This is relative to hip anteversion, which is within 8 to 15 degrees (normal). If it's less than 8 degrees, that is indicative of a retroverted hip. In addition, out-toeing (tibial torsion) is over 18 degrees. For anteversion, you can perform the Craig's test, which is also known as Ryder method.

Now I want to learn more about that test to determine whether retroversion is muscular or structural 😳

Can you do a video about anteverted hips or feet? I was extremely pigeon-toed as a child and even as a teen/young adult. When I used to sit with my legs straight out, my feet and hips would turn in. It used to cause me a lot of knee pain and made me roll in on the arches of my feet. Orthotic insoles helped straighten me out a bit, but I still have poor external rotation in my hips. It's gotten better since I started taking ballet classes and strengthening the muscles of my hips and they no longer toe in if I'm putting my legs straight ahead. I would like to see if there's any other things I can do to improve my external rotation.

I have this but they don't turn in so much when I run - they stay angled out. I'm wondering if it's contributed to the bad bunions I have. I'm 54 and started treadmill running 3 years ago (just jogging pace). I concentrate on turning my legs in when I land. I've made huge improvements - I can run 40 mins a day with very little if any pain but still want to improve more. For 6 months or so I slowly worked into barefoot shoes and can finally run 2.5 miles, pain free in them, but still want to go farther, w/o pain. I'm thinking I need more strength training on hammies, glutes, and IT band. Can't afford a trainer so trying to DIY.

Now I don't know if I need to fix this or not. When I was 10ish I sprained my left ankle and didn't tell anyone at camp. Later that day we were playing soccer and the only way to make it not hurt too much was to turn my foot out. Ever since my feet have turned out. Until I hit my 20s I kept spraining and restraining both ankles. Now in my early 30s, my ankles are finally alright, but my knees are causing a ton of problems. I'm following Bob's and Brad's advice for fixing those and was thinking to try and fix my introverted feet while I was at it, but I have no clue if it needs to be done. I guess I'll just work on strengthening my hip muscles, (which I'm doing already for my knees), and it'll either correct itself or not.

Thank you forc the Video. I have dealt with pain and instability of my hip and left leg for a very long time. I had to quite my job as a bike messenger due to the fact that my foot felt twisted as well as my hip. I have seen multiple doctors foot back knee hip with no luck. Have been told my kneecis fine but when ever I put weight on the knee it pops and cracks and fells like it's off track. I made a doctor preform a CT scan of hip and he will not give me all the angles but he says that my version issues are not that severe, they would not looking my lower leg as a mentioned a condition called missarable mililignment. Any ways my angle is zero and doc says supposed to be 20 25 degrees also says I have Acetabular anterversion but would not give me the measurement. I Fell like if I lean to my left side while walking and twist right hip out to the front that my left foot tracks correctly and I get the proper push off and knee fells like it's in alignment. Of course this is not practical at all. Mra shoes small tear in my labram and I had major impengment going on. Well it was not a small tear as they preformed a Debriedment of the labram. I am trying to get a second opinion out of network at Mayo. I really hope that the DR at Mayo has answers and shoes some empathy forc what I have been going though. Thank you

A CT scan can determine the angles of the femoral head relative to the femoral shafts...I have been found to have extreme retroversion and have out toed my whole life. It should be said that the excessive external rotation is always accompanied by a reciprocal lack of internal rotation (aka negative anteversion) in the case of femoral retroversion. This has been a problem for me especially practicing yoga. The lack of internal rotation really limits me. If I end up needing hip replacements when I am older will that will correct the version in my hip joints and will that allow me to have normal internal and external rotation? I hope so because that will allow me to do all the yoga poses I have not been able to do due to this rotational deformity. Thanks for your videos. Hope to hear back.

I'd run like hell from hip replacements as they only last a decade or two. Better to get the bone corrected and stop the damage that deformed bones is doing to you. In a few years, there will be a few drugs on the market that can regenerate cartilage and replacement joints will no longer be a thing. But they seem to be very expensive so far.

Hello Maurizio, even my right leg is toed out. I too find difficulty in sitting cross-legged on the ground while doing yoga. My right knee area doesn't touch the ground when sitting cross-legged. Is it the same with you?

@@idildanacing I'm still having problems 4 years after a fall when I was 7 months pregnant. Been to PT 4 times and now researching on my own. I knew I had a problem before I was pregnant but it didn't hurt often, I seemed to walk fine... Now, it's like nothing will help, foot or hip, somethings gotta be hurting. I'd just like to be able to carry another pregnancy without falling again.

I bet the guy with the foot out 12 degrees has pretty major foot issues or will later on encounter them.

You know, I noticed that everyone seems to be having tibial torsion or retroverted hips on the same side. Someone linked it to driving and it's making more sense than the theory that it just grew to be like that Like the doctor says it runs on the men's side of his family... men who were the only ones driving cars daily back in the day

@@ebunny91 I can't believe I have an opinion on bunions but I think they're caused by tight shoes. Like I honestly walk better and without pain barefoot now. It's only when I put my big feet into shoes that my toe areas start to hurt. All shoes have a toe box that curves inwards and pushes the toes together. But spreading out the toes when barefoot spreads out the pressure on the joints Now I use shoes to walk but take them off when I can. I also widen my toe spacing when I get home or am in bed to counter the time spent in shoes during the day. Spreading my toes makes my feet appear more like duck's feet but the relief is real. You can Google "correct toes" to read someone more knowledgeable talk about it and read reviews by others who found relief etc All heels in shoes have been bad for my feet too. My feet can only tolerate flat shoes with no heel now. Basically the heel is adding pressure which goes forward to the toe joints Women's shoes are for sure the worst offender because of the narrow toe box and heels which = more pressure + pushing the toes together. Bottom line: spreading my toes + more time spent walking barefoot = no bunion formation and no more turf toe
