to 0. (this is not positive reinforcement). The character you play is not interesting or remarkable in any way, the only thing of interest is finding how and why the situation occurred. I don't like the idea of having to play a perfect game in order to finish the game. That being said, I see the comments of people gushing over the game; but one KZbin poster said something that may possibly bring me back to endure it: treat it like a "raid mode". That changed my perspective somewhat because I have played many raid modes just for fun and all I get for it is generally gear. I have endured a lot to platinum certain games, maybe this one is worth another shot. Maybe.

Got the game on blackfriday and beat it today, I do wish there was a hard mode or NG+ but I still very much enjoyed it, I did find one of the guns to be too OP so gonna play it again without ever useing it.

@@RetroRaconteur hope so, its a very fun game I would love to see a horde style mode/ area or a boss rush mode, I wont be useing electric pylon driver next time to up the challance. I think NG + be amazing for a game like this.

Just some feedback. I don’t have much time either and I checked out this review to get info on returnal and the first few minutes all you did was talk about a bunch of games I haven’t played and have no interest in. I wanted info on returnal. Id stick to talking about the game you advertise. I tuned out after 3 minutes of waiting for info that never came.
@RetroRaconteur2 жыл бұрын
Hi Brent, always appreciate some constructive feedback! In my defense, I'll say that this was never positioned as a full review of the game on the title or thumbnail. It was more of a "my story with the game so far." I hadn't even beaten it at the point I made this video. It was really a reaction to a lot of the conversation that was happening online around the time about the structure & difficulty of the game. To me, understanding a little of Housemarque's history leading up to Returnal is key to understanding the game's structure and why certain gameplay decisions were made. That's why I included a bit about that in the beginning. For someone who was looking for purely a review of the Returnal and nothing more, I can see why you may have been disappointed. I will also add that I feel my intros have improved immensely since making this video and I feel I do a better job now of cutting out the fluff at the beginning and getting to the point. Anyway, I really do appreciate the feedback and you taking the time to comment!

I understand they want to stay true to the games title but damn is it repetitive. Instead of starting us from the beginning they should let us use the teleporter after beating each biome. I want to love this game but it's making so difficult.
@GigglingStoners Жыл бұрын
After 3rd biome you dont start at the begining. Also, you unlock shortcuts to later levels so you can quickly go to them if you die.

Returnal is one of my big gaming regrets. The game has a really bad story but the atmosphere is fantastic. Unfortunately, it just proved too much for me and I never got past the 2nd biome. Eventually, I realised I was getting too frustrated. I think sometimes people don't understand that "git gud" is a relative thing.
@JKSmith-qs2ii Жыл бұрын
What’s bad about the story? It’s subtle that’s for sure, but what makes it outright bad? I thinks it’s the kind of story that means different things for different people, I’ve heard many interpretations which makes it quite intriguing for me. And yeah the game is definitely not for everyone that’s fine.
@RylanStorm Жыл бұрын
@@JKSmith-qs2ii It's the same old "Oh, it was all a dream" trope that's been used so many times in the past. Whether it's "Bobby in the shower" from Dallas, or the entire cast of Lost being dead, or Selene hallucinating following some trauma.... It's just lazy.

It's definitely a matter of perspective. A good roguelike mindset to have is that you are supposed to lose a lot before you win. Only permanent upgrades are meant to be kept and items are boosts, not upgrades

I totally get why people would give up playing. I also understand why so many people who stick with it end up loving it. It's an interesting balance for sure.

You said the right words, The game does not respect your time… other than that is just a romantic point of view about “knowledge and mastering the mechanics of the game” … you can’t take this seriously when you work, have 2 kids and a wife… you have to make every minute count, and this game takes you back to zero after 2 or 3 hours of game…

Bro this game aint hard at all, once you learn the enemies and rooms ( this is not auto-generated, they only change in terms of positioning on the map). Give it like 7-8 hours to get used with the mechanics and that is it. You can do bio1-6 in one run under 5 hours (boss included)
