I agree WRT the game itself... but there is one loose hair: the marketing. In trailers and even on the box including Oersted, while not totally giving anything away, is still pretty spoilery. And I'm honestly not sure why they chose to do that as it takes away the delight at discovering the 8th chapter after the first 7.

In my opinion, the most amazing thing about this game is how it blends game types and gimmicks in each of it's stories, like Edo being RPG/infiltration, Western being RPG/management, Present being RPG/VsFighting, the game is like a love letter to video gaming. Each chapter has both clever design and things to say. So glad they decided to remake this masterpiece

I actually JUST beat this game last night and MY GOD this remake was everything i wanted it to be and more. The quality of life changes are wonderful, the voice acting can be hit or miss with a lot of people but i enjoyed it, the music is just LEGENDARY. When i played the orginal Fan translated SNES version on a Rom i loved this game but had some frsutrating moments with certain chapters, particularly with Edo Japan chapter. NOW i love all the chapters and what they contain. I want to go back and complete Obomaru's chapter without killing anyone. I want to go back and find EVERY hidden boss and defeat them for the hell of it. I want to find all the secrets and expirience them for myself. Thats how much this remake means to me now. It's also added some extra mini games and story bits that make the overall expirience so much better then the original SNES version. It's the same story but improved in a lot of ways. My personal Hope is Square sees Live a Live as a potential new series for Experimentation, which is what this game was originally. They could market this game as giving new employees a chance to make new bite sized stories and more.

One interesting thing to note is that every chapter is based on some popular media of the genre involved, at least per some interviews surrounding the original which was itself a bit of a skunkworks project. Far Future is probably the easiest to identify combining aspects of 2000 (HAL) and Alien (the Behemoth). Or current day with Masaru basically being a Street Fighter main. The big boi in Imperial China was called Sammo in the fan translation because, well... he is both big and fast and derived from Sammo Hung's old Hong Kong action flicks (which are amazing and you should watch them because he is big and fast and how does he bend like that?). Coupled with Yoko Shimomura rocking like 8 different musical themes... but given her work on stuff like Street Fighter 2 itself and many, many more after of course she did. I really love this game and this remaster.

Live A Live was already easily one of my top five favorite RPGs of all time. Perhaps my second favorite, next only to Octopath Traveler. So when I found out that my second favorite RPG was being remade in the style of my first favorite, and I saw that trailer for the first time, I damn near cried. I must have replayed the trailer half a dozen times before I could stave off the urge to throw money at my screen. I first played the original back in 2005. I was 16. That was more than half my life ago. But playing the remake, I feel like I'm 16 again. Despite the story being nearly identical, the game itself feels brand new, as it should, and it may very well reclaim that number one spot for me. I still love Octopath to no end, but I think a fresh coat of paint is exactly what Live A Live needed after going nearly 30 years without any sort of rerelease whatsoever.

I’m excited for a new generation to experience the Middle Ages chapter (if you know you know). I’m surprised to hear you don’t have to finish chapters before moving on to the next, I guess that was one of the flaws of the original. The Edo Japan chapter was always one of my favorites, I always loved how you can traverse the whole castle without killing anyone, or satisfy your blood-thirst and kill all 100 of the guards. I've played ALMOST all of the SNES original (and am currently replaying it with the intention of finishing it for real this time) and it honestly just blows me away how creative and unique it is. It almost feels like every single aspect of Live A Live was built at least in part with the express intention of interrogating and expanding what a JRPG can even BE. The combat system is fascinating and enjoyable, existing in the same ballpark as SRPGs and... Mystery Dungeon game combat? but that in practice doesn't feel quite like either. The replacement of an MP system with variable charge times for different moves allows for spam-discouraging drawbacks to powerful abilities without the risk of making the player stingy to use anything at all besides each character's basic attack, and interacts well with the tactical spatial elements to the combat. Of course, the game's calling card is the myriad different scenarios, like an anthology of JRPG short stories across wildly different time periods and parts of the world. What's especially fascinating is that, especially for 1994, absolutely NONE of the base scenario options take place in "standard" JRPG settings, and when you unlock the chapter that DOES... well, let's just say it makes up for that by being nonstandard in other ways. Each chapter also has a unique gameplay structure, from Twilight of Edo's ridiculously-dense stealth mission that offers a ton of freedom as to how exactly you want to play it, to the Wild West's emphasis on light puzzle elements through which you try to debuff the scenario boss fight as much as possible before it starts (or do nothing and flex by taking down the boss at full power), to the Distant Future's nearly-combatless spooky psychological survival horror adventure game atmosphere. Live A Live was honestly really ahead of its time in terms of just how much, and how purposefully, it pushed the boundaries of its genre (and, in some ways, of video games in general), and I'm really glad the remake is finally earning the game some long-overdue time in the limelight.

Live A Live is a good RPG, I could say that it is a good RPG to start in the genre, the only problem that I see with this remake is the bad localization/translation, since it's wrong they added things that neither in the japanese version nor in the original script say, it's enough to see how they ruined the only dialogue of Pogo. I hope the fans manage to make a patch correcting that mistranslation, each chapter has its charm and you want to read more about the characters, and that finishing the first 6 chapters unlocks two more chapters that make the union of all the previous chapters, if you are observant you will see that a name is repeated. I really recommend the game either in its Super Famicom version (there is an English patch made by fans) or the Switch version, but as I said the dialogues are wrong they did a bad job of translating and even added dialogues that you can't hear or see if you put the game in Japanese, from then on Live A Live is a beautiful game that deserves to be recognized, since the director of this game was in Chrono Trigger and Parasite Eve

The change they made to Pogo's dialogue in that scene is so bizarre too. It not only buries a lot of the significance of the line, the connection between language and that moment by turning that line into what sounds like a scream, the change is also for no discernable purpose other than to add...realism? Maybe? Not that I'm a fan of most of the other changes I've seen, but I at least understood their purpose. Most of the other changes were either to alter/censor content people might find objectionable (any potential negative portrayals of any sexuality as well as many of the references to women that could be construed as demeaning) or were designed to be witty in some way. You lose something I think with these changes in terms of worldbuilding and understanding the source material and would rather these changes not be made, but I understand the purpose at least. But the Pogo change. What does this even do? It adds needless confusion and ambiguity to something that's honestly kind of cute and even a little thoughtful. It honestly baffles me, and I don't understand why this change was made. I really don't.

@@OnlineVideoSurfer one reason may be that they did not understand the word, love, in Japanese あい it is because he was not a translator with time or that he understood the kanjis well since if you put あい it is understood as Aie~ the translator did not understand this, I know it's very silly but in the final scene if you chose Pogo he shouts Love, means Odio = Hate. Since even the people of Square took this word in Spanish from Hate, so there you have the meaning of why they failed in a simple message the translator, because it is relevant that the word love was in the game, because it was facing Odio(Hate)

@@CharlyHyo I didn't want to assume they just didn't know/made an error, but that explanation does make sense. And it's another layer of meaning that gets muddled due to this error/change as well.

i would joke about this getting remade. if I'm on twitter or facebook and there is SquareEnix news, "oh that is cool but can we get Live a Live, Bahamut Lagoon and Rudra no Hihou?"(i only played those ones) and wow. this is unespected.

Thank you for your review, sir. LAL has always been my favorite game from I played it.. a fantastic JRPG, very modern to be released in 1994 to then have this remake. It surprises me that various types of games are born from a JRPG as a concept. I know it's not so long, but it's one of those games you have to try in your life for how peculiar it is. It really has the makings of becoming a cult like a final fantasy (of the loved ones) or an earthbound in my opinion. He has his flaws, yes, but without him many of the games that came after would never have existed, such as Chrono trigger or Undertale. It goes without saying that this blond in my pic is one of my favorite characters as well as one of the most interesting of the whole game as a concept of "protagonist". (I won't give you too many spoilers hehe) I am so pleased that this rare little gem is gaining recognition among the masses. It really deserves so much love and devotion for how much it excites and carries a wonderful message at the end of the game. -Best regards form a boy, a big fan of Oersted, who likes to play him around youtube and beyond.

I'm not one for dialouge heavy or visual novel type games but the distant future chapter really surprised me and I appreciated the voice acting

ONLY problem I had was the robot's walk speed. Seriously why. Also, the Wild West dialog is probably some of the best dialog I've seen written in an RPG ever and equally well voice acted. I want more games with writing like that.

It didn’t shock me. It’s good gaming that can’t be duplicated. They will try, but Square and Nintendo getting back together is amazing! This game inspired a lot others after it.
