Retrotink products are amazing. I have the OG Tink2x (the acrylic sandwich model). After getting out of the Navy and finding all my old consoles, it was (and still is) an excellent solution to connecting a pile of game consoles to a modern TV. I've since upgraded my TV, have a Retrotink 5X, and upgraded my video cables to component, but the 2X is a fantastic way to just get started when you have a bunch of composite video game consoles (and a VCR). No new cables to buy, no hardware mods, it just works great!

For people that mainly deals with 480i input (like ps2, gamecube) for IPS / OLED panels I strongly suggest other scalers that have motion adaptive deinterlacing (such as GBS Control) as Bob deinterlacing that 2X Pro has can cause SEVERE IMAGE RETENTION. It might or might not be curable depending on the severity but I would not take my chances.. Bob deinterlace doesn't cause image retention on VA and TN panel though, so just take this into consideration.
@MrAlexmbat11 ай бұрын
that was a very rough lesson for me to learn, IPS displays won't retain it for more than a couple of hours on older models, but I'm not gonna test an OLED with it given they have a lower expected life span.

Explain this in dummy terms for me😂 does severe image retention mean if I leave it paused for hours and come back to it the image will be burned into the pixels? Or if I’m playing a game that has a constant heads up display of health and ammo that will burn into the TV?

I was just watching a couple Simpsons season 4 eps from the DVD on my Sony E530 CRT monitor, by default it doesn't look to bad at all, ovviously much better than on an LCD, but when I fired up the Tink's scanline generator, it really increased the fidelity of the 576i video quality, it actually got rig of any image noise, gave it at least 3x resolution perception, so given how big of an improvment that was, I tried rendering it at 240p72hz (3x24hz), and it really took it up another notch in terms of IQ, the Simpsons DVD's @ 240p72hz look amazing, and I really like the scanline image qualty, it makes The Simpsons feel so much more authentic and nostalgic to watch, of course I could just watch it on a consumer CRT in 576i RGB, another great option, I even have a late 90s V-Flat curved Sony Trinitron 25" that can downscale/transcode RGB 480i/576i to 240p/288p on the fly, and it really does a nice job of it, it looks stunning, I love using it for DC and PS2 (those awsome M2 ports adn compilations look so much better in 240p vs the otherwise locked @ 480i NTSC or 576i PAL), but the scanlines are no where near as prominent as the E530 monitor with a SLG.

Retro consoles that don't support 480p will connect directly to a Trinitron CRT via HD Retrovision component video cables. No scaler is necessary at all. Oh! You should have specified it's an HD CRT. And yes, that's an excellent solution. Light gun games won't work, but if you add basic scanlines, 240p will look exactly as it should. You'd just need the final 1.x firmware for the RetroTINK 5x...but TINK firmware is NOT locked, so even if you get one with a newer firmware, just load the older one and set it to 540p. Super easy. ...but if you don't own a CRT yet, just get ANY regular CRT and you won't need a scaler. This video has tons of info: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipXJd6GIYs2CgZo

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question. I have a ps2 with component cables and a gamecube with composite cables. Would the RT2xPro work well for me? Would you recommend it?
@RetroRGB7 ай бұрын
While they would work, the RT2x isn’t the best choice. I’d suggest a GBS-C or RT5x. And I’d also get component cables for the GameCube as most games support 480p. It’ll be a massive upgrade from composite video.
@vinceruvolo13727 ай бұрын
@@RetroRGB I think for me the GBS-C is above my ability. The Open Source Scan Converter, seemed like an option, but it doesn’t support composite cables. And is larger in size. I’m thinking it would be best to get component gamecube cables and then get the RT2xPro?
@RetroRGB6 ай бұрын
No, because once again, most GC games are 480p. Get a Carby for the Gamecube and just connect it direct to your TV: retrorgb.link/sagcarby For PS2, maybe get a pre-made GBS-C?

@RetroRGB11 ай бұрын
My opinion: If you’re on a budget, get the 2X Pro and S-Video cables (the same set will work with both consoles) It’ll be great. …but if you have a bit more to spend, get the RT5x, S-Video cables for the N64 and RGB SCART for the SNES. My honest opinion, I actually kind of prefer how my LG C1 handles 240p over HDMI using the 2X's passthrough compared to the line doubling. It still isn't nearest neighbor and the scanline simulation doesn't work, but it looks better to me. Same with a cheap TCL that I don't recall the model number of. I'm sure there are flat panels out there I wouldn't feel that way about and I have a Dell CRT monitor that the line doubling works great with, though.
@RetroRGB11 ай бұрын
If the C1 is treating 240p like progressive, then it's not adding any lag...so it's a complete win! If you have the ability to run the 240p Test Suite, I'd give that a try to double check, but if it looks good, keep doing it :)
@SpookySkellyGurl11 ай бұрын
@@RetroRGB well at this point it's academic since I have the 5X, but at the time I used the info button on the remote and both TVs said they were receiving 240p instead of 480i. I might try the test suite if I think about it when I'm not busy though.
@RetroRGB11 ай бұрын
That’s actually normal - Even PVM & BVM CRT’s say “480i” when a 15KHz signal was detected. The RT5x is such an awesome solution, direct 240p doesn’t matter anymore though :)

For Ps2 mainly, is there a need for an rgb cable with a 480i/480p switch on it similar to the retrogamingcables dreamcast cable? This is the other problem console (not as bad as Dreamcast). I know the retrotink 4k fixes this, but it seems you are out of luck if you want an all in one solution that is affordable for Ps2 only.

The resolution switching is done via software in-game, so there's no switch needed on the output side - Just pick up these cables and you're good to go with ANY scaler: amzn.to/47f3Pb8

Thanks for the response. My issue with the ps2 is I have a 20m2mdu pvm that only do 240p/480i. So, there is a few 480p, 720p, and 1080i games that I am out of luck on if I want to keep playing on my pvm. I feel like ps2 looks crappy upscaled, rather go backwards to 240p than forwards to 1080p, 1440p, 4k with black bars on sides. So, is tink 2x pro line doubled into the gbs aio to 480p, then downscaled to 240p, my best affordable option to cover most ps2 games on my 20m2mdu pvm? Or should I just accept 480i for ps2 and climb out of this rabbit hole in this case?
@RetroRGB10 ай бұрын
My opinion: CRT’s are the only displays that can properly show 480i. So I embrace how PS2 looks on it and only enable 480p on PS2 games that natively support it. Another (strong) opinion: That’s an AWESOME PVM. Enjoy it :)

Yes, but the better the scaler, the better it will look. I love the RT2x - It might not be the best scaler, but it’s zero lag and that smoothing option looks great for N64. The RetroTINK 5x and 4K are better, but cost a lot more. Maybe take a look at the price and features of each and see which fits your setup and budget best?

The one downside to the 2X Pro is that some TVs have lag at 480p even in game mode. A couple different cheap LG TVs I have exhibit this with the Carby and the RT2X Pro. Not the RetroTINK's fault of course, but it is a caveat for some cheap TVs.

You’d want to go direct into the RT5x and used its advanced analog video processing. Going to the RT2x first would actually lower the quality, as it couldn’t do custom timings properly.
