Detroit is a true blue 'model franchise' from Ilitch to Holland to Zetterberg, add that to multiple players ready and willing to take pay cuts just to keep the Motown magical mix together and you just know how committed they ALL are to something special! I revel in jealously sometimes at just how treated their city is night after night...like a great traditional recipe created from scratch, something you can try and copy over and over and over but NEVER quite get right! It's GREAT STUFF and it's an even GREATER story that's all their own September to June, start to finish!

What an unbelievable team. Hasek, Chelios, Lidstrom, Shanahan, Yzerman, Hull, Robitaille, Datsyuk. They were the stars but Federov, Holmstrom, Larionov, Draper, Duchesne and McCarthy were all as important. The fact they all deferred wages to make it happen only makes it better.

if this team were able to stay together another 5 years or so, we would have seen some back to back to back to backs. no team will ever come close to being this stacked. especially because of the salary cap. illitch spent an assload on this team
@hughjass8383
@hughjass8383 5 жыл бұрын
They did stay together; however they didn't resign Hasek. As far as "back to back to backs", this is the NHL (not the NBA where the same teams make the playoffs every year) competition in the NHL is more unpredictable where a stanley cup championship team can go AWOL and miss the playoffs two years later or fail to contend the next year.
@JHockeyFan

BUGZ Had they got better scoring in the playoffs in 03 and 04, they win another Cup easily. They ran into Giguerre and Kiprusoff who played their best ever. People forget that CuJo played great in those playoffs, just got out-dueled by two studs. 2006, year after the salary cap comes in, Legace just wasn’t a true number one starter and Osgood got hurt before he was to make a start in the playoffs. Roloson played very well for the Oilers in that round too.

Mike C I agree. How could something so right go SO wrong in that series? I guess Game 3 was THE turning point in that series. The Wings blew a 3-0 lead, and if it wasn't for a controversial goal by the Kings, they probably would not have forced OT, won the game, or won the series. I STILL believe that the 2nd goal the Kings scored in Game 4 to make it 3-2 was ridiculous!! You could plainly see that the puck never crossed the line past Chris Osgood's pads. That was a total BULLSHIT call by the officials. That STILL eats me up inside even today.

You put this team and every player in their prime against a prime Oilers team. Detroit would win 3-0. Why? Two time hart winner and only goaltender to do so, dominik hasek. Lets not forget he bested a stacked canadian team in the Olympics. In the most competitive games he finds a way to steal or win the game for his team. Ok not only do the wings have hasek, but stevie, hull, luc, lidstrom, datsyuk (4th line center) and etc. Im sorry but there is no way in heck no other team can close to beating this detroit team in their prime. All 4 lines have hall of fame players. Thats absolutely insane!!!!! I get Edmonton has Gretzky, Messier and etc. However, this detroit team was so much deeper and lidstrom could shut wayne down. Also you could have Jiri fisher throwing a huge hit on him as well or Shanny or the grind line. Its just insane to look at that line-up and realize this was once a reality.

Stacked MLB teams get taken down every season almost. The variance in performance from one year to the next and brutal highs and lows make Baseball a game where the best teams lose often. Relying on the consistency of a batted ball is much different than relying on a MJ or LBJ etc ability to dominate

Robitaille and Rob Blake probably screwed LA out of a championship . They had a decent team in 2001 and 2002

That is where the hate for Colorado developed. He was my favorite. 4 Loved that team. Felix the cat. Palffy. Norstrom.

I think fedorov should’ve won the conn smythe that year not lidstrom. Lidstrom has a better argument in 98.

@@sawyermalinowski1719 well if Yzerman won it in 02 you’d have to talk about him and lidstrom & or fedorov swapping trophies, fedorov should’ve won it in 97, 8 goals 4 game winners 2 of those game winners in the finals, 12 assists 20 points, he had 3 goals & 2 assists in the finals if I’m not mistaken.

Datsyuk was the only one left as of a few years ago, as this was his rookie season I believe. There's no one left now, and only a handful of guys left from the 2008 Cup team (iirc Franzen, Helm, Kronwall, Abdelkader, Zetterberg, Ericsson, and Howard?).
