MS-DOS is my favourite for me. Mostly because it is the one I played the most and I know the controls are spot-on. Very tense and exciting platforming action. Then, my second favourite would be the SNES version that kind of feels a bit like what PoP2 should have been.

Some releases definitely had superior potential with the hardware at hand, but often the artistic choices in rendering were rather poor, noisy/dirty, compared to the most minimalistic rendering of MS-DOS/PC. The animation also seems inferior in some of them. Game-boy's version and SNES versions were particularly impressive, although the character itself in SNES was a bit over-defined/rendered. Game-boy's even makes me wonder if that thing was more advanced in capabilities than the original 8-bit NES (non-S). How the torches light the scenario was quite a masterful contrast with the noisier over-rendering of some other releases, and better than the plain-flat rendering on PC.

Apple II might seem the worst from today's standards but it was what they had for the Apple II and that was how Prince of Persia was born, plus it's quite reminiscent of the DOS graphics we all know and love. The cartoony graphics of GB and GBC don't really fit the aesthetics of a PoP game. The Amstrad CPC does look pretty choppy without all of the frames, and all the guards are the same colours. The SAM Coupe is more of a poor man's version of the DOS version, though I was surprised to learn how the makers painstakingly transfered each frame from the DOS version by hand. I would would rank the NES version dead bottom due to the hideous purple hue and the scrolling. The SMS/GG version is well textured and fluid for what it is, but doesn't make the best of the 64 colour palette. The Atari ST has a bit too much blue and yellow, but otherwise makes good use of shading. Pity they only had one colour scheme for the guards. In fact one of the wall textures of that ST port made it into the Genesis version. Out of all the Japanese versions, I'd say the Sega CD version is easy on the eyes. The Mac graphics are very crisp and clear. Undeniably the Gensis graphics are among the best with a fabulous use of rich colour and texture, but once again only one colour scheme for the guards. The SNES takes a different direction, but really outdoes itself, maybe a bit more than the Genesis version. I don't really count anything that reuses the Sands of Time graphics to be impressive or fit to be among the ports, it just feels non-authentic.

The Commodore 64 homebrew is worth checking out. Prince of Persia was a revolutionary game. First time I saw a character running across the screen that looked like an actual person in a video game. Karateka had some smooth animation but this took it to a whole other level. The backgrounds and lighting were amazing. It had its fair share of impressive ports also. It’s tough to rank them all like you pulled off.

I played the Master System version the most and i really enjoyed it. The animation was fantastic and was very smooth, easily my favourite 8-Bit version of Prince of Persia.

Hey, even with the worst graphics considering all the versions that were made for this classic version, the original Apple II version has, still, one of the best and most advanced graphics displayed on the system. It's a miracle for such an old hardware.

It is subjective honestly another plus for it's graphics is it appears to have more animation compared to some others, at least among the other 8 bit computer/consoles versions.

A lot of ports try to upgrade the look of the game since the Apple II was some pretty limited hardware, but since the original used actual rotoscoping for character animations, the graphics of these ports can be quite a mixed bag. Fortunately, they mostly knew not to mess with the actual game design.

Yeah, it seems like a lot of the "upgraded" sprites that give him baggy pants and a turban have redrawing errors that make the animation look jerky or glitchy. I think even PoP2 suffered from this.

4:55 Um, _WHAT‽_ These next few are the WORST ones of all with those nauseatingly rough textures. 🤢 DOS (and the identical Amiga) are my _PoP_ due to nostalgia but the Mac looks so clean and the SNES is top-notch with the cave and the bumpb-mapped 3D bricks. 👍 (I like the blueish-purple color of the NES, but it just doesn't fit in this game.)

Those textures are in no way "nauseatingly rough." They add an extra layer of grime and grit to the game's aesthetic, so there's no need for that emoji. And in what way doesn't the blueish-purple color of the NES not fit in this game? You can't just say things like that without a proper explanation and expect people to swallow it down with no problem. I'd argue that that color emphasizes the mystical, Middle Eastern setting of the game.

Gotta go with the SNES version here. Not only did it extend each level, but the soundtrack was awesome, plenty of boss battles and instead 12 levels? You got 20. It was bar none the definitive way to experience the game.

more Textures Colors and clothing on the main Character doesn't mean better graphics for me, the PC DOS version is so CLEAN and TIDY and uses the ORIGINAL DESIGN for the Hero.. i like it a Lot better than the others saving the original appleII

I first played this game on PC-DOS, then Sega Genesis/Megadrive, but could only beat it on the modern 3D version (played on an android phone rather than consoles). There's a lot of nostalgia associated with the PC version, but the modern remake is my favorite when it comes to Graphics!

PC98, X68000 and FM Towns version looks the best. Arsys really gave the game a unique visual style. It even preceded the way more primitive DOS port! The Macintosh version is a close second place.

Ranking the Apple II version-- the original version-- of Prince of Persia as last on the list isn't quite fair: especially when people consider that this was one of the first games to use rotoscoping animation so that the movents and combat felt more realistic for the time. The Apple II version might not have aged well by today's (somewhat ridiculously high) standards, but it served as the foundation for the many subsequent ports and remakes.

I grew up with the Sega Master System version. It's still my favourite version to play. Graphics wise it's not as spectacular as the others, but I love its atmosphere. The musical jingle when you get the sword or when Shadowman appears always sounded great to me.

The ST version is surprisingly gorgeous given the 16 colour limit. The artist makes it look like there's an actual light source. I just assumed the Amiga version was as ST port but it seems the Amiga version was ported from the pc version

For me its always gonna be a hard choice between Sega CD and SNES. Sega CD was the first version I played, but SNES is like a remix, with new levels as well as a bunch of reworked ones. But the Sega CD has that music and those anime cutscenes so... I dunno.... MS-DOS is a contender but I tend to feel like that one is for purists who want an idea what the Apple II was like but without having to get an actual Apple II. But its funny to me how the Prince kinda looks like just some dork in older versions and doesn't look arabian until the versions that give him a Turban and vest.

As a reminder, graphics don't always equal quality. But I'm glad to see the Super Nintendo version de-thrown the Genesis version, as it's a far better game, made by a company who had a lot of quality titles back in the day. And believe me when I say: "Back in the day".

Theres no worst in this world. This term is too subjective to begin with. All of them have their pro and cons. Each game have its limited graphics, but give a experience for each everyone who played at least one of their port once. Graphics doesn't really matter at all. Like if I would play the original Apple ][ version, I wouldn't mind. If I would play the Mac one, I wouldn't mind. If I would play the Sega CD one, I wouldn't mind. If it is still playable, I would play it without thinking about the graphics. Each POP give their charm and that's the most matter.

I’m quite fond of the Apple II original. Yeah it’s simplistic and there’s only, what, three colors to work with, but it has a charm to it. Best looking one is Game Gear imo

If I pick my top best ports for POP, it’ll be: For Computers it’s Amiga and DOS. For handhelds it’s GBC and Game Gear. For 16 but consoles it’s SNES and Genesis.

It's weird to me that the Sega Genesis(Megadrive) version is better than the Sega CD, but it is. You would think the Sega CD would have gone all in on the extra storage but they seemed to go backwards. Anyways, the SNES version looked wonderful and detailed and deserved the win!

Likely as the Mega Drive cart vesion was released a year later the Mega-CD only added scaling abilities and a faster cpu. The Mega-CD version is considered the better port of the game though as it plays a lot better, the Apple II is still of course the best version overall but the worst graphically.

I@m confused about Amiga graphics chosen as being inferior to pc graphics. The only difference is that Amiga version has higher resolution (320x256) than the pc one (320x200). The assets used and number of colors look the same.

In my opinion, the Macintosh Color is the machine that has the prettiest version. Too bad I have no way to emulate it. On the other hand, I don't like the graphics of the SNES version; yes... I know it's an unpopular opinion.

The Macintosh version is the nicest, it sticks to the original style, yet 2x as sharp. Too bad you don't show the opening sequence, as that should be part of a proper comparison. I think the Amstrad CPC is really good on a CRT, unlike emulation, and also has the opening sequence done way better than say DOS. So it deserves a higher position. The Mega Drive version I dislike, it looks like it had sex with Xenon Megablast or GODS.

I prefer the Amiga version, but I also like the original Apple II, Turbografx CD, Sharp X68000, and Sega Genesis versions. I like it the Xbox360/PS3 version too, but this is a totally different game in 3D. It is not comparable to the 2D versions. This is my order of preference from the worst to the best! J2ME -- Simply awful Macintosh -- This is terrible, sterile, looks like a flash game Gameboy -- Oh no! I don't like monochrome Amstrad CPC -- Omg, I went blind! Gameboy Color -- Too low resolution Game Gear -- I hate that ground Master System -- See the previous one Apple II - The original one. Nice minimalist graphics NES - Weird colors, but it's not that bad. The screen flashings are really bad. NEC PC-98 -- Ugly FM Towns -- Ugly (a bit better than the NEC) Sam Coupe - Quite correct Super Nintendo -- The graphics are very diferent, but it is not a bad one Sega CD -- Shame, the Genesis version is better (despite that Sega CD is also a Genesis plus a CD drive) Turbografx CD -- It looks quite good Sharp X68000 - Looks nice, the best one from the group of this graphics style Sega Genesis -- The best consol version Atari ST -- The Amiga version plus some eye candy (which didn't make it any better) PC DOS - Almost the Amiga version, but the game area is narrower. Amiga -- The perfect one! Xbox360/PS3 -- I like this one too, but this is in another league

The Mac version came out later than most of those versions. The Amiga ECS, Atari ST and DOS VGA versions were limited in colors but Amiga AGA, Atari STe and DOS VGA versions done when the Mac one was done could have looked as good.

The NES version has a very saturated blueish-purple color which I like but just doesn't fit in this game. Also, the NES version has different level layouts and fewer levels (or at least that's what I remember from playing it many years ago 🤔).

I didn't know there were so many releases. I thought it was simply above the hardware capabilities of something like Apple ][, despite Karateka being similar. I thought Karateka already squeezed all of Apple ]['s hardware juices, and something more elaborate and longer like PoP required at least a PC or something at a similar level/generation of hardware.

The Mac version is technically more advanced but I am not keen on that style, it gives everything a flat appearance. It's pretty, but doesn't feel right. The SNES has very detailed and colourful graphics, but it has a pixelated appearance, particularly on the player character, which I find off-putting. I don't like the sound either.
