Sold mine to a friend at work for a big discount who expressed dismay that their old N64 won't work on their new tv. I still have an RT5X pro and works great. No reason for me personally to get an RT4k but I can see it being useful for content creators and such who want high quality reference footage for b-roll and stuff like that.

Retrotink products are amazing. I have the OG Tink2x (the acrylic sandwich model). After getting out of the Navy and finding all my old consoles, it was (and still is) an excellent solution to connecting a pile of game consoles to a modern TV. I've since upgraded my TV, have a Retrotink 5X, and upgraded my video cables to component, but the 2X is a fantastic way to just get started when you have a bunch of composite video game consoles (and a VCR). No new cables to buy, no hardware mods, it just works great!

For people that mainly deals with 480i input (like ps2, gamecube) for IPS / OLED panels I strongly suggest other scalers that have motion adaptive deinterlacing (such as GBS Control) as Bob deinterlacing that 2X Pro has can cause SEVERE IMAGE RETENTION. It might or might not be curable depending on the severity but I would not take my chances.. Bob deinterlace doesn't cause image retention on VA and TN panel though, so just take this into consideration.
@MrAlexmbat
@MrAlexmbat 11 ай бұрын
that was a very rough lesson for me to learn, IPS displays won't retain it for more than a couple of hours on older models, but I'm not gonna test an OLED with it given they have a lower expected life span.
@emrexis
@emrexis 11 ай бұрын
@@MrAlexmbat yeah.. it happened on my IPS panel too and I also heard horror stories from people around the net :') such a shame since Bob deinterlace cause no lag and produce sharp image

Explain this in dummy terms for me😂 does severe image retention mean if I leave it paused for hours and come back to it the image will be burned into the pixels? Or if I’m playing a game that has a constant heads up display of health and ammo that will burn into the TV?

The discontinued RetroTINK 2X Multi-Format accepted 480p signals and just passed them through, and even 720p with experimental firmware that technically overclocked it. It became unnecessary with the release of the 5X Pro.

I just ordered this from Mike Chi a few days ago. My 2x-Mini's microUSB port kinda bit the dust so I opted for this one as a replacement (great product, gamed on it for 2-3 years). I'd go: - RTK 2X, if you own a pre-1999 console, and you just don't want to bother tinkering or you can't use one because of the reasons in the video; - RTK 5X, if you can step up, buy nice cables, tinker around with the settings, go beyond the basics, buy a medium to high-end OLED; - RTK 4K, only if you offer professional services, like digitalizing VHS tapes with the maximum quality you can achieve, if you earn money off consoles(not even old, like the Switch) streaming personally/in events, of if you are willing to spend thousands on high quality PVMs.

I was just watching a couple Simpsons season 4 eps from the DVD on my Sony E530 CRT monitor, by default it doesn't look to bad at all, ovviously much better than on an LCD, but when I fired up the Tink's scanline generator, it really increased the fidelity of the 576i video quality, it actually got rig of any image noise, gave it at least 3x resolution perception, so given how big of an improvment that was, I tried rendering it at 240p72hz (3x24hz), and it really took it up another notch in terms of IQ, the Simpsons DVD's @ 240p72hz look amazing, and I really like the scanline image qualty, it makes The Simpsons feel so much more authentic and nostalgic to watch, of course I could just watch it on a consumer CRT in 576i RGB, another great option, I even have a late 90s V-Flat curved Sony Trinitron 25" that can downscale/transcode RGB 480i/576i to 240p/288p on the fly, and it really does a nice job of it, it looks stunning, I love using it for DC and PS2 (those awsome M2 ports adn compilations look so much better in 240p vs the otherwise locked @ 480i NTSC or 576i PAL), but the scanlines are no where near as prominent as the E530 monitor with a SLG.

It's great for what it does but it unfortunately doesn't have the smoothing or sharp function. Where it sort if sits between the Sharp and Smooth of the Regular 2x Pro. I ended up just using it for my 6th Gen consoles for it's 480p pass through and ended up buying the regular 2x pro down the road for all my 5th Gen and earlier ones because of it. What is really weird is how it's product page has been removed from the Retrotink website and you have to go to a separate site if you want the firmware update files. Sorry if I don't have thing for rectangles, I guess. I don't think PAL GameCube does 480p, so that should still work on this? What about games that swap resolutions (Chrono Cross, etc.)? Will those be an issue? Edit: Oh, some TVs have a "mini-composite" input (TRRS). That'll have to do.

Given what you said, and what I have seen, it looks like it is just passing-through the 240p analog to the TV input. Ahh, heck yeah. One great thing about the RetroTINK-4K coming out is - most likely - a lot of used, but perfectly working upscalers - e.g. 2X-Pro - are going to be for sale, due to some people upgrading to the rt4k. Ebay / Facebook Market Place / Craig's List, etc. You'll be able to get one at a price lower than if you bought it new, there will be greater availability (no need to wait for them to get restocked!), and there are a ton of decent retro-gaming nerds who, no offense to anyone in particular, but people who probably won't try to scam you. So, I think RetroTINK-4K coming out is great news. With any luck, more people are going to get into the hobby, and that's a good thing. Great work, Bob, keep it up! question here. I've learned there is a big difference between a line doubler and resolution upscaler as I thought it was the same for a while. Does the tink2xpro upscale the resolution or just line double or both? I'm looking for something to upscale ps2 and/or gamecube games and from my understanding line doublers wouldn't help anything as it's for 2d pixel games.

You’re mostly correct and on the right track. For those consoles, you’d want the RetroTINK 5x or 4K, the OSSC or OSSC Pro, or make a GBS-C if you’re on a budget. More explanation in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipXJd6GIYs2CgZosi=I29zn3s2XuRGSEqz

Is there another less expensive alternative to the Retrotink 5x Pro to use 480p with PS2, Xbox and Wii? I was thinking of buying the Retrotink 2x Pro but the fact that it doesn't support 480p via component cable is a bit disappointing. Not a RT2X question, but on the topic of not upgrading: I have a RT5X and a 4K TV (not an OLED), but I also have an older TV that maxes out at 1080p. Will the RT5X look any better or have less lag on a TV where its native resolution is what the 5X is feeding it?
@RetroRGB

The lag should be within a few milliseconds of each other. And it might look shaper, but that’s totally depending on the panel. I don’t think it would be a big difference in either case. Good questions though!

What happens to PS2 games with 480p modes? Nothing shows up on the TV? If the 480p mode is not enabled on the game will it work in 480i? IDK how many games are 480p only. I thought most required a button press to enable it.
@RetroRGB

You have to manually enable 480p mode on all PS2 games, so as long as you don’t do that all will work. If you accidentally do, you’ll get no signal. It won’t hurt anything though.

My honest opinion, I actually kind of prefer how my LG C1 handles 240p over HDMI using the 2X's passthrough compared to the line doubling. It still isn't nearest neighbor and the scanline simulation doesn't work, but it looks better to me. Same with a cheap TCL that I don't recall the model number of. I'm sure there are flat panels out there I wouldn't feel that way about and I have a Dell CRT monitor that the line doubling works great with, though.

If the C1 is treating 240p like progressive, then it's not adding any lag...so it's a complete win! If you have the ability to run the 240p Test Suite, I'd give that a try to double check, but if it looks good, keep doing it :)
