you're correct with the background having 4 colours. but, the sprites on the gameboy have only 3 colours (one is sacrificed for transparency). if you were making an actual gameboy game, you could select which colour that is.

The game boy homebrew scene is pretty active. Here's a challenge if you need a new video idea: Make a real game boy game out of it. 3 major options: GB Studio (easy, no code, limited), GBDK-2020 (more advanced, but more capabilities), and RGBDS (assembly, very difficult, but the most capable). GBDK is my preference. Each are free, and can compile real Game Boy ROM Files.

zgb is also an option. it's easier to code for than rgbds alone (it's in C and it used gbdk as a base, but is more powerful than gb studio because, quite simply, any system that is easier to use will be less powerful than code).

amazing video! but quick tip for your next game : Instead of using tiled backgrounds I suppose using tilemaps and autotile. Also dont use global Variables for monster health!!! Use local Variables.

That really looked amazing! With only 4 colors available you have to make every pixel count and you did a great job on those visuals. The only thing missing are some sounds. BFXR could be a good source for that. Good job!

Nice video, I have to say you that your pixel art was nice, can I ask how did you learn to draw them? Currently I am struggling in that aspect. Also regarding game engines can I recommend GB STUDIO for game boy games in the future, it is free and easy to learn and use and it is coded to use GB hardware. As for your future projects can I recommend GODOT, it is an open source game engine, it will be harder to learn compared to construct but you will not be limited with it. Also if you don't mind can I recommend to do a fighting game in the future. P.S. BTW GB only has 2 button

Why isn't this on a real Gameboy? Because a Gameboy only has two buttons on it and because you made it to where he can punch, place and jump but that would require three buttons unless your pressing the select button to swap modes.

You should have made the camera facing down like the legend of Zelda Link’s Awakening, so it’s like a free roam kind of game, so it’s more similar to the actual Minecraft, so enemies can come out of nowhere at night and villagers and villages in a 2D game on the game boy but its 3D, it just would have been way better like that. Sprites on the Gameboy can't use the dark green only "black" light green and "white". Dark green is only for the backgrounds And can only have 10 sprites on screen so your 5 invt slots and player are 6 So you can only have 4 more sprites on screen

Only thing making this 'gameboy' is the shades of green and the resolution and even then you can't use all shades on the sprites, to do that on real hardware requires overlapping sprites that'll cause flicker if not done right. The dragon is also rather long for a device that can only handle 10 sprites in a row before being incompatible of rendering more. How does a video like this get so many views? it's not even on the gameboy!

If memory serves, gameboy games were 240x160, which wasn't perfectly square, it was a 3:2 ratio rather than a 4:3 ratio which the NES... Didn't use, at least NTSC NES didn't use a 4:3 ratio. Nintendo consoles are so fine and normal.

Exactly all he did was use game boy colors and pixel art if it was a real game boy it would need to fit all the data. Make the screen to size, and snap everything to a pixel( nothing can be perfectly smooth on the game boy because the screen has such low pixels.)
