I'm old (50). What I need to do is recognize that RPG doesn't mean the same thing as it meant when I first started playing them 40 years ago. So I look at something like Borderlands 2, and I think it's just a pure FPS. In the year 2000, I was playing games like Baldur's Gate and Planescape, which really felt like the tabletop games I was used to. But also playing Unreal, Starcraft, Unreal Tournament, and those all felt like specifically FPS, or RTS games. But then they started taking elements of RPGs, like character creation, and integrating that into games with FPS mechanics. So, for me, I'd say "no, this isn't an RPG, it's an action game", but I'm realizing that my idea of RPGs is kinda antiquated, and now covers more than just the tabletop stuff.
@arenas46414 күн бұрын
Calling Borderlands 2 rpg is kind of a stretch imo

Im with you, I dont think your definition is antiquated. Most of these newer games are action or fps games with RPG elements.
@Childofbhaal4 күн бұрын
My experiences with tabletop D&D were basically action adventure games. I never role played or delved into my character like that. My dad would DM modules for me and my brother and cousins and we’d go kill stuff, complete a quest and get EXP and gear. I personally don’t know why games have to have such deep sim role play elements. I just want to quest and level and power up and fight cool things.
@sydhamelin12654 күн бұрын
@ Yeah, it really is. It's like any game where you unlock skills is now called an rpg.
@sydhamelin12654 күн бұрын
@ Exactly. Even Cyberpunk, to me, feels more like an FPS than an RPG. Granted there are a ton more build mechanics. One thing, for me, that's crucial, is in an RPG, YOU control their personality. In Cyberpunk, you're always V. That's one thing that hit me, when I found out you were playing an already created personality.

I have no Idea how many hours I played the first one and am surprised that none of them made your list (well except for Gothic 3^^). If you never played them, I highly recommend you try at least 1 and 2. Yes they're old and extremely clunky, but worth your time. And then very quick: Oblivion over Skyrim, Mass Effect 1 over 2, love Vampyr's uniqueness and the first Risen (from the team that brought us Gothic) is way up high on the list as well. And Fallout... my first contact with the series was the very first one that I played on my brother's PC. The first I truly played was FO 4. It was hard to go back to 3 and New Vegas. I tried, but I was already spoiled by modern graphics and tbh, I'm not playing FO 4 because it's an RPG. I play it for the sandbox. Anyway, thanks for another great video. AI has never been able to make a good script, because it’s incapable of making anything original. 100% agree with KoTOR 2 above 1! Matty, based on this list you need to try Roguetrader, you'll adore it for sure!

Very solid list. Personally, I would’ve put Witcher 3 and Mass Effect 2 a little higher on there, but still a very solid list overall. Kudos!

I absolutely loved KOTOR 1 and 2. Then you mentioned Fable: The Lost Chapters. I was probably around 10 or 11 when it released. I didnt know about it, i was used to nintendo games. I didnt have an xbox when it released i just remember hearing a friend talk about how you could be good or evil, and what you chose dictated your appearance and how the public would treat you and that felt so alien to me in a video game. Once i finally got it i fell in love. The story and the music are things i still look back on very fondly after 20 years

I can’t stop playing new Vegas. It’s wild to believe that it’s considered unfinished, had super crazy crunch time to finish, is a buggy mess if you are a console player, some funky shooting mechanics (although it is super satisfying to headshot with the anti material rifle)but manages to be better than 99.9 percent of games out there. So many solutions. So many playstyles that actually affect the gameplay in hundreds of ways. They took a strong crpg and mad it an fps. Right now im playing a crit build cowboy with high speech and does very good deeds. My next playthrough im going to play a character like Raoh from fist of the North Star. Level up my unarmed, get first of the north roar, and level up my speech enough to have terrifying presence. Limitless possibilities

As a lifelong JRPG fan (see avatar), I've only played a handful of WRPGs, primarily Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Fallout/Skyrim. When I think of "top 30 RPGs of all time", my list would be full of spiky-haired anime swordsman (see avatar), so it's really cool to see a list so full of stuff I've never played.

My personal top 10ish: 12-10. The Banner Saga trilogy 9. Dragon Age Origins 8. Sunless Skies 7. Thronebreaker 6. Mass Effect 2 5. Undertale 4. Planescape Torment 3. Sunless Sea 2. Disco Elysium 1. The Witcher 3 (I haven't finished BG3 or Elden Ring yet, but both of them have a high chance of making the top 10, if not the top 5.)

The witcher 3 is pretty shallow in it rpgs mechanis especially compare to Disco elysium... It's more of a action adventure with rpg mechanics and petty bad combat

Awesome list Matty - I pretty much agree, we were eating good a decade+ ago - Now AAA companies are more into live service and microtransactions haha... Games like Cyberpunk and BG3 are gems that only come along rarely these days... And good shout with Wasteland 3 - I loved that one...

It makes me incredibly sad that people outside of Europe are so completely unfamiliar with the Gothic series (especially parts 1 and 2) and have never been given the opportunity to experience an open world RPGs that many consider to be the most immersive video games ever made. These games were so much ahead of their time!

So you're comments on setting in rocking chair and playing skyrim by the fire really hit for me. I spent 9 months off grid living while I clear cut some acreage for a guy I worked for, and I spent many nights sitting by the campfire playing skyrim on my switch and fetch with my dog.

A few years ago I always had a joke where I say “Colin Moriarty!” In a Irish accent but never knew why so when you started working with Colin I would always say that but not know why… then I played Fallout 3 and remembered there is the character “COLIN MORIARTY!!” And it all made sense again… and I like to trick that was the universe giving you a sign Matty. Go work for Colin…. ❤

Thank you for this list. I completely forgot to play Kingdom of Amalur Re-Reckoning. I believe they added a lot of content since the initial release. I wish-listed it on steam and will play it again when it goes on sale.

Skyrim was the game that opened my eyes to the genre. To the point my first order of business was to go back and Play Oblivion and then Morrowind and I feel pretty much the same way you do about Morrowind lol. I'm curious how the list will change as we get the next two obsidian RPGs this year and whenever Clockwork Revolution comes out.
@balancedgaming21035 күн бұрын
I just gotta say thank you for shouting out Kingdoms of Amalur. I just feel like it didn't get enough attention, at launch or re-release. Highly recommend for those of you who haven't played it yet! Edit 1- Vampyr is also underrated like you said and I wish Fable 2 was playable somewhere other than on the 360.

Gods to be a 10 year old kid in 2005 again nd playing KotoR I&II on the original Xbox again... I'd give anything to go back and relive it and experience it for the first time again. Or back to 2008 and Mass Effect, or '09 and Dragon Age Origins, or '06 and Oblivion, back to 11th grade when Skyrim released. We had the best childhood, a childhood like ours with the games and culture and incremental advancements in technology will just never been seen again. I raise my glass to a time I am forever grateful to have lived through and been shaped by.

2/3 of this list are games that are great if you played them in their era. They aged poorly and are high up in people`s tier lists only because of the nostalgia. But we do not live in those days anymore and objectively looking at most of these games you realize you have better options that do not hurt your eyes when you look at them. But I know, I know, nostalgia is a powerful tool. I get it. I myself have my own top 30 with 2/3 ugly-ass nostalgia baits.
@Leo-Marconda6 күн бұрын
While nostalgia may be applicable in some cases, that's not always the case. I've played plenty of classics (for the first time, so no nostalgia) in the past couple of years, and many of them ended up in my favorite games list. It really boils down to the gamer's tolerance, and if they can look past the "dated" visuals and enjoy what these games' qualities are. I happen to be one of those gamers. As such, gaming is highly subjective.
@cryfest5 күн бұрын
Not counting subjective rankings, there sure have been many great RPGs.
