I experiment with a molding compound made of gelatin and glycerin to see how well it would work as a silicone alternative for making dice. It is very affordable and works well with resin masters.
Molding Compound - Jenner Custom Toys: • How to make your own R...
4 ounces plain unflavored gelatin
12 ounces glycerin (1 1/4 cup)
1/2 cup cold water
1 1/2 cup HOT water

Another tip is to add some borax to make sure your mold material doesn't grow any... Mold lol. IIRC it's a few percent borax to your mix. It's not longer food safe after that and you gotta be careful with pets but it'll act like a good preservative.

do you have advuce on the ratios with the borax?? Because my previous sculpture (which was water+ beef gelatin + glycerine) went completely mold!

It's entirely possible that your choice in gelatin makes a difference in the ability to hold it's shape. Gelatin strength is measured on a scale of "bloom" which directly attributes to strength and transparency. Great Value brand doesn't have any available information on the actual gelatin source (pork? Beef?) Therefore a bloom scale is difficult to pin. Knox, which Jenner used in his video, has a bloom strength of 225, just below Platinum which is the highest available strength and clarity. Platinum starts at 230 and goes up to 300, which is likely not the best option for this application since we want some flexibility. I'm going to be attempting this with a platinum grade sheet gelatin and attempting a cap mold. Thanks for the video comparison!

To update: sheet gelatin is not great for this. Knox really is the way to go.

I think that to remove the bubbles you need to vacuum it and then bring it to room pressure before its solid. The pressure pot does exactly the oposite.
@oddjobbob8742
@oddjobbob8742 Жыл бұрын
After removing the original mold (in this case, a hard plastic die, return the gelatin mold to the container then add the resin. The container will give the gelatin some support so the void will not misshape. Also store the mold in the container with the lid on the container and a cast item filling the void, or cast an item and leave it in place. Your mold will last longer. Storing it in a refrigerator will help as well.

Not really, I haven't had that happen yet. If you can't easily cut the moldy parts out, its inexpensive enough to just make a new batch

I tried this, and works pretty nicely, except that I stored the gelatin mold in the fridge and after a few weeks started to turn back to a liquid. Anyone know what happened? Thanks

I think it's when the gelatin goes bad, so the bacteria digests it and breaks it down into a liquid

I honestly don't know, but I assume it helps make it a thicker substance that holds it shape and keeps in moisture so that it can last longer when being melted and cooled repeatedly

Question 1. Can this mold be used to make concrete stuff? Eg. Concrete dice Question 2. Can you add cornstarch or cement dust to your current mixture increase the stiffness of the molds so it won't be that squishy???

For a stronger mold, DON'T use so much water!! The less water, the stronger your mold. Your mold will be as strong as any silicon mold..and then you'll be able to create CONCRETE items!

The gelatin/glycerin melts at much lower temperatures than any metals would, so no, it would burn right through it.

Depends on the size of the mold, however long it takes to cool down. You can put it in the fridge to cool it faster.

@@geek-happens I was actualy thinking about using it for some life casting experiments so the fridge part gets a bit harder 😄 Do you think there is any way i could make this work? Thank you!
@geek-happens
@geek-happens Жыл бұрын
@@AS0144 Ah, that would be more difficult and I don't think it would work very well. It has to be quite hot to stay in liquid form and could burn or be very uncomfortable on skin while you wait for it to cool. I haven't tried it, but for life casting, you may want to try Smooth-On's Body Double silicones, they have some fast curing ones that only take about 7 minutes
@urbangirlresin
@urbangirlresin Жыл бұрын
@@AS0144 I think it's possible to get a life cast as I've made gelatin face masks before but you would probably have to do many many layers because it's not very stable when removing. 😂 I think silicone would be much cheaper and more stable option but I would love to see it tested out.

Should be able to a little bit as long as its cool water. Otherwise, you may try just heating it up back into liquid form and run it through a filter

I've read that white resins heat a lot more than clear. I suspect a slow-cure clear would be your best choice to use with gelatin molds.

@geek-happens Жыл бұрын
You'll want to use a resin that doesn't heat up as much if possible. You may also try putting it in the freezer and see if that helps
@meh_lady
@meh_lady Жыл бұрын
Try a deep pour resin, they produce way less heat. It will also produce fewer bubbles for making a clean master. Deep pour has a longer cure time but would be worth the wait.

Your gelatin mold is getting smaller and lose shape do to water evaporating from it. Not totally sure about this but i imagine if you start out with no water then nothing should evaporate? Seems like not all recipes call for water.

Hi Geek! I have a way better recipe that I want to share with you!! Mine doesn't use water... has NO bubbles...and it's also REUSABLE!! Use equal amounts of gelatin & glycerin. Here's the recipe..(you're welcome! 😌)... - 100 grams gelatin. - 100 grams glycerin - A little cornstarch. - oil to grease the items you want to duplicate. - Heatproof gloves PROCEDURE: 1- pour glycerin & gelatin in a microwaveable container. 2- mix well and until you don't see any dry gelatine. 3- microwave mixture in intervals of 5 to 10 seconds at a time..(aprox). With a metal spatula, mix it well after each interval. 4- when you see it's all melted, that's when it's ready. It becomes like a very thick, gooey paste..like a soft dough. 5- Put some oil on your hands, so you'll be able to handle the "gelatin dough".. and also, if you think you need to...sprinkle some cornstarch on the top of the amount of dough you think you'll need (this is only to make it easier to grab it, because dough is sticky)..and with heatproof gloves grab the amount you want and place your item in it.. set aside and let it cool down completely.. (BTW, I don't use gloves, but I'm careful the dough is not too hot so I can handle it). 6- This gelatin "dough" is liquid enough that you CAN POUR it too just like you did in your video!!!.. The hotter this "goop" is, the more liquidy it is obviously. So, let's say you want to make a mold of your hammer.. all you do is double or triple the recipe.. Oil the entire hammer and place it in a container that fits.. Line the container with parchment paper, place the hammer and pour the gelatin mixture on it until its all covered... let it cool off/harden. Geek... your molds will be VERY FLEXIBLE, much stronger and BUBBLE FREE!!😊 To reuse it, place it in the microwave again.. until it melts..and... voila! I hope this recipe helps you and your subscribers! I also hope you try it and let me know if it worked for you!
