Hey David im looking to get a volvo 240 wagon from 1985. Its in very good condition 187k miles. Anything i should look for specifically, i know the wiring can be bad on these but what else would you recommend. Also its this vs a Mercedes Benz 300D turbo diesel. So kinda torn.

Change or rebuild your gearbox from od box to standard m45. The planetary gear cannot handle the torque. The rebuild is easy, just replace the main shaft and backpart as well as the standard propshaft 1974 and up fits from all volvos. . As a regular m45 it can also handle oil for higer persur better, od gearbox don't like 80-90 gl5 that get to high oilpressure for the pump.

An M410 might be a better option if you don't need OD or 5th gear.

A heavier flywheel will be harder on the synchros, and likely a litle more cranky to shift without using clutch. Maybe it will add a percentage point to regen, in support of keeping it.
